I have no hoarding tendencies. But what I have learned is: just start tackling the things you have to do. My husband passed away 4 weeks before we had planned to move. Suddenly there is a mountain of things to handle alone. Just get started! Now everything has got its place and I sit on the couch and watch your videos. I am 80 yers old. Love your work!

Yess! What i esp like abt this channel is that they clean hoarder houses but they dont do the whole "oh no a hoarder!! Look everyone!!" *films people crying while throwing away their stuff* that a lot of other people do when offering these kinda services. They just seem like a normal person who is treating others in a normal way.

December is an incredibly hectic time for my family. In addition to preparing for Christmas, my husband and I celebrate 4 birthdays just within our immediate family. Extending out to nieces, nephews and in laws, over a dozen. Last night as I was cleaning up after a birthday party I found myself just sticking stuff in already full drawers and cabinets… ones that had previously been organized before my disability. Knowing how long it’s going to take me to declutter those areas now that I am limited in my ability to ambulate, I am putting it off for after Christmas.
But as I was stuffing a birthday banner in the office supplies drawer, I remembered something you said once… something along the lines of being able to see through the layers of chaos when the “break” happened. There was a point at the bottom of the heaps where everything seemed normal… whereas everything on top just started to get piled on. That is my fear. One day you will discover the birthday banner on top of all of the neatly organized office supplies … underneath heaps of disorganized chaos and say “this… this was the moment.”
I don’t want my family to have to go through that… (or you to have to travel to Arizona to help them 😂) …after I am gone. So I just decided… today I am going to clean out that area. Tomorrow I will do another drawer/cabinet. The next day after that as well.
Thank you Mack. Thank you for all you have done this past year to help so many people. More than you may realize. ❤️

@andip.9808, what you have said is exactly what Mack has advised in his videos. Bite sized areas are the way to start. Do one small area, a drawer, a cupboard. Take it all out, look at the state of the items, what it means, clean the space, organize and replace what you’ve decided to keep. Give yourself a Pat on the back for getting started. When it’s done, I’ve found my head feels lighter. My eyesight feels clearer. Like someone cleaned the mirror, or my glasses. I breath easier. Keep going forward. Happy new years to everyone.

my opinion on the whole "after these houses get cleaned they'll often go back to that shape anyways" is that, even if they DO go back to that cluttered and dirty, you Still gave them however many weeks of a less cluttered home, you Still gave them a healthier place to live, and you Still gave them one more chance than anyone else was gonna give them- i don't believe that this kindness is ever wasted- as someone who struggles rly hard to keep my home clutter free (not quite to the extent of these homes) and who's had to keep cleaning my shit-sty over and over, any help i get is a HUGE breath of fresh air, and every time i get a little better at keeping it under control- u really are an angel to these people even if the clean doesn't last

When our roommate moved out last year, we realized that 8 place settings was way too much for just 2 people in a small kitchen. We didn't get rid of any of it, bc it's one half of our really nice set of dishes we plan on keeping for a long time. But we took those extras and put them in the cabinet above the fridge we never access and it's made everything so much easier. Sometimes just getting things out of active circulation helps.

So you helped me so much with this video. I just cleaned out my cabinets after living in my home for 10years and a tornado coming through my kitchen ceiling. I have ADHD and OCD so this is hard. Anyhow, the roof is done but the ceiling is not and the cabinets, walls and floor were covered in insulation, dirt, and stained from muddy rain. Florida weather! I decided to get rid of spices and food. I argued about the dates on the food and spices still being viable but you just helped me with why I have to get rid of the spices...even if the container was never opened and still sealed, lol. It is the hardest thing for me to go through and I am working on changing this. Your videos help me get through this issue and help me know I can change and be nice about it, plus I can take my time in smaller spaces (using a 6ft portable table). I appreciate what you give to everyone and wish you lived close enough to help me do the rest. Thanks and God bless!

I love using your videos as the soundtrack while doing my makeup because it lets me truly focus on what you're saying without getting distracted by the cleaning. Don’t get me wrong, watching the makeover is SO satisfying, but sometimes I just want to absorb the message. In this particular video, what stood out to me most was how kind, empathetic, and knowledgeable you are about mental illness and neurodivergence. It’s so refreshing to hear someone speak about these topics in such a humanizing way-thank you for that!
Also, I absolutely love the idea of tackling big problems one "small kitchen table" at a time. I’m definitely going to apply this mindset to the intangible clutter I’ve been collecting in my mind recently (anxiety, appointments, responsibilities, etc.).
By the way, someone else mentioned that the reason you have so many followers is because you're just such a cool person, and I couldn't agree more! I keep coming back for your wholesome sense of humor (it’s the moose/wolf jokes that get me every time) and your soothing voice.
    Cheers from Brazil! 😊

It was kind of interesting, most of the time when I watch these I feel inspired to clean, but when I was watching the kitchen clean up (with all the spices) I actually felt super stressed and overwhelmed, as if it was my kitchen. There was this element of feeling myself shutting down when I looked at it. I don't have hoarding disorder but I do have this "don't be wasteful" thing I was brought up with, so I could definitely emotionally connect with the reason the kitchen got cluttered. This year I have been watching Dana K. Whites decluttering videos and realized that while I'm a very organized clutterbug, it's still clutter if it takes away space or peace. I'm an artist and a teacher so you can imagine the things I accumulate.

if you're going to be permanently living in a house, one of the tricks you can do for the object permanence issue is to just take all the doors off of the cabinets, so you can see everything in there without losing out on the space.

