This is a clip taken from our Patreon Friday podcast. If you are thinking about buying a Garmin 8 - Don't watch this 😂 Watch this instead: th-cam.com/video/M8kR2A_3n0A/w-d-xo.html
Yep me too! Works great. Id only ever upgrade for better battery life so that i dont need to charge on multi day hiking trips. Otherwise, the 5 is fantastic
DCrainmaker actually wrote that if friends ask him whether to buy the 8, he says "if you don't scuba dive and don't need the mic, get a 7 Pro/Epix Pro". By the way, the 7 Pro and Epix Pro will get way cheaper in a few weeks, maybe months, probably in the 500-700 price range (brand new). If you like MIP screens, just get the Enduro, it's the best value for money in this new line.
Looking forward to a Mark Lewis video in a few months “Why I weakened and got a Fenix 8”. 😂 All the points you make in this video are valid, but you know you won’t be able to resist.
This is one of the best product reviews I’ve ever seen. I’m not even that interested in smartwatches but the way they get to the point and the dry chemistry between these two makes for an excellent video.
I just upgraded from the Fenix6 to 8 AMOLED and just too happy about the purchase. The screen and layout does make a massive difference. Also dive (scuba) on a very consistent basis. Very pleased thus far
Still feeling the same after a month? I’m considering exactly the same upgrade. The Fenix 6 still does the job, so the main justification for the 8 is that it can replace my old fashioned regular maintenance required dive watch. Just in doubt whether to stick with MIP or go for Amoled.
I’ve got a Fenix 6 pro and I’m pleased to see I’m missing nothing new. It silently and unobtrusively carries on doing exactly what I need it to faultlessly. It works so well that I’m hardly aware I’m using it which is probably the best compliment you can give for this type of device.
I know it’s tough, but more videos like this please. You are delightful to listen to, I agree 100%. I’ve got the Fenix 7x sapphire solar and wanted a fancy display so I got the forerunner 965 nearly identical.
Totally on point. Got the epix 2 pro about a year ago and was curious about the Fenix 8 when I saw that DC Rainmaker uploaded his video. Half way through I thought - this is literally the same thing as the Epix 2 , just a bit more makeup. No relevant changes imho and no way I am spending 1300 euros on that. Haha 😅
Great video as always. I’m a scuba diver and I have a Garmin mark 2. This is a great watch that I also use for the gym. The mark 2 has air integration as well. Thanks guys
The killer feature on the fenix 5X was maps. The killer feature on the fenix 6X was a 1.4” display - which was much more read able. Also the power manager. The killer feature of the fenix 7X was much more accurate GPS and the SatIQ feature that intelligently switches modes between bands to optimize accuracy and power. And also the torch. Both quite cool. The Epix 2 Pro brought together a 51mm case and a new generation HR sensor. The Fenix 8 51mm has an even more ruggedized case and buttons brought over from the Descent. This is not nothing as I have had the button gasket on a fenix fail resulting in a suddenly dead watch with sweat inside. That’s great but not worth accelerating your purchase of the next model. If you have an Epix 2 Pro 51mm it’s probably silly to upgrade to a fenix 8 51mm.
Jenna is a world champion listener! She also made the whole point without any word salad…..pointed to her Fenix 7 and smiled. Bravo! (Of course she leveraged off Mark’s commentary) My Fenix 6 Pro 47mm is still fine. I’d go for a Fenix 8 except for: the price is crazy, who needs a speaker and text messaging when your phone is there, I don’t scuba dive or golf. I’d like to have the software upgrades, improved resolution, the torch, and improved GPS, the Orange band and casing…….but not at the price. Garmin is over reaching…..we don’t want phone functions, etc on our wrist.
I have a Fenix 6X Pro Solar since November 2020, and I love it. I wear it everyday, it is there with me on every workout I do, hike, strength training, bike, running.. If I had to buy another Garmin watch, it would be the Enduro 3. It is the best bang for the buck, right now. I do not care for scuba dive activity or the voice assistant.
Spot on with the Fenix 6! I don't want a touch screen watch when running in the pouring rain. I love my Fenix 6S. It's just the right size for wearing it day and night as my regular watch, and does everything I need as a sports watch - from walking the dog, adventure hikes, trail running, to cycling, and open water swimming. It does the job it's meant to do! As long as Garmin keeps supporting the Fenix 6 firmware upgrades I don't see the point in upgrading.
