You are great. Common sense approach to fix GM engineering cheap laziness. I'll bet that one of the GM engineers wanted an access panel but a 'bean counter' said no! People that are not willing to make their own access panel are forced to lift or even remove the bed. Now, whenever you need to work on the pump it is in easy access.

Acess hatch is smart. People get all upset over cutting it, but it's not a problem if done well. The hatch will come in handy because putting those cheapo no-name pumps in guarantees you'll get more practice changing them out.
Edwin..thanks for the kind words...My fuel gauge went out first...then my fuel pump...fuel filter was plugged up ...so pump was working very hard and wore itself out.....soooooo change the fuel filter..mounted on frane near gas tank...then if you think the fuel gauge pick up on the pump is bad...change the fuel pump out...

Also I just learned the fuel regulator on back side of fuel rail can cause all kinds of problems also... But main thing hook up fuel pressure gauge. When you smash the gas pedal all the way to the floor, fuel pressure should stay rock steady at full pressure....
Well lots of people say I was crazy i used a cut off wheel in 4" grinder.. But I had the top of the tank packed with soaking wet 1 inch layer of towels. I now think removing the truck bed is safer to do. only 4 bolts. One guy told me he just lifted one side of truck bed up.. idk
Just put a new box on my truck, wish I'd cut a hole in it while it was off, I put it on with quick release hardware though so it will come back off no problem.
@Kelvin_5522 there is a screen in the pump ..But i had a clogged fuel filter in the gas line along frame of the truck.. trace down the gas line from gas tank..
My gas gauge us all over the place. Truck runs fine. Gotta be the sending unit (float). Thinking of cutting the bed rather than trying to free up rusted bed bolts
I lifted the bed from the driver's side the first time. Now five months later the AC Delco pump I bought on Ebay and installed in the module has failed. I'm cutting an access this time (though not quite as large as the one in this video). It WILL make access easier, and the easier the access is, the less likely the pump is to fail. It's a Murphy's law thing and I've been screwed by Murphy's law way too many times to deny that Murphy's law is real.
Joseph Summers Yep real pain when pump fails...My pump failed because filter was 95 % plugged..pump was pumping into clogged fuel filter..I think this was very hard on the pump...So I change the filter any time I change pump..Also I check fuel pressure at fuel rail...I put down deposit at parts store and use pressure tester for free...with guage hooked up..mash gas peddle to the floor for a few seconds..fuel pressure should stay rock steady...
Thanks, but I own a gauge and I know the pump isn't working. It might just be the connector (because I didn't change it), but I seldom get so lucky. We changed the filter the first time because the old one was almost clogged, but the one we replaced it with should still be good now. The pump worked once when I jumped the relay and banged on the bottom of the tank, but that was it. We had to tow the truck from a Wah Wah station after it stranded the owner there and now I have to get up and drive him to work every morning at 5:00 AM until I get the pump working again. Screw lifting the bed just to change that stupid pump. It's a real bitch reaching in from the side in such a limited amount of space and I'm done with that. I cut a top access in my 87' Camaro years ago because the whole rear axle has to come out to pull the fuel tank. My motto has always been: "Work smart not hard." Thanks for the video.
I used a CAN OPENER on my car. Take a look below- OK guys everyone jokes about the TIN CAN they drive,RIGHT! I just used the can opener to make the hole It worked like a charm. It was the one that you stab into the can. No mess cut like good cheese with a regular knife. Only spent $20.00 bucks on a pump. @
@@ryan1usu yep I use the household can opener the type of stab in and go around a number 10 can or smaller. If you look at my videos You'll see the can opener. It took less than a couple hours. With all the taking the seats out. And cleaning of the top of the gas tank. And the repair of the opening. With tabs of sheet metal and pop rivets

You'll definitely be replacing that pump within a year. I just went through the same thing. I cheaped out and got some China crap and I got stranded because of my damn fuel pump. So now I have to deal with that again. I should have just put an ACDelco part back in the truck. I'm an idiot. Because of that, I would not advise putting a china $80 fuel pump in your truck. You'll be replacing it every year when the $380 whatever part would last 20 years
Ive had cheap 40$ no name china pumps from ebay in 2 silverados I own and have never had a problem yet for 6 and 7 years. At least the cheap ones are plastic and don’t rot out like the OEM ones. I can’t believe how clean the top of his gas tank looked above the fuel pump. Besides you are wasting money on AC Delco when it comes to electronics because Delphi is cheaper and they are actually the ones who make the pump and most electronics for GM.

Don't destroy your bed. Take the 4 bolts out of it on the driver side and loosen the 4 on the passenger side. Unplug the light harness and detach the filler flange from the fender. Pop the tailgate off to lighten it up and tilt the bed up and prop it up with a jack stand.

I usually wedge a piece of sheet metal between bed and pump since i used up all my sisters panties on the last job didnt have no rags valable

Did you change the fuel filter? Most times it is a plugged fuel filter that causes a fuel pump to quit.
Yes the filter was plugged solid. Thats what caused the pump to fail...

This s really is an easy repair by cutting an access hatch. My only issue as of now is removing the ring as it's rusted solid.
