  • “The days of the big break are over.” Author of the best-selling book, How To Make It in the New Music Business and independent musician who Forbes calls "The Poster Child of DIY Music," Ari Herstand discusses what it takes to make it in the New Music Business. Ari will reveal the staggering disconnect between musician and blogger and how to tell your story, why no one seems to care about your music (and how to change that), how to get included in Spotify playlists, how to organize your time so you have the most effective workflow to manage your business and your art and how to make more money with a music career. Ari shares his real world experience navigating the new music business as a working DIY musician and explains why you need more than just talent to succeed in today’s biz.

I love this presentation! So insightful and Ari manages to cover a lot of topics in an hour. I liked that you also think the "how" is more important than "what", but I think the most important is "why".

Love the topics and thought. It's so interesting to me that when you played the music example, how much bloggers would think so differently from us as musicians or regular listeners. Also, when you mentioned we should ignore the haters, move forward with the people who love us, and they're who we want to invest our time and energy. What a life lesson.

    Vibe boards are genius!
Explaining the difference between what musicians hear and what bloggers (everyone else) hear is incredibly important. I've tried to explain that to my musician friends so many times. I'll be using this video as a reference for numerous reasons from now on. Great stuff Ari!

Terrific! You covered many topics in an informal and informative way. I enjoyed it and want to listen to this a few more times. I'm the videographer for John Francis Mariano and we needed to hear all of this. Thank you for giving such entertaining and helpful guides to a complicated and frustrating business. I definitely will listen to more of your videos and other things you offer. Glad to be on your mailing list.

Great presentation! Always an information goldmine for aspiring artists and music business professionals. The failure rate of big label bands always amazes me. More reason to help each other and make it ourselves!

I really like what you said about setting goals - it's all the in HOW not just in the WHAT. I feel like I understood the process of reverse-engineering a goal, but you took it 1-step further and clarified it for me!
