Annoying yes. Not as annoying as someone mowing a yard, hitting something that stalls the engine, restarting, then repeat, over and over, and over again.
I hit something once that stalled my mower engine - permanently. The crank shaft got bent. I would think any time a stall by hitting would do some damage to engine, break blade, etc.
@@donyboy73 There was a guy I knew who had really tall grass to cut with a push mower: he'd push it into the grass, engine would stall. Pull the mower back, restart the engine, push it in again and stall the engine. Over and over. He didn't know to ease into the grass to avoid stalling, or to listen to the engine to tell when to ease up. Incredible.
Had a surging problem and found a video that said to check that the fuel cap vent wasn't plugged. Checked my cap and found dirt in the cap, cleaned it, and problem was gone! Easiest fix I ever had! It's not always the carburetor!
Thanks! PEOPLE EMPHASIZE ON THE TOP JET! Had my carb apart 10 times cause of surging! This jet was the culprit. Donny nailed it. Not many people FOCUS ON THIS JET! Saved my mower!
Attaboy DB73; I ran my snow blower for 2 years with it surging and hopping it would keep running and make it back to the House, It's to heavy for one person to manage it, till I found your channel. I fixed the carb in a similar way and its been running smooth for about 3 years now. Thanks Bud !!. You are the best.🙂
This repair 100% worked for me. I had this surging issue on a Honda gcv190 engine mounted to a pressure washer. The second jet with the screw you had to remove (5:26) seemed to be my main issue. It was difficult to find a micro drill bit around my area. Finally found one and it took some time and patience to drill it out but eventually I got it. No more surging. Thank you so much!
Thanks Don for making the video. My mower wasn't surging near as bad as yours, but it was still surging up and down. After doing your suggestions, its running smoother than ever.
Thanks for the video. Appreciated. One GCV-160-AS3A Honda engine carburetor cleaned up and running great. Symptoms were it would only run on choke. When I took the choke off to a high speed it would start to surge. Took the carb off and totally cleaned it right out and put it back together. It started on the first pull and now idles at all speed settings. Thanks again from a DIY'er. Cheers
Very helpful video, after thoroughly cleaning the pilot jets my 2 pressure washer engines work perfectly now. I recently picked up 2 craftsman pressure washers at Lowes for only $25 each, they were customer returns being sold as parts only. I'm guessing the people couldn't get them started so returned them. Turns out both carbs just needed to be cleaned really good. The 1st time I failed to remove and clean the pilot jets and both machines surged with the choke off, so after watching this video I located the pilot jets and unblocked them with a bread tie wire, they were completely blocked.
We're not going to the moon. We're just cutting grass. Stop overthinking and over complicating things. I hear other small engine mechanics say the same thing and it's good advice.
Hi Don, many thanks for your video which pinpointed exactly where the problem was with my mower. I would have followed your advice in stripping down the carb but I thought I would run some Redex through the engine first, which had no immediate result as expected, and so I left the mower in my garage for a few days to give it a chance to work its magic and today it started first time and ran like new. Thanks again, Dave in the UK
So glad I came across this video… my nephew took it upon himself to mow my lawn and put in the weed eater oil/gas mixture and it sounds like this. I plan to take apart the carb again as I had before for a different issue, and I’m hoping I have good results.
Hello Don! Thanks for this video! I have been cleaning the carbs but never enlarged the jets! You just show me a new trick! We learn something new every day! Keep it up!
This video was so helpful. Thank you a million times! I cleaned the gas tank and the carburetor just like he shows, except I only sprayed everything with carb cleaner. I did not drill out the jets. Mower works like new again!!!
Female here - I magine that’s rare 😂 This is exactly what my lawnmower is doing. Plus it almost sounds like it’s going to backfire but hasn’t yet. It’s kind of coughing and spluttering. If I can fix something myself I will. I fixed my dishwasher once. Found the faulty part ordered it online and installed it, saved myself $250. These instructions are very clear and very methodical. As long as I follow each step I should be right. I don’t have a drill so I won’t be drilling to enlarge any holes. Maybe a fine pin or needle might clear it. The other annoying issue I have is the clip director won’t stay in place which means I can’t keep it in mulch mode and can only keep it in bag mode. I suspect there’s a spring missing. Wish me luck! Update. The guy at Bunnings had no idea what a JIS screw was so I couldn’t get the driver I needed so couldn’t get in to clean the idle circuit. But whatever I could clean did the trick. No more surging. Thankyou so much for this video!
