I strongly remember this advertisement. It was created for Gulf Oil’s sponsorship of the NBC coverage of the July 1969 Apollo moon landing, and was shown probably hourly throughout, mixed out with a very limited number of other Gulf ads. It was very fitting: Mankind was fulfilling the age-old dream of going to the moon, and here is largest ship ever built, all while nodding to mankind’s seafaring history, and recognizing how far we have come. I see the moon landings as the philosophical high point of all civilization. We were celebrating our technical achievements as unified Americans gathered together from diverse cultures, but now with the same goals, in a new American culture of freedom. We had eliminated slavery, grown beyond racism, and were marching as one to the stars. In retrospect, it seems an enormous blown opportunity for all of humankind. It is important to note that the oil terminal at Bantry Bay was destroyed in the “Betelgeuse Incident” of 1979, and was never reopened. Yes, the rise of digital tech, the internet, and mobile tech since 1969 has been magnificent - but it is inward-looking, and oddly divisive. We need a frontier that gives an existential challenge. Then all our effete sensibilities will seem like silliness.

      Frank?
I seem to have a knack for finding stuff like what you're trying to find regarding "Big Brutus" the Shovel...
I'm 61, and was about 7 when this Gulf Oil And aired and was living in Suburban Los Angeles... So Naturally, being so Close to the Port of Los Angeles this Commercial is very easy to Recall.
If You can tell me a Little about the Ad You saw with "Big Brutus" I might be able to help.
Here's some things to help get the Ball Rolling:
      1) Can You first remember the Age You Were and add that to the Year You were Born?
      2) Let me know what Region of the Country You were living in.
      3) See if You can Remember what Television Program You Associate with the Commercial (Bear in Mind that I can Recall Documentaries on Things like "Big Brutus" on Programs like "60 Minutes"and Sunday Morning with Charles Kuralt on CBS and "Documercials" from Enco and Exxon on NBC's Weekend Evening News Broadcasts...
See what You come up with and get back with me here and maybe We can Dig up some Dirt on "Big Brutus" Together, okay?

I don't think it was as "woke" as you describe. Although Dr. Werner von Braun was celebrated as the "father" of the Saturn Five rocket (Saturn V), most people who knew history knew that this was the successor to the same V2 rocket that hit London in 1944--and it was the same Dr. von Braun! The adults of then were not all acknowledging each other's heritages and "Celebrating our Diversity!!!" They were hoping that the rocket worked, and the men (yes, exclusively, MEN---and no one protested!) got to the moon and back home, alive, as Kennedy had committed. Clear debate on when fossil fuels should have been more tightly regulated to avoid what we're seeing now. Gulf Oil was a weaker company compared to the Standard Oil "Seven Sisters", like Esso. They needed the ad visibility to compete.

      I never made it professionally.
... people STILL think I'm NUTS, but I don't care... they just take all Merchant Mariners for granted and then wonder why our Country is still so dependant on the rest of the World...
... even if we still made Stuff here, if We can't deliver it to their Ports, the rest of the World quickly forgets under who's Flag the Stuff was built or Grown.

Oh yes I remember this commercial. And like others who have posted already, I associate it with NBC's coverage of the Apollo lunar landings in 1969. I was nine years old. What memories!
Short story: In 1966, amid threats of the closure of the Suez Canal, Gulf Oil built a fleet of Ultra Large Crude Carrier tankers to move oil from the Middle East around Cape Hope of Africa and north to European ports. The tankers were too large to dock at existing ports, so in 1968 Gulf built a new storage tank farm on Whiddy Island in Bantry Bay in southern Ireland. The facility included an off-shore jetty where the tankers - with the aid of tug boats - docked to offload their oil. This commercial is about that facility and the tankers which docked there. It is sung by the Clancy Brothers to the tune of "The Gallant Forty TWA."
With the canal closed (June, 1967) the operation was very successful, until the canal reopened in 1975, enabling smaller vessels to move the oil more quickly and at far less cost. Though it was no longer very profitable, Gulf kept the using the facility......until the fateful morning of January 8, 1979.
At about 1:00 that morning, an aging French tanker, the Betelgeuse (beetle juice), was offloading oil when it caught fire, exploded and burned in massive fireball. In what came to be known as the Whiddy Island Disaster, 42 crew members and eight Gulf employees were killed, and a sizable portion of the jetty was destroyed. The salvage and clean-up took nearly two years to complete. Gulf never used the facility again. Instead they turned it over to the Irish government, which to this day uses it as a strategic oil reserve. The tank farm and what's left of the jetty are clearly visible on Google's satellite images.

A great commercial, showing just how much TV advertising has declined. But this was being shown some 25 years before the Exxon Valdez oil spill. And it didn't get much coverage in the US, but 10 years before a tanker off loading at terminal in Bantry Bay (seen in the final shot) caught fire and exploded. Fifty people were killed and a major oil spill resulted. This commercial was also before major concern about global warming. As graceful as a swan she goes; we sail her at our ease.
From Arabie around Cape Hope we proudly make our way,
To keep all Europe movin' from our base at Bantry Bay!
    (Refrain)
    Verse 3:
They're building other tankers now to speed more oil to you,
The Universe Kuwait, me lads; Japan and Portugal, too.
Also the Universe Ireland, I'm very proud to say,
Is among the giant ships a-bringin' oil to Bantry Bay!
    (Refrain)

So much Superior to Mike Lindell's "My Pillow" 3-minute TV rants about pillows, sheets, and what next? I recall Gulftane, Good Gulf, and high in Tetraethyl lead-rich "No Nox" as Gulf's menu of gasoline options. Now onto Wreck of the Edmund Fitgerald.

Chris, I spent my early childhood (1962-1971) in the Los Angeles area, Dad kept our boat down in the Harbor...all before catalytic converters and Unleaded Gas. Some days you could try to cut the air with a knife... but if you didn't stop to sharpen it a couple times, it was hopeless to even try...
