Gulf sponsored NBC's space coverage, of which I probably saw almost every minute. This tune has been drilled into my head since I was 8 or 9 years old and I have occasionally caught myself humming it. When I saw this video I was amazed that after nearly 50 years I had the tune and most of the words right--a tribute to how the songwriters for crafting a catchy composition. It makes me miss Frank McGee.

      H. Me too. we were all " space kids " and quite happy to be such children. H, who says " you can't go home again " ? You actually can. You're just a lot bigger and don't fit in the same clothing or spaces. But it can be done.

I was young at the time but this song has been in my head ever since. Probably my introduction to Irish music. BTW, this is the Clancy Brothers.

Actually, the commercial song goes back even further.
I remember it from the mid-Sixties, when Gulf sponsored the TV coverage of the Gemini Space program!

I saw this commercial in 1967. The commercial has stuck in my head since then. It sounds like a old Irish love song.

I can't listen to this commercial without tapping my foot on the floor, slapping my knee and yelling "HEY!" repeatedly. It really gets into my soul! I was in my late teens when I first heard it during coverage of our missions of space exploration. I'm of German ancestry but some hardy Irishman must've gotten into my pedigree sometime. :- )

I remember watching this commercial on t.v. during the Apollo 11 moon landing. I have loved this song ever since.

So have I. Glad you enjoyed this re-interpretation of the classic Gulf commercial, and I hope you check out the original commercial that user WookieCookie has posted.

We'll resume NBC News live coverage of (name of mission) after this message from Gulf.........
    ..(this commercial)..........
Frank McGee, back here at Cape Kennedy, where we are at T-Minus 13 minutes, 24 seconds and counting prior to the launch of (name of mission). Back at the NBC News Space Center in New York, David Brinkley and John Chancellor have a feature about how to take photos off your TV screen of this morning's launch,. David, John?.........

A wonderful and most catchy song! (I still prefer the "Gulf Oil Theme" created for NBC's special reports sponsored by Gulf in the 60s, though.)

Not only space flights, but Gulf sponsored the political conventions on NBC.

Not Gemini. The Bantry Bay facility mentioned in the song was finished in 1969. Must be Apollo you're thinking about.

You know, this isn't the original commercial but I sort of like it better than the original. The real commercial was basically overhead shots of static ships while this one has some action and movement to it. Thanks for posting it.

Irish. They gotta be on a ship, drinking, or fighting. Sometimes all three. Yeah, I'm Irish, as well as English, dane, French, Spanish, Creek and Choctaw. Mostly Irish though.

I am a little late to this thread, but I don't think this commercial showed before 1970. I remember it being around 1971, as part of Apollo coverage on TV, and maybe from the conventions in 1972. The place spoken of, Bantry Bay, became the site of a major oil explosion in early 1979 involving dozens of deaths, which is why Bantry Bay is not known as a huge oil terminus for Europe. This is a classic 20th century ad celebrating fossil fuels, which seems very dated now.

The same fossil fuels that helped build the world as we know it now not as the backward poverty stricken disease ridden nightmare it was 130years ago

This ad was run during the first Moon landings in 1969-70. I recorded the moon missions on a reel to reel audio tape recorder and this ad was on it.

Fred : No way. We had this on every Apollo mission in the 60's. I still remember us kids all around the TV singing along. The lunar walk in the Apollo 11 happened when I was quite young, but i bet every human being on this planet over age 60 with a TV set can tell you exactly where they were when the men walked on the moon the very first time.

It is the original. Fortunately I was able to save it from the original user WookieCookie. I reposted it when her account was terminated, since the commercial is too good not to be shown.

pbatommy I want to thank you for posting it. it's been rolling around in my head for 40+ years and all of my efforts to locate it had been unsuccessful. Hell i even wrote to the Museum of Television History, with no success. One more thing I can remove from my bucket list. :)
