Really funny synchronicity, im in the process of rescuing a chaos space marine army. A lot of the models i got were incredibly rough and glued together by a young hobbyist throwing whatever they could together. Still i love the passion they clearly had for the hobby and its been a ton of fun fixing them all up.
haha, perfect timing :) I do love to see these projects that were done by younger hobbyists, it always brings me back to that feeling of first starting again, and I can't believe how much work was put into some of these, I was barely capable of not spilling paint when I was younger, much less attempting things like converting and freehand. pretty neat to see a visible history.
Well thanks Bro, now I have a new printer to add to the list. Built in heater is a game changer plus that's basically the same build plate as the Saturn's. Great job on this week's models bud
It's a good one man! The heater definitely makes a difference. Prints have been coming out really nice even with the temps being all over the place outside.

Good video, the old Khorne Bezerkers have some fantastic elements that hold up even to this day. If you like oldhammer goodness the weapons are the absolute PINNACLE of the aesthetic but even if you don't the backpacks and legs or more specifically the running legs, still hold up to this day. Best of all the arms are actually Really nicely posed at the shoulder so if you chop off the big meat fists you can use the arms on any CSM conversion and get some brilliant poses safe in the knowledge you can hide them with pads and other accessories.
Thanks! I use a concentrated degreaser called LA's Totally Awesome. It's pretty great with or without the sonic cleaner, and pretty inexpensive depending on where you live.
I love the one that looks like Stewart from SNL Skit with the leg. "look what I can do" *proceeds to spill the blood for the Blood God! Claiming skulls for the Skull Throne!!!*
I always wanted to try this and convert AOS to 40k they look amazing I always thought of them as corrupted scouts since they have boots and lighter armor
Awesome stuff, this is exactly the sort of thing you were made for. Taking somebody's old passion project and bringing it back to life so it can ride again. Love it! I randomly had a question while watching this; how often do you change the degreaser in your sonic cleaner? You've got a rather large vat on that thing and I can't imagine it's economical to empty and refill it every time you clean some minis.
These kinds of projects are often my favorite for sure, it's so awesome to see how creative people are :) Interestingly, the degreaser I use is pretty cheap. I use LA's Totally Awesome, and besides being a pretty alright cleaner on its own, it's only $1 a bottle in the US, so cost isn't really the issue. I tend to clean it out after 2 or 3 projects. It seems to lose its stripping power the more times it gets used. So that's probably once a month for me and I use somewhere around 3 bottles to do that. It doesn't get filled up all the way every time, just enough to cover the minis.
This reminds me that I have a similar project of old broken berserkers and 3d printed parts still unfinished from a few years ago.. heh I think gw already came out with new berserkers for 40k
It's always a battle, take more time to paint, or write, or edit, or whatever it is. Some weeks are better than others, but I do what I can with the time I have. I'm always trying to improve of course and painting quality in a shorter time period is something that is always on my mind! I appreciate the feedback though, it definitely helps to know where things could be improved :)

It's pretty neat. I can tell the heater makes a difference too. It's been all over the place temperature-wise where I live and normally that means random failures, but the printer has been super consistent, definitely a massive feature if you print in a garage!
My biggest issue with the blood warrior->khorne berzerker conversion is the leather boots. been trying to find ways to fix that but nothing good yet...
In general, I would stay away from "special effect" paint from any non-hobby company. It's super hit or miss as to how well it will work for you. Most of the time the coverage is just not good enough to give you the look you want and still be thin enough to go down on a model. If you want a glow-in-the-dark look I very much recommend getting some fluorescent paint and going down that route, similar effect under a black light and it's usable paint. Prismatic Metal Color, I am not sure what that is exactly. If you mean the Prismatic paint line from Vallejo then you're more than fine, but if you mean some kind of folk art line then it's probably best to stay away. Non-model-specific metallics tend to have larger mica flakes in them and look bad at a smaller scale. Hope that answers your questions :)
Great work as always! Any chance you could point me in the right direction for the bits you printed out? I was wanting to do something similar with some chaos models that have been in my pile of shame for a few years, that could get a new lease on life from some kitbashing.

Also when I have been trying to strip things with 99% isopropyl alcohol, I get alot of base coats and really stubborn paint bits. Do you have any recommendation on getting those off? Honestly a tutorial for getting stubborn paint off minis for users might be a useful and well watched video.
For sure! I put a concentrated degreaser in the sonic cleaner, specifically LA's Totally Awesome, but any concentrated degreaser works pretty well. For me that tends to get the paint off without any issues, but for tougher minis a soak in 99% Iso and then a sonic bath helps a lot. I don't run into it very often, but when I do I will soak a model overnight and then throw it in the sonic cleaner, the iso softens the paint and that lets the machine do the rest. There are other actual paint strippers that work too, if you're having a tough time getting everything off, AK Interactive and Testors for example, but they are quite a bit more expensive than household cleaners. I've always had the plan to make a video specifically about it, I just haven't gotten around to it. Sooner or later, it will happen! I hope that helps in the meantime :)
I gotta ask, were you going for rule of cool over the unit set up? Berzerkers were equipped with a chain sword and bolt pistol and you are fitting bolters. Now bolters are force appropriate, but you just took away the capacity of the Berzerkers to shoot while in melee and any benefit they had for two single handed weapons. Not to mention that Berzerkers normal fit out is bolt pistol and chain sword. Not sure they are allowed bolters.
The Purple stuff works alright, but in any sonic cleaner, it will work even better, and sooo much faster. That's the real trade with the sonic cleaner anyways. You can strip models in minutes instead of letting them soak for days. It cuts through the paint and just makes it easier to do lots of models. Getting a metal body industrial looking one off of Amazon is a good way to go. They are all basically the same, so pick one that has mostly positive reviews and is in your budget. I have a 2 Liter version that has been working great for the last couple of years, before that I went through a couple of the cheaper plastic ones, and they were much smaller. I'm not so sure about the mars red dust you added to them. Tbh, would have looked better drenched in blood to match their lore rather than covered in dirt. Still a massive improvement from how they arrived.
So obviously it wouldn't match the existing demon army color scheme but could you have highlighted by mixing in florescent red paints or inks into your midtone red to make them brighter while avoiding the dreaded oranges and or pinks of red armies, or would that have either not worked or just looked like trash?
Yeah, you can get a brighter and more saturated red with inks over lighter colors. If you want to avoid the pink or orange highlights then creating a larger separation in the gradient from dark to light also helps tremendously. So you could go black to dark red, and then use a red ink on the top highlights. It's a lot like highlighting white. As long as you paint with gray then it looks white and then you put white highlights on that actually stand out. It would look good without going pink or orange for sure, it's just about how much of each color you have. Fluorescent would probably work, but it looks fluorescent, so it would be a choice like any other.
The new printer looks great, and the glowing review helps, and I'm in the market for a new printer but WOW expensive. Maybe after next year's tax refund.
I feel ya, it's not the cheapest printer out there.