I have to do the same to my Ariens snowblower, it surges a bit as well. I'm guilty of putting it away and not fixing the issue. Spring and then summer came so fast I just never got to it and since of course, I don't need it then, it rarely crosses my mind with the mental "things to do" list. Thanks for the reminder I'll have to get on it.
Just cleaning as suggested in other sites didn't do the trick. What fixed the problem was enlarging the jet holes. I used a Gauge 75 drill on both jets. The engine is running faster, thou. Thanks for the tip.
Great video! I watched this video several or more times to study it. I have a new Honda mower that’s only a few months old, it didn’t take long to start reving up and down all the time; also hard to start. My wife really didn’t like it at all. I tried several different things, but still raced up and down. I bought some new replacement gaskets and mini drill bits. I did everything you described, except that you never mentioned the size drill bit for the bottom Jet; where the mulsion tube goes. But I figured it out, process of elimination. I got the jets drilled out best I could, cleaned everything out, put new gaskets on got the carb put together and back on the mower. I cleaned the spark plug, and the mower started right up! I let it run for quite awhile, and tried to see if I could make it race up and down again; but couldn’t. It always ran nice and smooth! Thanks for your help! I hope my wife will be happy with it. 🙂👍
Great video. Very helpful and a practical solution to a common problem. I agree about carbs on Honda engines - difficult to put it all back on. What I've done is purchase some M6 X120mm threaded rod and screw them into the block and then slip everything on and get it aligned. Once I'm comfortable I have it all aligned then I remove the rods one at a time and put in the hold down bolts. I've cut a slot in one end of the threaded rods to assist in removing the rods if they happen to get stuck in the block. Has worked like a charm.
"I don't have the torque specs, we're not working on the space shuttle here." - similar to my standard saying when working on projects on the farm: "We're not building fine furniture." Excellent as always.
I adjusted the idol arm to solve this problem. My theory was that things just rattled and “broke-in”. I’m glad you posted this video, this problem is so common.
Donyboy73, I thank you very much for your time, and for your informative videos . I've saved quite a bit of money subscribing to your channel and doing the work myself. I encourage everyone else to do so as well. Stay safe, and thanks again.
I agree with you. The carburetors on the Honda are much more difficult to reassemble with 3 gaskets, springs, hoses fuel lines and threading all of that through the air filter housing into 2 holes while positioning the choke lever. Time to re-design this!
A friend gave me a 42" Troy Bilt riding mower, it was pretty beat up (lack of maintenance) and made considerable amount of repairs. The engine is a Kohler Courage 19 HP and it surged like the Honda you were working on. The carburetor is very similar to the one on my Kohler, same gasket problems and throttle and governor linkage.
I have a very old Murray push mower 20 inch. It has started doing that too. I had to replace the diaphragm, it wouldn't start. Now it runs, but surges. This is really great info. I'll try this. Thank you for the info. Donyboy for the win !!!
Hey Don,..... Your TH-cam channel is the "go-to channel" for any small engine repair. 👍 The lawnmower I'm having a problem with is a Troy - Built TB 110 550EX 140cc engine. My son purchased this for me 2 years ago. It started having problems with stalling out and not starting, I will take the carburetor off and tear it down to investigate, there was no problem I can see. I reinstalled it, and it would run normally for five to six cuts. Then the problem with it is that it keeps repeat itself and I'll have to go through the process of working on the carburetor again. Well, I bought a new carburetor, installed it, and now my engine is revving up and down. What do you think is causing the first problem? Second, what's the problem with this carburetor I bought online? 😂😆 Thanking you in advance. 👍
How's she goin'? It's amazing at how many times a carb gets dirty and causes engine problems and people just give up on the engine. A quick cleaning and you're back in business!! Thanks for posting!!!
