Briggs & Stratton Quantum Engine (5 HP) | Restoration

  • The restoration of the Briggs & Stratton engine is one part of the project I am working on: a complete renovation of the mower.
    This project took me a really long time. I paid a lot of attention to both the interior and the exterior. I replaced a lot of old parts with new ones, some parts were missing so I had to get them and most of the other parts were restored. Because of easier editing, publishing and because I don't want a long video ..... I divided the project of restoration of the complete mower into several parts (stages).
    This is the second part of the project. The same day I uploaded the first part: Carburetor Cleaning. The link is at the bottom of the description. Testing will be in the last part, which I plan to finish in a few days.
    The engine was in a neglected condition, no attention was paid to its maintenance. I did my best to get this engine in the best condition I could. I hope I succeeded in that. The engine number is 12H802-1928.
    I hope you find something useful and enjoy this video!
    Any comment, criticism and suggestion are welcome.

    Bravo for your work. You have no problem with the fuel pump? I have an engine like this and I can't get fuel into the carburetor. I have an air leak somewhere that I can't find. 😒

    • @fastfixks
      @fastfixks  16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The most common solutions to your problem are: hard hoses, so they can burst (replace new fuses for the same hoses), fuel pump - your rubber part is not working because it does not inject fuel as it should (change only the rubber part ), the carburetor is clogged (clean it or, in extreme cases, replace it with a new one). I will leave the link on how to clean the carburetor below, so see how I did it in a simple way.
      th-cam.com/video/gkpoEB9VJNg/w-d-xo.html
      I would add something else only, if your gasoline is old or has been sitting for a long time in a canister or in the tank itself....you must drain all the gasoline from the entire system and buy a new one and pour it in. Someone leaves it standing in the tank all winter and later, of course, cannot start the lawnmower because of the old gasoline that loses its properties over the winter.

    Thank you very much for the video! But I'd like to ask you some questions.
    1) Did you use a repair manual 1330?
    2) What torque is used for tightening rod connecting screws on 11:30?
    3) What material did you use for gaskets on 12:31 and 13:30? Is their thickness important?
    Thanks!

    • @fastfixks
      @fastfixks  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for watching and commenting. I hope I'm not too late with the answer. I will try to answer as precisely as possible in the text below.
      1) I didn't have the manual that comes with the new lawnmower, so I used the internet and found some necessary information there. You can search on the official website of Briggs & Stratton
      2) At 11:30 I tightened by feel, I did not use a torque wrench.
      3) At 12:31, I manually made a gasket from the material "klingerit" for gaskets. I don't know how to translate that word, but here's a link to see what those boards look like, which are used to make gaskets.
      images.app.goo.gl/3Pd7NocRZ3TvGYz37
      At 13:30 I used the original gasket intended for this mower. You can buy it in a local shop that sells parts for work machines, and you can also buy it on ebay.
      The thickness is important, but you won't go wrong if you put a little thicker or thinner, all in a reasonable measure. At 12:31 you can even use silicone resistant to high temperatures instead of a gasket, but of course it's better if you can find a gasket. At 13:30 you definitely can't and shouldn't use that (silicone).
      I hope I could help a little.

    • @fastfixks
      @fastfixks  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hello
      Nothing crucial is missing. It's the throttle cable, the throttle cable stiffener, the cover and some screws that hold those parts in place.
      Below I will post a playlist and in the last video you can see that I just connected the gas cable, which was not even there when I started to restore this mower.

      When I removed that part it was in one position and when I put the bearing back I did it from another position. I did this because it was so easy to do but it doesn’t matter because the crankshaft rotates as needed. It is much easier to tighten the screws in the second position. But the end position does not affect the work, I could turn to some "third" position and it would not matter.

