Lore tip: Most Space Wolves don't have yellow shoulderpads. The yellow field with the black wolf head is the mark of Ragnar Blackmane's Great Company, it just become GW's studio standard over the years. Hey oh, I got 2 tips that will help you in the future: 1) yellow is much better to brush on a pink base coat, I can't tell how much this is a game changer, it works with airbrush to but only with classic paint I don't if it works with contrast. 2)when painting pack marking I've now switched to drawing them first with a fine tip mechanical pencil, it draws well enough over most paints, it doesn't really scratches the paint and it can be easily be removed with an eraser, man did this help me draw good pack markings
They look great. I've thought for quite a while now that GW leaned a bit too far into the wolf theme and no where near enough into the Viking theme for Space Wolves, so with the primaris being less detailed, allowing for conversion like this, isn't necessarily a bad thing.

That's one of the best parts of the hobby; you can paint your models however you like! I once saw a space marine army that was painted in the colors of the Cincinnati Bengals!
@@thehammerofwrath That would be cool to see. I loved painting my minis when I played D&D. But that was years ago when I still had all my friends nearby. We all got married and moved away with jobs after college. I need to find a new group.
I have to second what was said before, the first video I've seen on your channel and it's great! Super easy to follow and the effect is great. Thank's for that!
Love the video and really like the end result for your Space Wolves. The color mix is something I will be using! :D I'm a fellow Japan resident (and Lead Belcher enthusiast). Maybe see you at a game in one of the shops (Akihabara / Jimbocho) and see your wolfy bois in action! The WH community here is really nice.
Awesome conversions and painting! My only issue is the brown base on the Invictor shield; black would've been more contrast, called to the red and black markings of the rest of the patrol and harkened back to the colour Grey Hunters and Wolf Guard share ^^
Those are some really nice kitbashes, that combat patrol is weird it does say space wolves but its very clear they just wanted to sell multiple generic marine combat patrols. I personally really like the Invictor Warsuit its ridiculous but thats what makes it fun, the old boxnaught is what really sparked my interest in 40K when I was a kid and it's incredibly silly looking from a practical standpoint.
Brother...this was a great video...I'm really impressed...seriously...Now I'm about to piss a bunch of people off...You didn't say the word "POP" once!!! BRAVO!!! Mini's don't "pop" unless you put a firecracker under them..I have talked to a lot of artists and art majors in school and they don't say "pop"...I hate it🤮🤮🤮you didn't say it and I'm soooo glad...thank you!!! (Okay, now the rest of the community can flame me...but, don't care, just my opinion...) As for the warsuit...I felt the same way you did, I thought it was silly and stupid...but one day I thought, well, it's a way of making a marine more mobile and able to carry a bigger gun/more weapons so not really that opposed to it anymore... Again, you did a great job brother...keep it up...can't wait for the next one...
:) If you think "pop" is bad, go back and count how many times I say "Absolutely incredible" in my videos! LoL. A friend pointed that out, and now I'm constantly checking myself while recording.
@thehammerofwrath you make great videos brother...hoping to see a Mechanicus and Drukhari combat patrol...as well as an Ork...keep them coming...I will keep watching...
Stupid question. I haven’t made minis in years and am just getting back into it but what is the blue stuff round pauldron etc. you are using to mask with?
I love how these look by the end! Here's hoping GW bring out a better upgrade sprue for the Space Wolves soon like they're doing for the Dark Angels at the moment. Also if you're finding yellow a problem to paint, i've found Bad Moon Yellow Contrast works well over a light base coat (either Grey Seer/White Scar spray or paint, though I suspect Vallejo Pale Sand may work well as well for a slightly warmer tone.)
Your paint style is very Gundam, The bits look fantastic thanks for showing them off. The only unit that did not look space wolf was the reavers they just looked like reavers outside of that the rest looked fantastic and I reay liked how the walker came out. I agree with you the open canopy is just dumb.
Thanks for the honest critique! I thought the reavers got *mostly* there with the new pauldrons, power packs and heads, but intercessors allow for a little more customization with bracers, greaves and decorations.
Nice work. I did notice you have quite a lot of layer shifts in your prints and might be worth having a look at your z axis rod on your printer. They seem to be happening at the same positions in the printed bases and shields and the paintjobs brings them out more distracting from the otherwise great paint job.
looking fantastic, i wanna start warhammer painting and think about starting with the space wolves. with these exra models they look fantastic, but i am a bit scared that i f.. them up
DO IT! The hobby can be a lot of fun. And don't worry about messing models up. That keeps a LOT of people from getting into the hobby, so you aren't alone - but nobody's first models look great. Watch some basic tutorials on youtube and you'll be good to get started!