I found your Video a little too late to help me today, but it was a good video. I had already torn apart my Carb and Cleaned it, with special attention to the Jets. I never thought about Drilling out the Jets. I do have some small drill bits from when I drilled out the Jets on my Motorcycle years ago, but these bits were a little bit too big for this job. Guess I'll have to go visit a local Hobby Shop and buy the right size bit for the next time this happens (I'm sure it will happen). I have a Very Small Hand Drill for Small Bits like this, I purchased it at the Hobby Shop. I also had to make a couple of Gaskets as the Gaskets I removed had some areas where I wasn't sure if they were sealing or not. I purchased a Sheet of Gasket Material at a local Automotive Store years ago and already had it on hand. Again, thanks for the great video!
Your Absolutely Right About The Honda Carburetors Being Aggregating To install and they are almost impossible to find good used ones as well, here were I live
Very helpful information. I have a generator that runs smoothly only at half choke. I've run carb cleaner through it and it's a bit better. Should I just remove the carb and clean or keep running fresh gas with carb cleaner? Thanks.
What a fantastically informative video. I sent my lawnmower to engineer because it wouldn't start after winter. Cleaned air filter, plug and new petrol in tank . Cleaned carburettor too but unfortunately I rebuilt it wrong😂. Couldn't remember the order of the gaskets. Checked fuel filter it was clean too. The engineer sent it back with note saying carburettor rebuilt wrongly. Duh! I'd told them about that when they collected it. They Cleaned air filter again and put on new plug. Sharpened blade and sent back to me, sayingit was running perfectly. First time I tried it, it was surging when hot. Sent back to engineer. Its back and fine now. Didn't see when they dropped it off but on sheet was written W U D in additional parts section. What is that please? Just wondering if I'm going to get another bill. Unless it stands for Wot u doing? Haha. I'm 74 y o woman.
The jet you enlarged is the idle circuit jet. When the engine is running under little or no load it is pulling gas from the idle circuit as well as the main jet. When the engine is under load or the rpm is increased it will pull more gas from the main jet. Usually I can get them to come back with a good blast in the ultrasonic cleaner. There is a thin channel in the main stem if the carburetor which often becomes blocked. Enlarging the idle circuit jet should only be done as an absolute last resort, some times as these engine age and wear, they simply need more gas to idle which is why this technique helps. However if you enlarge the idle circuit without properly cleaning the carburetor you are not actually solving the problem.
They make things over complicated so you don't try fixing your own stuff and have to take it back to the main dealers to get ripped off at the shoulder big thanks for guys like you sharing your tips n tricks 👌👏🏴
Easy method to replace carb. Cut 2 X 6-inch lengths of earthing cable (5mm diam) or similar. Push the cables into the manifold first (where the carb long bolts normally go). Then thread onto the cables your gaskets and carb and gasket and air filter housing onto the cables. Push to hold your carb in place and pull out one of the cables and insert and fasten the long bolt. Then do same for other one. Done.
I use a thin-diameter phillips-head to align those bolt holes, inserting one in the tha far hole and then after the near bolt is in, remove the phillips and install the second bolt. It is a stupid design IMHO. Thanks for your tip!
Very useful - very well explained and shot video. This video is going to help a lot of people out. You're one of the few that's going straight to Heaven Donyboy !
Thank you for this great video!! I have a Cub Cadet SC300 HW with automatic choke that has a bad surging problem. It sounds just like the one you demonstrated but ends up stalling out after a minute or so. I have fresh gas, installed a new gas filter, air filter and new spark plug with proper gap. Swapped the gas caps off of my other identical SC300. Also changed the oil which is just below the full mark. All with no change. These gas caps have a solid top but, there is a hole in the inner side of them. I have a question since your Honda engine is different than mine. Since I have an auto choke, is there something else I need to look for other than cleaning the jets as you did? Thanks again, appreciate it.
Great video! My mower only surges temporarily every time I go full throttle. It does it for about 10 to 15 seconds and then continues to run smoothly afterwards still at full throttle. Is this still a carburetor jet issue like in the video or could it be something else? It just seems odd that it only surges for a short period of time and not continually.
Surging troybilt tiller OHH60. Purchased in 2000. The carb was corroded a quite dirty so I replaced the carb. It is surging. Does this mean that the carb is dirty or could the fuel line be defective. Never changed that before. Thanks foe all the education.
