  • My favourite version of this great song.
Live on the Late Late Show from 1984. With Barney McKenna and John Sheahan playing the banjo and whistle from the audience.

My mother was a Kerry woman, born in 1926, who just passed today 12/1/21 at about 3pm. For the last few years as her health declined, this was one of the few songs that could make her sing and clap her hands. God bless the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem. They were the soundtrack of my youth, and long after they had all passed were still making people happy. I thank them for the joy they have brought to my mother, and to me.

My grandfather was from Kerry born in 1937. He loved this song. I learned how to play it for him and to see him light up and start singing is a memory I hold close. He passed barely a week before your mom.

When I was 19 at Pierce College in the SFV I got the nerve to ask out a girl in my American history class. She was pretty as all get out and I was sure I would never go out with me. Boy was I surprised when she said yes. So I got tickets for the Clancy Brothers who were performing at the Santa Monica Civic. I had all their records; she had never heard of them. But boy did she and I loved them and she put her head on my shoulders as they played this song. I'll never forget the moment as long as I live. We ended up dating for a few years and had a great time together and this was our theme song. I could play the guitar, she could play the piano and we always sang this song; it was our favorite. Kelly works as a cultural attache in a foreign land. It was a moment to remember and made life worth living thanks to the Clancy Brothers.

Who else recognized Barney McKenna, and John Sheahan from the legendary Dubliners joining with instruments from the crowd. Ronnie Drew is behind them singing along. Therefore, fortunately not all the men in this great video have passed away, as many have noted. John Sheahan (playing the tin whistle) is thankfully still with us, and if you follow his recent actions, is instructing musicians today how to sing the great old songs correctly and how not to. God Bless them all, both living and those who've gone home.

So many hearts your way. I was wishing I could go back to before they all past then I read your comment and the dam just burst. Warm hugs to you, I'm sure he's with the boys enjoying good music and story telling where the Irish red ale is ever flowing. O the summer time has come
And the trees are sweetly bloomin'
      And the wild mountain thyme
      Grows around the bloomin' heather
      Will ye go lassie go?
      And we'll all go together
      To pull wild mountain thyme
      All around the bloomin' heather
      Will ye go lassie go?
I will build my love a bower
      By a cool crystal fountain
And around it I will pile
All the wild flowers from the mountain
      Will ye go lassie go?
      And we'll all go together
      To pull wild mountain thyme
      All around the bloomin' heather
      Will ye go lassie go?
If my true love should not come
      Then I'll surely find another
To pull wild mountain mountain thyme
      All around the bloomin' heather
      Will ye go lassie go
      And we'll all go together
      To pull wild mountain thyme
      All around the bloomin' heather
      Will ye go lassie go?
      And we'll all go together
      To pull wild mountain thyme
      All around the bloomin' heather
      Will ye go lassie go?

A friend of mine was killed. She was hit by a car at 7:45 p.m on 31st December 2018 as she crossed the road. She suffered severe brain damage after hitting her head on a metal railing. She was barely sixteen, and she didn't live to see 2019.
This song was sung at her funeral, I was one of the music students who sang this. If it had been anyone else, she would also have been singing with us.
We will never forget you, Róisín. Rest In Peace.

Grew up with them, thanks to my dad. Went to see them in concert when I was VERY young; around 6. I remember how they filled the stage (& the room) with their presences. Paddy danced to Port Lairge ( unsure of spelling). They are all gone now, my parents included, but some 60 years down the road, this cold night has just gotten a little warmer with some wonderful memories.

this will sound weird but here it goes.........I'm a 12 year old girl.most of my friends watch pop/rap/dance. my friends think I also like them genres as I listen to them with NY friends . but when I go home u actually listen to Irish trad/folk songs and don't really like pop up. UP THE IRISH 👌

Dear Robyn: 'Tis in all Irish blood to sing from our hearts and to recognize the beauty of music that touches us. May you keep singing as long as you breathe. As I walk songs come to me from the land, the trees, and especially from the sea, lakes and rivers!

I sang Go Lassie Go Tonight at our local Adelaide folk club singers session - it was lovely with everyone joining in. It is not a past song - its is sung everywhere. I learnt it from my nana.

Thank you for the Music RIP
