- A rare full makeup tutorial from 1969 narrated by makeup consultant Marla Craig. The model is Rena Alden. Though made in the late 1960's, the principles followed in this relaxing #makeuptutorial video still apply to this day. Many viewers also report that old #ASMR vibe too.

My mom, who was born in 1939, taught me all these tricks. But she said never wear brown eyeliner, always black. And her eyeliner was in a cake form where you wet the brush and swirled it in the eyeliner cake. And she always wore Max Factor or Ultima 2. And she used a powder that had cornstarch in it and I think they still make it. I told her her skin smelled like taco shells 😂
i say they opposite - black eyeliner makes your features look harsher than they are, so brown eyeliner is a more natural choice
@@Verbsdescribeus yes, I prefer brown eyeliner too - it generally comes down to personal preference and the kind of look you’re going for I guess (eg. mod 60s looks seemed to have heavier-looking dark eyeliner whereas the golden era of Hollywood 30s looks seemed to have more of the softest eyeliner in order to put more emphasis on very long lashes) but I like to follow the old tricks of Marilyn Monroe’s makeup artist and in fact he actually used brown eyeliner on her for the signature look she had throughout most of the 50s, until the last 2 years of her life which were the 60s so her makeup changed with the evolving style of the time and therefore looked to be black thicker eyeliner than she used to wear - but it irritates me to no end when everyone these days doing the ‘iconic’ Marilyn look swears that the must-have is sharp black winged eyeliner, the inaccuracy, if only they researched and knew 😩😂
Also I love that your mum had one of those cake eyeliners, that’s so cool 😍 I bet she was one of the lucky ones who could pull off black eyeliner so well and that’s probably why she wore it ✨ and yes Max Factor was so much more popular back in the day, my grandma and mum used to love it, nowadays I rarely hear of it anymore and never see ads for it alongside other brands like L’Oréal, Maybelline, MAC, etc. ☹️ It was such a top tier brand!
I still do my eyeliner like that. My mom was born in 1954 😊

Eh, I think it's an aesthetic thing? Lmao times have certainly changed since 1969, plus makeup is an art form, so really, there's no "wrong" way to do it (even if some things are more flattering than others). Plus the drunk blush is inspired by a Japanese trope, and this video is clearly western.

Who thought that such a technique as CONTOURING would be found in a 60's makeup tutorial video!!
I mean they been painting a full faces for along time before
Contouring was done long before the 60s, just like many other "new" techniques these days. The contouring technique was first used on theatre actors.

Playing with color has always been popular with young girls. Makeup is not needed as much for young faces as long as the skin is clear. We tend to focus more on a natural look as we get older.

i learnt something ! i was a 70's child and my mother never taught me a good way like this .her ideal was blue trashy eyeshadow and dark eyebrows lol
They teach optical illusions, how to apply makeup in different ways to different kinds of face features in order to achieve the desired look. 90% of the makeup tutorials on TH-cam doesn't do this, because almost everyone is a self proclaimed makeup artist who only really knows how to apply makeup to their own face.

I love the elegant femininity of the women of that time. Growing up around the older women in my family was just wonderful. Their character and way of being is irreplaceable. Them and the glamour they brought from their era felt like home. So warm and womanly. ☺️🥰
A generation sadly gone & respected .
Aren't they so beautiful? My grandmother is from thos era and used to keep her fingernails long and would paint them rose or red. I remember she never left the house without her Blush and lipstick on. Literally my inspiration for being Feminine
I liked how she still looked like herself after the makeup. Also liked how the narrator added in some advice to be healthy lol
Denise I agree, the whole point of makeup is to look natural and flawless.
Denise that was actually because men didn't like makeup and before they could divorce a woman if she used cosmetics to look different (i read it but im not so sure about it) however the makeup toda y represents also the change in women and how much more independant we are now, to the point that we can use makeup as much as we want without feeling like liars
Denise And that’s because, young lady, as the narrator said at the very beginning of the video, “take advantage of what’s there. Accentuate the good points, minimize the others”

So crazy most beauty gurus here on TH-cam like to say stuff like "there's no contouring back in the day" "nobody used to highlight" yet there's shit like this proving them wrong. I love this!
True, but most beauty gurus grew up in the 90s/2000s. Whilst professional makeup artists used highlight and contour, it wasn't really popular amongst the general public during that period.
Amanda Gail i know right😊
contouring was all the rage in the 60s. I grew up in the 90s but even I know that. But it fell out of favor with the general public for a few decades and is now a mainstream makeup technique. Almost everybody does it for their daily makeup but when I was growing up girls didn't really do that
I've literally never heard anyone say that. Everyone knows contouring, highlighting, over lining, and all the other popular things we do today started a looooong time ago.
Same, I was shocked that they said the word contouring. I think our (millennials) parents were all about "blush" and "rouge" in the 80s UK but failed to inform us it could be used for contouring and not just looking like you've been hit with a pole.

Even contouring and baking was a thing back then.
And brow hi light. Lol. Not much has changed.
+Stine Moldfjell It wasn't really "baking" back then. That's just how powder was applied since powder was a thing to use. Baking is when you put a ton of powder on a single small area to bring the area forward to the viewer, and in turn it looks unnatural, chalky, and grotesque. As you can see, it's applied and then brushed off without waiting much more than the time it takes to grab another puff. You always brush off excess powder when you powder your face. That's how it's applied.
fatalrob0t I know what baking is, but thank you for the explanation, I guess. I just reacted to they way she said that you leave the powder to allow it to set.
+Stine Moldfjell Isn't baking for cooking? Food?
+fatalrob0t You dust off the powder after baking as well.
This was actually really surprising to watch cuz I didn’t expect them to know this much about makeup and beauty.A lot of these facts and tips are still used

Beatrice Olivier agreed. It's your opinion. It's my opinion.Inb4 someone on their period gets triggered by an
"Opinion."
I personally prefer this because like you said,it's just to accentuate the features.Today's makeup,is BAM.5 lbs of makeup. With light makeup that accentuates features, the person is still recognizable. With the full face makeup, you have to look twice to realize,it's the same person. It just all looks the same on social media.Extreme contouring,Kylie Jenner lipkit, huge false lashes, dark eye makeup,"brows on fleek," etc. It's just...tiring to see girls with the same face :/ minus eye color/nose shape/lip shapes, etc
Why is this so satisfying? Like the music, the setting, the colors and vibe it’s all so visually pleasing. Just me?

It’s nice how the tutorial doesn’t mention any product brands, sponsors, names, etc. A simple makeup tutorial with health and hygiene tips and color/shade tips to suit individual tones. Much less condescending than today’s makeup tutorials.

Very asmr. The slow talking & the lady applying the makeup slowly too is doing it
Sooo simple💗
It's surprising how little has changed in technique.
Except for in today's world people cake the makeup on so thick you could scrape it off with a razor blade.
I do my makeup more like this, simple, with emphasis in on my good points. I don’t like the new way of doing makeup. The funny thing is people think I wear a lot but I don’t, I’m just good at knowing what to do where.

I notice how in this video, compared to modern tutorials, the artist explains that you must do this and can never do that. Nowadays there are virtually no rules to make up, and you can do whatever you want to whenever you want to. I just think that's so cool how makeup has become such a universal art form that you can pretty much look like anyone or anything you want!😊
That's probably also why I see people walking around quite literally looking like clowns, but hey...it's all about self-expression! Lol.
Well people get pretty offended these days..