What do you think ? mine was working fine until I refill after moweing and started to loose power, until it stopped and no power and surge I changed to fresh fuel and it is still the same, thanks
Thankyou for the video. Use this cure regularly but only 1 issue. Drill bits breaking. I cant seem to find a quality bit. At least not on amazon. Do you have any suggestions of a good brand/source? .010/.015 size I assume.
Thank you for the great video. I tried everything you did except i didn't drill out that small jet under the phillips screw, can you tell me the actual size of that drillbit because the smallest one I can find is 1.0 mm (millimetre)
I have a zero turn mower with a similar problem and I just got it out of the repair shop and it seem to be surging some and the guy is suppose to stop by and check it for me, and I will have him check the second mower which isn't cranking at all now. The battery may be one problem on that mower and that mower is cheaper, but nearly new and can't figure out why it won't start and run. Thanks for the tip on the mower you worked on.
i need help Dony. I'm on my third carburetor and second engine with the same problem. Its the briggs and stratton EX engines with the Plastic Carb and auto choke. I've replaced the Jet Assembly 3 or 4 times now and have put on a new carburetor as well as enlarging the main jet. Still surging. No matter what i do the mower will still do the same after a minute or two. Starts surging and hunting , revving up and down. What am i missing ? got to be a vacuum leak is all i can think of but from where. ??
I have the same honda engine .. after cleaning the carb and put on sonic cleaner .. my mower still hard to start and takes a few pull.. and when it ran a few minutes .. it's still hard to restart it again.. could it be a really bad carburetor and I need a new carburetor.. when do you consider that it's time to replace the carborator?
I cleaned my carburetor using this video, it was helpful and stopped the surging but now my mower runs at super high idle. Same setup except I have an auto choke system on mine. Please help.
Hello Don. I've got a CT Yardworks model with the no choke and no prime engine. Surges like crazy. Will I be able to do this on that carb? The butterfly doesn't seem to stick but I also have to use the carb cleaner to get it running most times unless it's warm. Thanks for the excellent videos! You've helped a lot of us out over the years!
so, my mower is the powermore 173cc , same carb as the second one you showed there with the plastic screw and pilot jet with the jet inside it shown at the 6:00 mark. i cleaned that out and opened it up 13thou just like you did, as well as the emulsion tube inside as you showed with the first carb. both have been cleaned up and opened up the exact same as you did in this video. i also replaced all gaskets and cleaned everything within the carb (im an automotive technician but i dont do small engines at all!). I have it all back together the same way it came apart, and i still am having the surging issue, worse if anything. sometimes the engine wont even run without having the choke on! any ideas? I got the mower for free from my father in law so its not a huge issue, i also have a few briggs and stratton older engines kicking around ill use if i have to, but id like to get this one fixed up as its super easy on fuel, i can do my lawn three times on a 2 dollar tank of fuel!
Thanks for the video I use seafoam always in my premium fuel and I put a fuel filter on my honda I also spray some carb cleaner in the carb every few tank's of fuel never have this problem
I have been using Seafoam for ten years in my power equipment and my cars. Before I go to the gas station with my 5 gal. gas cans I put 5 OZ of Seafoam in the empty cans and fill with Plus Grade. Every three months or so I take a can of Seafoam to the gas station and dump it in the car's tank before I put the gas in. Results: I have not had a problem with any of the engines that I treat with Seafoam - Lawn equipment starts right up in the spring and Snow moving equipment starts right when I need it. My cars? I have not seen a "Check Engine" light since I started using Seafoam. Full Disclosure - I am not affiliated in any way with the manufacture, distribution or selling of Seafoam. It just works!

I've really cut down on a huge amount of my carburetor issues when I started shutting everything down using a fuel shutoff valve.
Why oh why don’t they put a shutoff on every motor! I agree run carb dry and you won’t have any issues!
Run it dry and let it die baby
Thanks for helping it wasnt any of these issues but i opened the carb and saw the issue immediately

I also had to make a couple of Gaskets as the Gaskets I removed had some areas where I wasn't sure if they were sealing or not. I purchased a Sheet of Gasket Material at a local Automotive Store years ago and already had it on hand.