@@thehammerofwrath here’s a fun idea: A group of Space Wolves work as muscle for some Kindred, like how actual Vikings would be elite muscle for some kings. All the more reason to add beards, braids and other Viking goodies.
Where in Akihabara do you recommend? I visit fairly often but always end up in yellow submarine (and sometimes paint in Bic Camera). Is there anywhere else that I have missed?
Hit up radio kaikan just outside of the station entrance on the east side. 8 floors of hobby goodness! (there's a ton of other hobby stuff like CCGs and Gunplay as well)
I’ve never been happy with space wolves and not sure I ever will Be. I really want to do my version, but I need to vastly improve my sculpting abilities before this is ever a reality. I think they should Be covered in pelts and talismans and runes. I very much think of them as Vikings and not feral.
Do yourself a favor and check out the images of the full STL pack at greytide stuidios. There are a LOT of bits (over 300) that I didn't use and many are exactly what you're talking about!

Great video. Nice to see the hobby from the perspective of a gamer in Japan. You mentioned Pro Acryl paints, could you tell me which shop carries them? I like their paints a lot, but never found them in any Japanese shops so far. Cheers.
There was a very small selection in akihabara in the radio kaikan building, but I can't recall what floor it was on. (there are several different hobby shops on the floors of a single building)
It's easier to just 3d print my miniatures.. I get exactly what I want and for much cheaper, GW is no longer needed. Their manufacturing proccess, distribution scheme, and business model are stuck in the past. GW is going the way of Hasbro/WotC and many other companies that can't catch up to technology and what customers actually want.
3D printing is the future, but as it currently stands, it's far to niche to go mainstream. The skills needed for printing and handling the resin are far to high a barrier for most people, and 3D printing is a hobby unto itself. There will always be people who aren't interested in the intricacies involved and just want to buy miniatures. On top of that, I've yet to see a 3rd party mini that truly rivals the artistry of GW's sculpts.
@@thehammerofwrath saw the video trying to figure out what model you have and you got me wanting to do two armies space wolves and dark angels watching your videos and i wish i could go to japan it is so beautiful
I have an Anycubic Photon Mono 4K. I use Saratech resin, but have just switched to Anycubic's ABS-like resin. (for the next video) The resin can be a bit bittle for small things like weapons and purity seals, so you have to blend it with a more flexible resin to avoid that. I only cure the parts for 2 minutes.
on the kneepads part first three would look better, using a sharp pencil draw one line in the center upwards the two more at the side these should be a little shorter than the middle one use the lines as a guide to paint them. ps it a lieutenant not a captain after the upgrades yours would pass as a captain pps the don't refer to themselves as space wolves, Vlka Fenryka or the "Wolves of Fenris" is their name
Damn. They look like proper Space Wolves. Even though I'm a Thousand Sons guy they look ..... cool? Better? GW didn't do them justice. Btw do you know where I could get some amazing 3D or normal bits for Thousand Sons, Raven Guard and Blood Angels?
You have a floor next to the bandai namco arcade in akiba!? Is it still there? Do you live in Japan? Can you recommend any places/networks were i can find other foreign resident war gamers? Cheers :)
Do you know about the Hounds of Morkai box? They're Space Wolves flavoured reivers ! Funnily enough they are much better than actual reivers (Who have been a terrible unit rules wise since launch, which is a shame beacuse i love their helmets and idea).
True but as far as their flavor goes it’s like sprinkling a little bit of space wolf on your full dinner dish of reavers, there’s not much for them out of the little sprue they give you.
Consider my pet pieced. Shaving of the Imperialis (That’s what they are called, not Aquilas) from marines is boring. You end up removing the distinctly 40K iconography that all chapters are supposed to wear proudly.
I dunno, I'm not super deep into the lore, but aren't the Wolves not all that worried about following the Codex Astartes? A lot of the artwork I see for them shows the armor without chest embellishment. (And sorry to pet your peeve!) :)
@@thehammerofwrath The winged skull icon, aka the Imperialis, is a badge of honor developed during the Heresy as a way to recognize loyalist forces. Admittedly, by the 41st millennium it became used as a badge of honor awarded to some Astartes to have the right to wear. I’ll also admit that art and models pre-Indomidus Space wolves don’t often have Imperialis badges and those that do have a jewel or wolf skull in place of the human skull. Even official art of Primaris, while mostly wearing the winged human skull, have the chest jewel or the wolf skull. It still bothers me though to see it shaved off. That’s just me, I guess.
