    Today's guest is the CEO and co-founder of Audiosocket, Jenn Miller. Audiosocket is a sync licensing company. They have an agency side, ASX, and a micro licensing section, which we get all into the nitty gritty and depths of what that actually means. They're the inventors of MASS: Music As a Service, which deals with the micro licenses that we talk about. They invented the platform. So if you need a song for a wedding, mom and pop local shop, ad for your TH-cam, then you can use Audiosocket for that at very affordable rates.
    We talk about what it's like running a sync agency and the kinds of briefs Jenn is seeing these days, the price ranges, and what Audiosocket is doing specifically. She also gives great advice on how to be successful in sync licensing.
    Quick links:
    3:50 - Background on Audiosocket and what they do
    7:07 - What is ASX? What is micro licensing and how does it work?
    9:23 - How do you clear a micro license?
    14:06 - How does an artist make money on a company licensing an entire catalog for $500/year subscription?
    19:27 - Leaving the retitling era and how exclusive/non-exclusive tracks work
    23:33 - How does Audiosocket ensure that artists in their catalog are not devalued?
    25:51 - Does Audiosocket have artists that do micro licensing and in ASX?
    27:27 - About the placements Audiosocket has placed
    29:27 - How do deals with composers work?
    30:20 - Jenn's tips to artists for getting more sync placements
    35:14 - Should artists spend time building relationships with music supervisors or work with a sync agent/agency?
    39:18 - How Audiosocket negotiates credits for artists
    41:11 - Ari's Take Academy student questions
    51:58 - How to get your music into Audiosocket's catalog

    We are part of the roster of Audiosocket (as a band). All we can say is that they do care about their artists!
    Our rep. Vanessa is always available for any questions and doubts, and the feeling we got is of a really human and warm company, compared to others we've been working with.
    Thanks Vanessa, Jenn and Audiosocket!

    Audio Socket takes 75% unless you’re exclusive with them. Then it’s 50/50 industry standard BUT if you’re exclusive then they’re gonna take 50% of your writers royalty. Geeezus!

    Extremely helpful video! I've been a music-only songwriter for over 10 years but what I write is very "band sounding". I've often been told over the years to look into sync placement but I didn't know anything about it, what they even look for someone like me, etc.

    Question everyone, my engineer is very busy and always encourages me to get my sessions over stems and also asks me if im more interested in wet stems over dry stems. Can anyone give thoughts on this? He says any other engineer can help me get my stems from my sessions. I am just not very informed on stems and until Jenn mentions it for 'Audio Shake" didn't realize exactly how important they can be.

    • @FloFactionTV
      @FloFactionTV 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      He means just the raw sound files. He is right, any studio you go to should be able and willing to give you your session or atleast the raw files so in case you need to work somewhere else or send them off.. you have them and dont need to chase other people for YOUR vocals…

    • @neutronjockey
      @neutronjockey 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      They have two catalogs: ASX which is exclusive to ASX meaning you (artist) has only listed your music with Audiosocket. Their non exclusive catalog is for artists wanting to list their music with multiple libraries.
      This is the trade-off: if you choose to list non-exclusively - your music is placed with more libraries/agents, *possibly* resulting in more exposure for smaller sync rights licensing deals. A listing non-exclusively at Audiosocket which has a sync license placement results in a 25% agent commission - you receive 75% of fees.
      Exclusively submitting to Audiosocket - means you can’t submit your works to another library. Trade off: larger companies with bigger budgets more willing to work with exclusive libraries (no chance another company will buy sync rights for the same song for a different ad campaign or tv show etc). Artists music is more likely to be considered for bigger budget projects - split is 50/50 with agent/artist.
      You can submit to Audiosocket either way - you have to weight the pros and cons.

    At @ the 37:10 mark you mention that a co-writers publishing deal could ruin a sync license. If I own 100% of the master rights, do the composition splits or publishing deals of co-writers matter at that point? Thanks.

    • @ArisTake
      @ArisTake  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes it matters. For a sync license the law requires clearance of the publishing (all co-writers) and the master.

    She mentioned about the STEMs company. I just used DeMix to pull 3,000 stems over the last year for a library. I wonder how good their AI is. Yes, composers don't like doing this on many levels (bouncing stems), really it takes the mystique out of the process and then people can dissect everything so much and mess with the creatives ideas. The AI also learns how to pull the stems and also how to compose, produce. The stems concept is useful for mixing but AI needs to leave the music industry for the musical side of things. They don't pay musicians but they dump all this money into AI to make music, so then you just pay the AI toll. Anyway I'll be sniffing around that tech to see how it compares to DeMix for audio source separation. Unfortunately the way tech works is a cool product comes down the pipeline, millions buy it, then the product eventually eats the industry all for itself and siphons the contractors market share. That's no fun.

    • @willmcmillan1430
      @willmcmillan1430 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It can be kind of discouraging to see - in industry after industry - people creating AI which puts other people out of business or out of a job. And it's odd - since music is so often an expression of an individual's thoughts/feelings/life experience/soul - to think that there are folks attempting to make original music using AI...