If you're in Australia, wait for JB-Hi-Fi to sell the last gen top-of-the-line watches for cheap. Full warranty compared to second hand and good value.
Brilliant! made me chuckle a few times. I've just returned from UTMB "Chamonix" and the amount of conversations I've had about the Fenix 8 is unmeasurable. Wish I had this video to hand -Top job👌
Let's also say that most women or other small wristed people that want a MIP are ignored in this release. So to me this is a downgrade, as I got the Fenix 6s Sapphire because I wanted a watch that looks kinda nice that I can easily use on a hike on a bright day and has decent battery life.
The point of the Fenix 8 and it's improvements are to stay competitive in the smart watch arena and possible sway people away from the Apple watches. My only gripe, is at this price, it should have LTE.
To be fair, they have lower level models and they function amazingly well. They can charge their premium model whatever they want, as long as they don't get rid of the different levels going up to Fenix and those function well.
This watch isn't targeted at the casuals. They target people taking their sport extremely seriously and willing to pony up the cash for the top tier model. A 265, or any other mid model is more than enough for most of us.
$1200 is nothing compared to the money you would spend on the epic trips you would go to to actually use its features. You can get a Forerunner 955 for around $400 and 99% of people will never need more than that.
This was the best review of the 8th series. Fully agreed. And as other comments say, for the MIP lovers (that's me, too) the Enduro 3 is the thing. Cheaper, no stupid mic, with beyond great battery life. Thanks for a very direct discussion :)
Mark, I like how you want to challenge yourself. After watching this, you could do a podcast where Jen picks her subject, and you have to listen while she speaks about whatever interests her. Time the conversation to calculate a talk/listening ratio for both. I know I would fail; it must be a guy thing, but you are the one if anyone can successfully do it. Jen, you deserve a medal for this one.
I upgraded from a Fenix 7 Solar Sapphire to a 51mm Epix Gen 2 Sapphire when it was available for £525 recently. Love the screen. I knew the 8 was on the horizon, but I'm glad there are no revolutionary changes that make me wish I'd waited for the 8.
I think one use case for the voice interaction feature is when you are skiing and want to e.g. talk to your family. I’m on the verge of buying a Garmin 8 and this was actually one of the very specific situations where I was thinking OK so where do I use my Apple Watch and where would I not be able to replace it? This is it. For me, the Garmin 8 now beats the Apple Watch in all my use cases.
I just bought the Fenix 7 (new) 3 weeks ago for 370 from amazon. The previous model prices have dropped through the floor now the 8 is out and I'm extremely happy with it. I think the point you made about incremental improvements is valid, but the prices have a huge difference now.
You are 100% right! I have a Fenix 6, training for marathons and I bought it second hand 2 years ago for 250 Euro. I don't think there's any point in upgrading anytime soon.
I really like the option to have a microphone to text with, I’ve missed that since my Apple Watch days. And, as a scuba diver (we are legion!) I would like to track my exertion against my big fancy dive computer that I will definitely be using over what the Garmin tells me. Lastly, my Fenix 6sPro is starting to wear down, so when I go to replace it I’ll get the 8. But that being said I’m in no rush.
Im a Scuba Diver, use the garmin for REC dives and as backup computer for TEC dives. The primary computer i use is the Shearwater perdix, big nice screen
Wasn't she in IT? Maybe she never worked for the investment banks on Canary Wharf like I did. Many of the traders had 5 grand plus Rolexes, Breitlings etc. and some of the IT contractors did too (think it helps to look prosperous and charge more). And that was 20 years ago!
Mark ur hilarious, ur wife is great and you are my go to guy for anything fitness even though I’ve only found your channel recently. Keep up the great work.
Whatsi more interesting is the Garmin Enduro 3 is basically a better watch for less money. Also, the Garmin Fenix 7X Solar is currently on discount in Curry's for £429, you'd be utterly insane to get a Fenix 8 at the moment
I wish I could get my wife to listen to me drone about the finer points of differences between today's watches like this. I would feel so heard and understood.