If you look closely, I stole one of the diamond shaped gems from the GW upgrade sprue that was on a pouch accessory, snipped it off, shaved down the skull on the Sgt.'s imperialis and replaced it with the gem! ;)
The appeal of Space Wolves were the unique units - Grey Hunters, Blood Claws, Thunderwolf Calvary etc.. Having generic primaris units in a Space Wolves army feels wrong.
I mean you’re able to spend all your time on one hyper focused element of 40k. Of course you’re going to be able to create something that’s better than a coverall approach.
I disagree with the premises that they dropped the ball. It's marketing. They will release all this in time. People forget that the vast range of "flavor" the space marine range had was built up over years even decades of expansion. It wasn't all dropped on day one. If they did drop it all at once they couldn't built and expand, therefore milking that cash cow over the next 20-30years as they did the last.
Personal opinion I like the idea of Greytide and even more so the other people who have been doing custom bits liek this for years like Artel (who still has some of the best bits you can buy), etc but I can't help but see Greytide scaling as a little off. It feel like their bits are like 10% too big and it completely breaks the hero scaling GW uses making thing looks a little off and busy, I'm sure for people with 3d Printers that's easy to fix but for me it's huge turn off. Credit where it's due though you did nice conversion work and painted them up well.
Thanks for the compliment. I did have to scale some of the parts used on my Dark Angels Lion's Guard last spring, but the wolf bits when on without a hitch.
Its a kind of lightly armored space marine GW introduced in 2017. As a unit, almost NOBODY fields them because they have poor rules, and are superseded by other Phobos armored marine types.
I wish you wouldn't walk around filming yourself in Japan. I get it. You want a schtick for your videos. But your videos are great enough without it. I live here and have lived here for 14 years and could do without people walking around doing that. Cheers
Eh, I used a little too much flow improver in the mix. In the end, what difference does it make? It's a priming coat that gets covered with the colors.
Lore tip: Most Space Wolves don't have yellow shoulderpads. The yellow field with the black wolf head is the mark of Ragnar Blackmane's Great Company, it just become GW's studio standard over the years. In fact, most of the great companies colors are either red or black.
Really nice minis btw, I'm very tempted to start Space Wolves with those upgrades, they look amazing.

Awesome! Thank you! and welcome to the channel!
Love the video and really like the end result for your Space Wolves. The color mix is something I will be using! :D
I'm a fellow Japan resident (and Lead Belcher enthusiast). Maybe see you at a game in one of the shops (Akihabara / Jimbocho) and see your wolfy bois in action!
The WH community here is really nice.
That would be cool. Are you on the wargamers in japan discord?
Glad you mentioned cutting space wolves grey with contrast medium. It’s prevented the “coffee staining” on my SW army.
Felt dumb for not having thought of it while I was doing the reivers. :)
They look awesome, the upgrade parts which you printed are definitely an improvement over what GW provides.
I think so too!
Absolutely beautiful work.
Thank you! Cheers!
Great video! Keep em coming! Really enjoying this series.
Thanks, will do!
Awesome conversions and painting!
My only issue is the brown base on the Invictor shield; black would've been more contrast, called to the red and black markings of the rest of the patrol and harkened back to the colour Grey Hunters and Wolf Guard share ^^
I don't disagree!
Hi, Love the way your metalic surfaces turn out. Do you use the Nuln Oil and Agrax Earthshade in a 50/50 mix over the LB or one coat after the other?
agrax first. once that's dry, nuln in the deepest recesses.
I actually enjoy the more absurd elements of 40K, but in this case, for me, the Invictor was just, "Nah, bro." :D
@@thehammerofwrath maybe it'll grow on you? It took awhile before I could appreciate it for what it is, atleast it's not a centurion 😄
(Okay, now the rest of the community can flame me...but, don't care, just my opinion...)
As for the warsuit...I felt the same way you did, I thought it was silly and stupid...but one day I thought, well, it's a way of making a marine more mobile and able to carry a bigger gun/more weapons so not really that opposed to it anymore...
Orks were in "Orktober" of course! Check the channel and you should see it! (I've been doing a patrol every month!)
@@thehammerofwrath watching it now...
Stupid question. I haven’t made minis in years and am just getting back into it but what is the blue stuff round pauldron etc. you are using to mask with?
