  • Here's the rare TONY JACKSON GROUP treat I mentioned in another thread. Here's Tony with his new group during February 1966 performing live during a BBC radio session. The songs were released on a very limited BBC Transcription Service disc.
Three songs plus a short interview with Brian Matthew.
"Almost There" was also recorded by The Turtles (B-Side of "It Ain't Me Babe)
"You're My Number One" (released as a single February 1966)
"Never Leave Your Baby's Side" (released as a single April 1966)

Denis, so cool to know that you're on YT, Tony Jackson Group was and will always be brilliant! Being from Norway, I couldn't help but hear that Tony mentioned that the band had played in my country - do you have any recollections of it, and where in Norway did you perform? Would love to know, although it's a bit late to see you guys now... ;)

Terrific stuff. The band always had great feel and chose fantastic songs. This is a great addition to my LP and CD of the band's collected work. Big thanks especially to Denis Thomson. RIP Tony. Anyone else interested in this band should read Drumming Up Vivrations by Paul Francis..

NO The guys in Tony's band could sing, I became their bass player when Tony stopped playing bass. Ian, Paul and myself all sang.

I wonder if Tony sang his own backups on these songs, or if he had guys that sang as well as he did? The vocals are really good. Amazing that The Searchers didn't think there was room enough in one band for two great lead singers. Just mind blowing.

Tonetwisters: Chris Curtis' ego is to blame for Tony's departure from The Searchers. Curtis declared himself "group leader" and told Tony he didn't want him singing lead anymore. This after Tony had sung lead on a couple of Number 1's! Outrageous. The group should have ousted Curtis instead. If anyone was replaceable it was Curtis.