I loved your review of the Garmin 7X. Then I bought a 6X Sapphire and have been happy with it. A solid watch and does everything I need it to do. The only reason I would want a touchscreen, would be for navigating maps. Knocked this one out of the park! Everyone is pushing all these new products, when they are really no better then the one it is replacing, then you got the influencers saying you need it. Thanks for telling us we don’t need it! That is awesome 👏
I love Jenna. Mark this video format is so good. Still love my Ultra 2 and sold my Tactix 7 to get it. Fed up with boring Garmin not doing much over the years just creating lots of watches with different numbers and names just like Sony did with Walkman, but commanding the price tag too with it. The new Fenix 8 reminds me of the Coros. My first fitness watch was a Suunto (no one talks about them much now). Thank you again for this.
@Marklewisfitness you mis the best argument. The Fenix 8, combines the best things of the Forerunner 965 and the Epix. The Small Bezel/big screen of the 965 with saphire glass and led light of the Epix Pro.
Got a Fenix 6 X Pro- still don’t want to upgrade. Got an iPhone 11 Pro Max and I think I need to upgrade now for the 5G and WiFi 6 as I’ll be living off grid from next week! Love your videos like this you both have a dry humour
As another grumpy 5x year old, I completely agree. You can see when companies run out of ideas when they start adding extensions such as 'Pro' 'Max' '2' 'Turbo' etc. Time for Garmin to make some big feature changes. Anything short of an Ironman thruster is not trying hard enough.
I could have done this clip in 4 seconds: "It's the best watch if you haven't got any watch.", but I don't have a hot Jen to appear in it. So this is the best video ever.
hi mark and Jenna. I just bought a fenix 7 for £350 from John Lewis. sold my old fenix 6pro on ebay for £200. total upgrade cost £150!!! feels like a decent deal to me as I've now got a watch with a few upgrades and 2yrs warrantee.
And you shouldn't. The Enduro2 has had it all for well over a year. The past, the present and the future - the Enduro2 is everything you'll ever need. Anything else is iPhone 34 type marketing shite.. 😊
I've had the original Enduro for over 2 years now (I think) and it does everything I want from my watch, as well as having incredible battery life. It cost me £440 new, and personally I've no reason to spend more.
@@willnickell2312 No maps was the main issue with the Enduro. Other than that, a solid piece. I'm considering the Enduro 3. I don't need the voice function of the Fenix 8.
I think Mark is right; the only reason to get an 8 is because it's the latest model. If my watch were to stop functioning now, then I'd probably replace it with an Enduro 3 even though it has more features than I need.
Absolutely agree about iPhone. Literally the only reason I trade my iPhone is to not have a degraded battery and to get the best trade in. Functional, it makes zero difference.
I was considering the fenix 7s since I have a small wrist but they are still going for a high price and I'm in latin America where everything is even more expensive brought down here, so I bought the coros apex 2 pro, used it today for my first run and loved it, don't know what I may be missing from the fenix though, hope I don't regret it long term since I'm hoping this can be my watch for many years to come, loving the channel Mark, started trail running a few months ago and really hyped on it and youtube channels like yours!
My 18 month old Enduro 2 is staying firmly on my wrist. The really effective upgrades with the 3 are a slightly higher contrast screen, slightly longer battery life, and upgraded HR sensor... of the 3 I wear a chest strap when I want really accurate HR, and that's already better than the newer HR sensor in the Fenix 8/Enduro 3. If for some reason I were to break this Enduro 2 I'd go for a 3 but otherwise we'll wait until there's actually a good reason to replace it.