    Dang... I came here to see what my engine is missing. Throttle assembly seems off and is not returning back to the off position. Loved that you pointed out "Some missing parts here" at 00:21, but then you didn't address what was missing and then that piece was assembled off camera. Can you describe what was missing and what you needed to fix? My engine seems to resemble the exact state yours was at the beginning of the video

    • @fastfixks
      @fastfixks  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello
      First, thank you for watching and commenting. I'm really glad when I see that my videos can help someone and be useful. Of course, it may not have helped you completely, but let's try to solve that too.
      There are three parts missing: the gas cable, the metal cover that closes the whole situation and the screw that tightens the mentioned cover. I will leave the link below, watch that video and it will surely be clearer to you what exactly is missing and maybe you will conclude what is the problem with your lawnmower.
      Maybe I can guess what could be your problem. Check the spring that tightens the gas mechanism, it can be seen in that frame (00:21) where I show that something is missing. If you have such a spring, it does not necessarily mean that it is working correctly, even though it has not broken, it does not mean that it is correct. Over time, this spring loses its strength and strength, and it is necessary to replace it. It is a consumable part, so it can be found and bought separately.
      I hope that I explained well and that my answer helped you at least a little.

  • @flymagic11

    Just out of curiosity, is the carburetor throttle controlled by the linkage that enters with the rod on the rear?
    But how does the throttle control lower and raise the revs if it is not physically connected to the carburettor butterfly if not by that particular spring. You can remove this doubt from me as I too have the same engine and disassembling it because it doesn't start I saw this technical detail. Thank you

    • @fastfixks
      @fastfixks  ปีที่แล้ว

      You are right, of course it is controlled that way. Only in this video it is not shown.
      I divided the video into 4 parts, this is just one of them.
      I will leave a link to the entire playlist below so you can see that the throttle is connected to the carburetor.

    So basically all you did is waste a bunch of time cleaning an engine. Cool

      You are right, so don't make the same mistake.

    what was the flywheel torque in in.lbs please ?

    • @fastfixks
      @fastfixks  ปีที่แล้ว

      This model is rated at 60 ft.lbs
      Mostly older models go from 55-60 ft.lbs.
      Those bigger and stronger models that for example have two cylinders go over 100 ft.lbs, even up to 150 ft.lbs

    There is nothing in the video on the govener spring install or demo on the connecting moving parts. So it didnt help.

      I think you are wrong my friend. This is one of a total of 4 parts of the mower restoration. I will leave you a playlist of videos below, so watch everything and you will see that I have shown every part of the restoration. Take a look and let me know.

      @fastfixks watched all 4 and there isnt anything on the spring you skip over it in the engine resto. There is a spring (govenor spring) going from the carby to a guide arm into the engine which you dont show moving so you can see how it activates. I wanted to see how the sppring works to open and close the throttle as mine is not really doing anything. It doesn't retract back to close the valve in the carby. I was hoping to see it in action.

      @fastfixks you fiddle with it at second 20 of the video and it doesnt seem to be working but nothing on it post retro.

      @@troychaplin2846 That's what you mean.
      I don't know how it's not on the video, but I did that part too.
      I just cleaned the whole part well, I even used sandpaper to remove the rust so that the mechanism could "move" more easily.
      It is mandatory to change the spring, regardless of the fact that it is not broken to the eye, it weakens over time and cannot do its job, i.e. by pulling the gas cable, the spring does not have enough strength to transfer it to the lever (part from the 20th second).
      You can even see that the spring has weakened (as if it has stretched).
      English is not my native language, I hope I helped at least a little and explained well. Maybe some key words are not well translated, but you will understand which part I meant.

      @@jozsefgalo621 Hallo
      Ich habe es in einem örtlichen Geschäft gekauft, das Rasenmäherteile verkauft. Ich komme aus Bosnien, also wenn es hier erhältlich ist, dann ist es sicherlich auch bei Ihnen in Ungarn erhältlich. Sie müssen nur nach einem Geschäft suchen. Ein Geschäft, das Rasenmäher verkauft, muss Ersatzteile haben. Sie können auch bei ebay bestellen, müssen aber etwa einen Monat warten.
