Here is a tip to add to your great video. After many years, the rubber strap will not come loose and give you slack after removing the bolt. Put the long bolt back in, thread it a bit. Then push the long bolt sticking out firmly inwards, and it will dislodge the strap, and giving you slack to unclip.

Pro tip right here. So appreciate it. I was using pliers to try to loosen that strap, and it wouldn’t budge. Your tip did the trick. Thank you!

This was super helpful. I installed a similar (or maybe the same) Yakima system, back in 2015. We've moved several times since, so any instructions I had with the system are long lost. But, I havce the keys, and with these instructions I should be able to remove the roof rack!

Don’t take the bolt all the way out. If you do then you have to rethread it to get it back together. Why not just loosen the bolt enough so that you can just pull the tab over the lip? I loosen the bolt push it in to take tension off the strap and pop it off. Saves a good deal of time and frustration.

Thank you very much! I thought I needed to unscrew behind the keycore rather than the external bolt below ( I was not the original installer). Very helpful video!

You don’t have to take the screws out. Just loosen the screw and push it in. That will allow you to remove the strap from the holder.

Yeh, it's more of a pain in the ass to get the screw back in too. Just loosen screw for enough slack. If they've been on for a minute, you just gotta give the bar a little impact bump with your palm to get the strap to unseize.

I think the dealer installed Yakima rack wasn't made for my car. I followed your instructions but I can't get the strap to loosen. Any thoughts?

Hi Scott, I lost the key to lock and unlock, how can I get the alternate key to open the lock? I have the same exact one like in your video. Thank you.

My tab was very stubborn in coming off. Had to use pliers. Outer covers also put up a fight. Could be this is a brand new system.

Thank you! That is how I thought it would work, but my old arthritic hands did not have the strength to pull the tab. I thought that I had missed something. I'm just too damned weak(I hope I will still have the strength to pull the trigger!).

I just burned through 2 hours of frustrating madness because these instructions are incorrect. NEVER remove the long bolts that connect to the rubber straps if you ever have any intention of putting the towers back on. Trying to line the bolt up to the barrel but inside is a nightmare if you do this, and there is absolutely no need to remove the bolts. All you need to do is loosen them up enough to unlatch the strap and the towers come off easily.
