@@TheRescueSwimmer Hi Jeff, I was a surface rescue swimmer on board the now ex-USS Anchorage LSD-36. We did a lot of pt, swimming, and class work but not as intense as these lads. We had the jet fins, masks and often times swam in our dungarees. We would also swim with our clothes in our hands for extra endurance. We didn't do the under water swimming or pt on the edges of the pool. Also we didn't do any open water work it was all in the pool.I think we had it easy in the 80's.I think the Navy standards are higher today than then. Anchors Aweigh!

Tall skinny, short skinny, tall husky short husky is what I see and they all do great. Just get into the pool and take lessons. Contact a recruiter and see if you can go take a practice PST with some instructors, that way they can tell you what you need to work on. Once your confident in your abilities, sign the contract, pass your initial PST, keep your abilities going and don’t stop practicing. push yourself as hard as you can every time that way you get better every time. If you simply do what you do every time, you won’t get any better, you’ll just maintain the abilities you’re currently at. Basically just do a PST in a local pool daily that way you kill it when you get in. Don’t do the minimums, do the maximums.

There’s not so much competitive scores for this because well, it’s just not competitive like seal or swcc. Yes you should always push past the minimum but if you can only get the minimum‘s, then you’ll still get accepted you just have to pass them. Now you should still get in the best shape possible and get used to swimming with a lot of drag and weight on your body. This shit is fucking hard. Do rescue swimmers go into combat like in Iraq?

That’s an awesome question. Unfortunately there isn’t a simple answer to that. If you’re an aviation. Rescue swimmer then yes you can. For example HSC squadrons were deployed in Iraq. For surface rescue swimmer it’s possible that they while not fulfilling their role as a surface swimmer, they could get orders to work with ground units in those areas. So the answer is yes and no, just depends. Are you looking into joining possibly?