Just finished watching DC Rainmaker full review on Fenix 8, yours popped up next. Your rant is brilliant in it's own right! Absolutely agree on microphone been useless. But I'm the one who need and will use diving and freediving functions :)
I completely agree with everything you said, and quite honestly I'm sort of relieved that the Fenix 8 is barely an upgrade from my 7x so now I truthfully don't even want it. Very happy I have the 7x with the flashlight that I use religiously. Some actual upgrades I'd want to see is a better music player app, more storage, better Bluetooth connectivity to earbuds all of which they never even talked about with the 8 I think? Otherwise, 🤷♂️
I installed the Fenix 8 watch face on my Epix from Garmin IQ, purchased a Garmin Fenix red watch band off Amazon and viola, a refreshed watch that’ll last me until the next cycle. I’ll put the savings in my pension as advised. 😂
Literally bought the 6 on your review a month ago for £400 but probably could have got a discount for even more if I'd realised the 8 was coming out. Very happy with my choice. Previously had the wahoo rival with auto triathlon mode but it packed in an got confused when I ended up walking up a hill on the bike so told me I was on the run leg
"and my point is it doesn't need to be the best camera in the world" Of course not, but smartphone camera is often the best camera you have because it is always with you, so, it is "the best camera in the world" in an everyday situation. And I agree completely with your opinion about Fenix 8. It will be a great new watch for those who can afford it, but there are no sensible reasons for "upgrading" from Fenix 7 or Epix 2, since all the "updates" are just incremental one, and all the "news" are not essential for majority of potential buyers. And you, mentioning, and remembering Amstrad, that's a real bonus...
Totally agree with you. I decided to upgrade my current Fenix 6 pro to 7 pro. I was hoping Fenix 8 would bring more innovations, and after the release 7 pro is clearly good enough for half the price. And I still get the latest HR sensor, health, and recovery features I fish to have.
If you dive and you have this kind of money and you want a garmin, you’re getting a descent mk3i. Slightly more expensive but actually has the features you need (and goes deep enough).
Wouldn’t the fenix 8 cover 99% of the recreational divers? I can see the added value of the Descent for technical divers or dive instructors, but as a recreational diver with years of experience I have never passed the 35 meters. So I wonder if the descent is worth it over the Fenix in my case.
People can get really obsessed with their sport watches (if you don't track it it never happened)... and ending up using 5% of the functions... I am curious how successful the Fenix8 will be with that price tag.
Garmin choice is a solid predictor of racing ability in my national 40+ age group scene. Some key learnings being - a) $1000 Garmin wearers can’t hold my wheel. 2) The guy telling me about his $1000 Garmin pre-race walks through aid stations on the half-marathon. c) Old model Forerunner wearers can probably break 10 hours on the Ironman. 7) $1000 Garmin wearers forget to hit the button when leaving transition - the yelp of agony can usually be heard after the first kilometre when they first look to check their pace and realise their precious stats are ruined. I wear a Forerunner 955 BTW….
my biggest downside to my epix is that I have to remember to start the activity. Where the AWU starts it automatically or at least ask me if I'm doing an activity. Still like my Garmin better.
2 หลายเดือนก่อน
Fenix 7 got auto-transition in last beta ;))) Also, should you be running through aid stations if you're not fighting for prizes?
I have the Epix Pro 2 and just picked up the Fenix 8. I like the look and the screen is noticeably bigger but very disappointed in the available watch faces and the sound quality of the speaker. I'm going to work with it for a week or so but as of today, I will probably return it.
I have a very bad habit of always getting the latest of everything.... costly and stupid trait.... This time with both the Edge 1050 and Fenix 8 - I 100% agree with you, I can't see the feature set improvement as I could in the past. That combined with the creeping high end price points, I won't be making the upgrade for either for the first time in many generations of the premium Edge and Fenix.

Jen's face 🤣 reminds me of some of those team meetings I've been sat in , just nod and smile
OMG these 16:01 minutes were so satisfying!
The two people I was waiting on their review, you and DC rainmaker!! I’m gonna keep to the epix..keep up the good content..much appreciated 👍👍
Iwc on Fridays 😂
Superb! 👍
Im a Scuba Diver, use the garmin for REC dives and as backup computer for TEC dives. The primary computer i use is the Shearwater perdix, big nice screen
Now if it lets me use voice commands while I'm scuba diving, I'm sold!
Mark, I'm right there with you. I have a 2 gen old Epix and see no reason to update.
3:50 Jenna: Over a grand? FOR A WATCH?
Meanwhile Mark wearing an IWC, I bet the doesn't know the price of.
She has bought me watches worth more than my top gun 😂. She means “just a watch” - as opposed to art on the wrist 😂
Wasn't she in IT? Maybe she never worked for the investment banks on Canary Wharf like I did. Many of the traders had 5 grand plus Rolexes, Breitlings etc. and some of the IT contractors did too (think it helps to look prosperous and charge more). And that was 20 years ago!
she has a datejust....she knows her watches (she just doesn't regard fancy watches the same as sports ones)
@@MarkLewisfitnesslove it
I really like this form of video, watching the podcast. Feels cozy.