One of things I love about your channel, Mack, is seeing those midwestern idiosyncrasies. I grew up in the Midwest and I miss it a lot. 😢 things like sitting in the garage, the sarcasm and looking fun at those we love. People here. Where I live now, often don't get sarcasm and would think that referring to your child as "filth" was criminal. I could watch you all day ( and sometimes I do)! The nostalgia warms my heart. ❤

Ruh-roh. I have a plastic box of seashells and I've just managed to cull a bunch of old meds out of my med drawer, from like 20years ago, some of which aren't even mine, they're my ex's crap. BUT! No George Forman grill. (Also boxes of papers from teaching, as in, "this could be useful if I teach this subject again," knowing everything I really need is in my head, I can walk into a classroom and pull a lesson plan out of my... ear... let's say ear.) But yeah, getting rid of stuff is hard, not because I have any particular sentimental attachment (but some), but because I feel "responsible" - throwing it in the rubbish where it'll end up in a landfill that just makes the entire planet worse is a real barrier. Regift, reuse, recycle, I try to do that as much as I can, but it's still difficult. I'm not quite at hoarder level, but definitely have that "but this is a GOOD cardboard box" syndrome...

I really appreciate your compassion. I struggle with hoarding-and although I am not as bad as I used to be-It’s still a struggle. I know now if my stuff starts piling up that’s a sign I’m not doing very well mentally and I need to reevaluate. It’s a vicious cycle because I buy things to make myself happy in the moment, but then I’m ultimately unhappy because I’m unable to do things like: have passengers in my car or even sit on my couch or at my kitchen table-and it can be very isolating socially-not just because I don’t want people to see the mess but there isn’t anywhere to sit or eat a meal! I know I am happy when my stuff is manageable and I try to hold fast to that fact. A happy life is more valuable to me than a pile of things. I have to remind myself I deserve a good life! I still have a lot of empathy for people deep in the trenches of hoarding disorder 😢

I was a borderline catastrophic hoarder up until a few years ago. Today, the tendencies are very much still there, but I am so terrified of this issue returning that I'm almost OCD about seeing things get left lying around, let alone retaining items I no longer need or use.
I still have a small journey to complete, and that is not having a 'junk' room. I'm at the stage where that room changes as I decide to clean and rearrange the junk room, creating an alternative junk room as the items I don't have space for need to go somewhere. But each time this happens, more unwanted stuff gets thrown out, making the 'stuff' pile smaller and the junk room less cluttered. I've just taken 4 weeks off work over Christmas to address the final collection of stuff, and to paint, plaster and refresh my home.
I'm really hoping that the new year brings a truly fresh start and a new way of living - that is, not in fear of people popping in unexpectedly!
Happy holidays to all, and Merry Christmas to those who celebrate it.

I once helped someone clean up their apartment which had a foot of stuff that we had to walk on as we cleaned up. Her rats had escaped from their cages so she had active rats nests under her bed and in her closet. I bought her new bed linens. I ruined an industrial vacuum. We threw out many bags of garbage and cleared the floor. She cleaned up her small kitchen. Her mother visited for the first time in months and made her get rid of the rats to which she had become allergic and her arms covered by scratches. Thank God.

Ooh wow you are sooooo right about living in piles when you have ADHD. When I clean I would stay practically the whole day cleaning but when I look I have garbage bag full of stuff but the house still look the same. & my husband would say I have adhd. He pointed it out that I would move a pile of clothes from one spot to another - I would also put pile things that are alike terms lol so it's like a messy organizer and I struggle with that. Some day I'm successful on cleaning, but for the most part I'm not. So he is right how he described it it actually me . Wow I didn't believe my husband when he use to tell me I had it .and on top of that I would hoard. My hoarding was for memories and projects that I would plan to use these things with lol. I'm recovering from it cause I do not want to live in clutter .. I like my things but not if it's going to cause an overwhelming clutter. I choose peace. Lol And these kind of videos has helped me . The after - is what my goals has been so it has helped me to keep my head chaos under control.

thank you for your video today. Spurred on by another declutterer, and your video, I cleaned out a whole bunch of glass jars I'm not using. I think some of us watching this channel appreciate the encouragement to go tackle a project ourselves. Thank you, so much, for helping those whom you did in this video. I also appreciate your comments about A.D.D. and A D.H.D. I have ADHD. One time, my grandmother and mother cleaned my room without my presence,or permission. I was angry about it for many years. It's best to involve someone with ADHD in the cleaning process so that they can help organize, and learn how to clean as well.

I've gotten halfway through cleaning up my apartment these past few weeks. I can now walk through the apartment and touch almost all of the walls without leaning except for two and access the bottom of the sinks. Once I get the piles of clothes figured out I've only got actual organizing of junk rather than finding out of the way places to shove everything.