Again, thanks for the great video!
WERE NOT WORKING ON THE SPACE SHUTTLE,.....I LOVE THAT BRO,.....NICE WORK !!!
Your Absolutely Right About The Honda Carburetors Being Aggregating To install and they are almost impossible to find good used ones as well, here were I live
Same problem here. Thank you for your very useful video.
Once again Dony, YOU explained my problem Thank you!
Thanks for this. My jets were plugged with debris from corosion due to not draining the ethanol gas at the end of the season.
Very helpful information. I have a generator that runs smoothly only at half choke. I've run carb cleaner through it and it's a bit better. Should I just remove the carb and clean or keep running fresh gas with carb cleaner? Thanks.
Before re assembly you can buff out the needle valve seat a bit with a q tip chucked up in a drill to clean up any corrosion or dirt. Good video.
Thank you! Was skeptical with my non-mechanic fingers but it actually worked for my cheap ass YardKing mower!
Great video this is going to help many people out including myself.
They make things over complicated so you don't try fixing your own stuff and have to take it back to the main dealers to get ripped off at the shoulder big thanks for guys like you sharing your tips n tricks 👌👏🏴
Nice video! I put a new gasket set on a cub cadet carb. I agree it seems overly complicated.
I just replace entire carb
@@donyboy73 That’s what I actually did. I just remembered the gasket set part.
Done.
cut the heads off longer bolts worked for me
I use a thin-diameter phillips-head to align those bolt holes, inserting one in the tha far hole and then after the near bolt is in, remove the phillips and install the second bolt. It is a stupid design IMHO. Thanks for your tip!
Beauty... have the same engine but it runs fine, at least I know what to do if it starts acting up.. thanks Dr.👍
My Cub Cadet surges from day ONE and will only run partially choked. Thanks for this video - I don't expect dirt to be the issue, but...never assume!
Very useful - very well explained and shot video.
This video is going to help a lot of people out.
You're one of the few that's going straight to Heaven Donyboy !
Another great video. Thanks Donny. When working with drill bits that small I normally use a pin vise.
i also have a few
Great tutorial! Thanks for using a lav mic and getting great audio.
Excellent!! I learned something new. I appreciate your videos. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. You’re really good at what you do.
So helpful... Appreciate you sharing your knowledge and keeping it simple for us "weekend warriors". 🙏🏻
My truck is doing that idle with the a/c on. 2011 Chevy 3500 w/6.0 gas burner. Still need to troubleshoot it not check engine lights yet.
You're an awesome mechanic,God Bless, keep up the good work!
Awesome tips I’ve done that myself a timer to but great advice
Thanks!
Merci!
Surging troybilt tiller OHH60. Purchased in 2000. The carb was corroded a quite dirty so I replaced the carb. It is surging. Does this mean that the carb is dirty or could the fuel line be defective. Never changed that before. Thanks foe all the education.
Recently found your channel. Absolutely love your video work and clear explanations!!! THANK YOU.
Thanks Don I learn something new each time .
Don, always helpful advice. Hope your wife is ok, God bless you for being a Home Carer.
I have a cadet dang good mower when its running I might have revisit it this gives me inspiration thanks!
Great tip. Thank you for sharing. 🇨🇦😎
I wish I'd have found this channel earlier.. great work Don!
Why wouldn't you just take the battery out of the first mower and put it in the second mower to check if the battery is the problem?
Once again, excellent video in composition and delivery. Great job.
Excellent video as always. Thank you Mr. Donyboy73.
Wow, I never knew about this trick! Awesome. Thanks, Don.
i need help Dony. ??
Did all the cleaning steps just like you, still surged. Ordered a brand new carb, still have same exact issue. New gas also. Any thoughts?
Great video 👍👍👍👍👍
GODBLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS AND EVERYONE..
so, my mower is the powermore 173cc , same carb as the second one you showed there with the plastic screw and pilot jet with the jet inside it shown at the 6:00 mark. i cleaned that out and opened it up 13thou just like you did, as well as the emulsion tube inside as you showed with the first carb. both have been cleaned up and opened up the exact same as you did in this video. i also replaced all gaskets and cleaned everything within the carb (im an automotive technician but i dont do small engines at all!).