Poster tac! You can get it at staples or any office supply store. it's meant to hang posters without nails, thumb tacks, etc.
Where did you find the scaling guide for the invictor warsuit? Thank you!
It was included in the top level folder of the .zip file that included all the stls. In a folder titled "Scale Info".
The Army Painter wolf grey is perfect for this, spray the models with it and save yourself a ton of time!
Thanks for the tip! I'm trying to get into their partner program as well.
Nice work. I did notice you have quite a lot of layer shifts in your prints and might be worth having a look at your z axis rod on your printer. They seem to be happening at the same positions in the printed bases and shields and the paintjobs brings them out more distracting from the otherwise great paint job.
It was the FEP. I switched that out after printing the base toppers and everything was smooth from there.
Incredible work 😮
Thank you! Cheers!
looking fantastic, i wanna start warhammer painting and think about starting with the space wolves. with these exra models they look fantastic, but i am a bit scared that i f.. them up
DO IT! The hobby can be a lot of fun. And don't worry about messing models up. That keeps a LOT of people from getting into the hobby, so you aren't alone - but nobody's first models look great. Watch some basic tutorials on youtube and you'll be good to get started!
Should it be mandatory that all Space Wolves (and Leagues of Votann) should have magnificent beards, braids and possess booze?
Yes. Yes it should. Also, all axes and no swords!
@@thehammerofwrath here’s a fun idea:
A group of Space Wolves work as muscle for some Kindred, like how actual Vikings would be elite muscle for some kings. All the more reason to add beards, braids and other Viking goodies.
Enjoyed this one!
Yay, thank you!
Excellent work
Thank you! Cheers!
(there's a ton of other hobby stuff like CCGs and Gunplay as well)
@@thehammerofwrath thanks! Next there in September so will add it to my list!
AMAZING ❤❤❤
Wolfie, wolf, wolves, woof, woofs!
Really cool.
thank you!
I’ve never been happy with space wolves and not sure I ever will
Be.
I really want to do my version, but I need to vastly improve my sculpting abilities before this is ever a reality.
I think they should
Be covered in pelts and talismans and runes.
I very much think of them as Vikings and not feral.
Do yourself a favor and check out the images of the full STL pack at greytide stuidios. There are a LOT of bits (over 300) that I didn't use and many are exactly what you're talking about!
Thanks man! Ive downloaded the stls recently and youve given me some great ideas! Any chance you have that bracket stl available somewhere? Cheers!
Oh, the one that goes over the handle of the axe?
@thehammerofwrath yes! Great little detail
Scrounged through my STL folder and can't find it! If I come across it, I'll load it to my cults 3D page for free.
@@thehammerofwrath thanks man!
you could've cut out a lot of issues by basing russ grey and then thin contrast coat of SW grey
That's certainly a valid recipe, but then it wouldn't have the subtle electric blue tint that the vallejo paint gives it.
@@thehammerofwrath that's tru. i should have timestamped my comment as it was owing more to the 3 or so attempts prior to the blue and fenrisian mix (also yeah SW grey needs to be mixed with medium as it covers really badly)
It definitely took me stumbling around it to find a recipe that worked, but we often learn most from our failures. And I fail, like, a LOT. :)
@@thehammerofwrath as do we all lol
Just put the tip of your brush wirh no paint in it to pick up the pooling unhad issues with
Great video.
@@thehammerofwrath Thanks, will try and check it out next time I'm there
Stunning!!!!!
Thank you!!
Holy shit! 🔥🫶
Ive always preferred the more standard, less “Vikings in space” space wolves look 🤷♂️
Greytide stutio FTW!
Really cool!
Thanks!
great paintjob but i cant unsee that you didnt clean all the mold lines
What? Where? I spent hours scraping these things!
Can’t stop the signal. Keep printing
Magnifique !
merci!
i was wondering what is a good resin printer for beginners
I have a video for that! Check my channel - it's one of the first videos I ever made!
@@thehammerofwrath saw the video trying to figure out what model you have and you got me wanting to do two armies space wolves and dark angels watching your videos and i wish i could go to japan it is so beautiful
Why not do a little of both armies! They don't have to be big - just a few test models!
@@thehammerofwrath i was wondering what nipper you use now the gohand or the mr hobby kind looking at getting some tools for doing warhammer minis
I use Mr. Hobby SINGLE-SIDED nippers. You can see them in action in the March Combat Patrol.
Very nice sir.
Thanks! Glad you liked it.
Awesome job mate 🇦🇺👍🏻
Thanks 👍
Love your work. What printer and resin do you use? and how brittle are your resin prints? What cure time do you use?