Mark ur hilarious, ur wife is great and you are my go to guy for anything fitness even though I’ve only found your channel recently. Keep up the great work.
“Traditionally attached to you”. Amazing!!!
As someone who got a used fenix 6 pro a few days ago, this review is exactly what I wanted to hear!
I love your Quote : If you can't affort 1000 euro; your also can't affort 850 euro. That's as true as a cow.
I have the 965. The enduro 3 looks like the best option but I’ll probably just hold on to mine for now
my head turned when you said it has a dive computer. That might sell me on the 8. hmmm
Only works for recreational diving though. They've held it back to not compete with the Descent.
I’m rocking the Garmin 245 and I have no need to upgrade to anything different.
Same, but the battery is starting to die on me.
Same, love that small watch that can almost do it all (or just what I need)
Thank you again for this.
nice video, love the audio quality, sounds so good on headphones
Her frown lines and controlled patience speak volumes 😂😂
@Marklewisfitness you mis the best argument. The Fenix 8, combines the best things of the Forerunner 965 and the Epix. The Small Bezel/big screen of the 965 with saphire glass and led light of the Epix Pro.
If they added LTE to that microphone and speaker I'd buy it just for that upgrade.
Got a Fenix 6 X Pro- still don’t want to upgrade. Got an iPhone 11 Pro Max and I think I need to upgrade now for the 5G and WiFi 6 as I’ll be living off grid from next week! Love your videos like this you both have a dry humour
Love your videos. Honest opinions and thought. Brilliant.
Loved the very end. I had a good chuckle.
I am tired of Garmin. I bought Sansung Watch Ultra and I am loving it. Just amazing for my taste.
hi mark and Jenna. I just bought a fenix 7 for £350 from John Lewis. sold my old fenix 6pro on ebay for £200. total upgrade cost £150!!! feels like a decent deal to me as I've now got a watch with a few upgrades and 2yrs warrantee.
This has been enjoyable as I’m on the exercise bike 😂
And you shouldn't. The Enduro2 has had it all for well over a year. The past, the present and the future - the Enduro2 is everything you'll ever need. Anything else is iPhone 34 type marketing shite.. 😊
I have an Enduro2...I agree
I'm still using a forerunner 935 😂 llove it. I will be changing to the enduro 3 around October though ❤
I’ve just been chilling with a 5. Now its worth upgrading cause I don’t need a dedicated scuba watch anymore.
Absolutely agree about iPhone. Literally the only reason I trade my iPhone is to not have a degraded battery and to get the best trade in. Functional, it makes zero difference.
Love Jen’s reaction “For a watch?!”
Guess she has no idea how much Mark's IWC Topgun watch costs (he mentions it early in the video) 😂
@@rossoleary9506 she knows my watch collection is not “just watches” 😂
I found you and this channel a few years ago because I was looking for a Garmin watch!!!
I'll stick to my fenix 7x pro and wait for fenix 9. 🤣 Fenix 8 seemed like transitory phase. Shall wait it out.
I baught epix pro 47mm other week brand new 650 quid with big box, two straps (one leather).
World class.
It's a mega watch ❤
Love it when she says "over a grand' like it's loads of money when there is 8k sat on the wrist across from her 😂
"and my point is it doesn't need to be the best camera in the world"
Of course not, but smartphone camera is often the best camera you have because it is always with you, so, it is "the best camera in the world" in an everyday situation.
My sentiments entirely. No reason to upgrade my 7 Sapphire Solar for years
Totally agree with you.
5% on a good day 😂
Garmin choice is a solid predictor of racing ability in my national 40+ age group scene. Some key learnings being -
a) $1000 Garmin wearers can’t hold my wheel.
Fenix 7 got auto-transition in last beta ;)))
Also, should you be running through aid stations if you're not fighting for prizes?
Very true and very sensible. I really meant “HAS to walk….” 😂
People ask you because you are a cool guy whose videos I truly like!
So mark, are you upgrading or not? Not quite clear 😂. I think this is your funniest video yet. Keep up the good work.
I was thinking the same thing. I'll stick with my Epix Gen 2 Pro 51mm
@@AntonChigurh989 join the club 😂