I have an Anycubic Photon Mono 4K. I use Saratech resin, but have just switched to Anycubic's ABS-like resin. (for the next video) The resin can be a bit bittle for small things like weapons and purity seals, so you have to blend it with a more flexible resin to avoid that. I only cure the parts for 2 minutes.
@@thehammerofwrathI use anycubic with 10-15% Siraya tenacious mixed in and it fixes all the brittleness 👍
@@mitchcameron yeah, I actually mixed ST tenacious with the ST fast when printing the purity seals for the large Sister of Battle statue.
Wow!
on the kneepads part first three would look better, using a sharp pencil draw one line in the center upwards the two more at the side these should be a little shorter than the middle one use the lines as a guide to paint them.
ps it a lieutenant not a captain after the upgrades yours would pass as a captain
pps the don't refer to themselves as space wolves, Vlka Fenryka or the "Wolves of Fenris" is their name
Good tip! Thanks!
17:39 Clearly you have not used Vallejo Air Metalics yet.
I have NOT. Are they amazing?!
They are fantastic. If you want to airbrush bare metal aircraft, they are the best acrylic I have used to date. All so work well with brush painting.
It appears a trip to Akihabara is in order, then...
Cool
A hat on a hat you say, I think the Team Fortress 2 community would like a chat with you 😂
Damn. They look like proper Space Wolves. Even though I'm a Thousand Sons guy they look ..... cool? Better? GW didn't do them justice.
Btw do you know where I could get some amazing 3D or normal bits for Thousand Sons, Raven Guard and Blood Angels?
I usually troll cults 3D a few times a week. You have to be clever with your search terms, but there are plenty of artists making additional bits.
You have a floor next to the bandai namco arcade in akiba!? Is it still there? Do you live in Japan? Can you recommend any places/networks were i can find other foreign resident war gamers? Cheers :)
There is a discord group called "wargamers in Japan".
Do you know about the Hounds of Morkai box? They're Space Wolves flavoured reivers ! Funnily enough they are much better than actual reivers (Who have been a terrible unit rules wise since launch, which is a shame beacuse i love their helmets and idea).
True but as far as their flavor goes it’s like sprinkling a little bit of space wolf on your full dinner dish of reavers, there’s not much for them out of the little sprue they give you.
phenominal job
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it.
Tbh in retrospect, if space wolves had no animal in their theme it would be for the better
I dunno, I kinda dig the pelts and fangs and stuff! :)
And that's why we spruce them up with themed bits! (although I'd LOVE some updated thunderwolf cavalry!)
I mean you’re able to spend all your time on one hyper focused element of 40k. Of course you’re going to be able to create something that’s better than a coverall approach.
Well, it's not really about the time spent, but the fact that the official GW "Upgrade" sprues are so lacking in character.
I disagree with the premises that they dropped the ball.
It's marketing.
They will release all this in time.
People forget that the vast range of "flavor" the space marine range had was built up over years even decades of expansion. It wasn't all dropped on day one.
If they did drop it all at once they couldn't built and expand, therefore milking that cash cow over the next 20-30years as they did the last.
puppies!
Personal opinion
I like the idea of Greytide and even more so the other people who have been doing custom bits liek this for years like Artel (who still has some of the best bits you can buy), etc but I can't help but see Greytide scaling as a little off.
What the hell are reavers?!
Its a kind of lightly armored space marine GW introduced in 2017. As a unit, almost NOBODY fields them because they have poor rules, and are superseded by other Phobos armored marine types.
Why do they look so old. Space AARP Wolves 😭
I like my space vikings old and grizzled! (long-in-the-tooth, as it were)
ItsAGundam
I wish you wouldn't walk around filming yourself in Japan. I get it. You want a schtick for your videos. But your videos are great enough without it. I live here and have lived here for 14 years and could do without people walking around doing that. Cheers
I actually enjoy that! You’re lucky to know all this for the rest of us an extra bit of knowledge doesn’t hurt 🤷🏼♂️
You gotta clean your airbrush or adjust it or something--its spattering all over--sloppy
Eh, I used a little too much flow improver in the mix. In the end, what difference does it make? It's a priming coat that gets covered with the colors.
Space wolves suck. They have the lamest models. Don’t even get me started how stupid their wolverine squad is. Iykyk
Boo! You are stinky!
Meh, anyone can do this with 3d printed bits.
Yes. That was the point of the video. Well done.
Space Wolves are cringe in every way
