Alot of people hate this brand. I have had my fair share of problems with their battery tools. I am done with that platform from this brand.
But i have had zero issues with their gas stuff.
I have this exact saw. I put an 18 inch bar and chain on it. Didn't need to just wanted to.
I will say that it works great as a 16 or 18. Considering the 18 sold in stores is same cc's as the 16.
The chain that came on the tool is horrendous and should be changed immediately. It only has a cutting tooth every 6 inches or so. Most chains have a tooth every 3 or 4 inches.
But other than that i have had zero issues. I have owned it for 3 or 4 years and have cut about 4 cords of firewood and probably another 25-50 hours of storm clean up and pruning and such.
So not a pro saw by any means but certainly reliable for a suburban homeowner with a fireplace that they use every other night in the winter.
The only thing i do to all of my gas tools is to winterize them every year. I drain all but a half cup of gas out of the tank and add a 1/4 cup of seafoam. Let them run dry with this mixture in it and store away for winter. Fill up with gas in the spring and press the primer bulb several times and boom they start up again in 4 or five pulls

19.10.23 Thanks for your great review after owning it for two years. I have just recently purchased one for myself and am finding it to be a great little chainsaw, love it. Thanks again

I have used this Ryobi 16" 37cc saw for my limbing and small cuts (super lightweight, and a good inexpensive little saw for little projects) for over 5 years. Of course, I upgraded this Ryobi to an Oregon bar and chain to make it work well. But I digress. I never expected that this saw would become a staple on my dads property. I did not expect that it would be a little workhorse that would show up every day to limb, chop, and make short work of new growth. I am on my 3rd chain, and (as I explained, go OREGON bars!) my 2nd bar. Learn how to keep your chain sharp, so you are not buying a new chain when what you have just needs a little honing (imagine everyone throwing away their pocket knives, instead of sharpening them correctly).
Whatever saw you choose to take home, just remember the mantra of wise men everywhere.
'She is a fickle bitch. You have to learn just what she wants. Just what she needs, even if she will never articulate that fact to you. Use your Zen power, and figure out what she needs to be happy and grind hard. She will never tell you, so you had better figure that out for yourself. If you can unlock that mystery, she will stay by your side forever, and never let you down'.

Thank you for the long term review. I have been looking for a reliable cheapo for occasional household use and can’t justify a high end one unless that was my only option. I also like the case option. I will buy one tomorrow. Seems like it is still a great value given how it has performed for you. I imagine my use would be the same.
Do you use the canned pre mix 50:1 or do something different? I assume the bar oil eventually leaks out, do you do anything special when you put it away for a while, like drain the fluids? Thanks again.

Patrick, I have been satisfied with this saw for its intended purpose. The case is handy for storage and keeps stuff in one place so I am not looking all over. I mix my gas and oil. I put a couple paper towels in the bottom of the case to catch what little oil seeps after use.

I just bought a new RY3716. Question. Outside of sharpening the chain, you mention nothing about any maintenance program, internal cleaning, etc. I have now two Ryobi chainsaws and both are used daily for my firewood business. Yes I push them both hard. They both get thorough inside/outside maintenance after every use. Zero complaints.

I'm back reviewing a bunch of saw videos. Our dock building business bought two of the 14's and the 16's. We popped the engines open to find that they are Honda engines! This Ryobi is actually a patent buyover from The Walmart : Blackmax
Both saws run a Honda engine with the same chain, so yes, you can walk right into Walmart and grab that Tri-Link 2-chain pack and throw them right on here visa-versa. That's a job site package all in all, quick! No waiting on you or a dealer to fix stuff! Experience wise: clean the wood. These chains suck if you hit a nail. They are toast in half a second of hitting any nail. Just put the saw down and re-sharpen it for 5 minutes but trust us, it's dull if you had the accident. When it came to trees instead of dock cribs, I had no problem felling a 12", never bogged down on torque. Be religious in fuel ratio because this carb will gunk If you aren't paying attention after two tanks. Overall: a workhorse that cuts 2 seconds slower on average but runs a 3/8 chain/a saw that comes with a box, and a supportive warranty backed by the non-credible HD walk-in-walk out process: yeah this is a steal if you are a handyman. Tru-Green uses these for cutting sod btw.

The ryobi , black&decker, homelite and Walmart black max saws are the same. But Walmart regularly have big sales. Can get the black max 16 & 18" 38cc $60-$80, 20" 50cc $75 to $130 when on sales, plus 3yr warranty included.
    I got 20" 50cc on super sale for only $75 .

That's a really good deal, like any engine keep fuel in em and keep em lubed and they'll do the job.. only thing I did was changed put the chain.
With and "saw" they always say doesn't matter if it's a cheap or expensive saw ALWAYS put a good blade/chain on it and it'll make all the difference. I use Diablo brand for my circular/recip saws etc.. gotta Oregon brand chain for my Ryobi and shes happy

There decent with a bit of fiddling, fine out of the box for anything home related but I got me in a pinch bucking 20 plus trees and it didn't last long. With some exhaust mods and a rag instead of that foam filter it wakes up a lot and cuts good until the oiler starts clogging.

Ryobi own hypertough and black max? All 3 saws are identical just different colors and stickers

I dont have a lot of experience with 2 stroke engines but what I do know is my 37cc ryobi saw starts almost instantly, I have a cheap hypertough gas string trimmer that starts almost as fast and in last place I got a Bolens trimmer on clearance at my work (Lowes) and it's a real bitch to start.. you have to crank it a few times on setting one, then squeeze handle and pull the rope 5-10x on setting 2 until it pops off and once it does you select setting 3 and good to go.
My cheap hypertough says pull out the choke. Once it sputters push choke in and its ready.. i dont know if the walmart trimmer has a centrifugal clutch or what but the Bolen is a direct drive so each pull of the cord spins the blade.. i cant bitch because as a Lowes employee i got it for $12 since it was clearanced for $47 + 75% off.. it runs well once it's started and warmed up but I can see why it didn't sell well and probably got a lot of returns from users.
Gotta give props to that Wally world hypertough cuz she starts easy and will eat the shit you throw at her, i designated that with a brush cutter blade because I dont mind if it fails me but she's a banger ..
Anyways i inow this is a ryobi review BUT I'm saying if your choice is a gas hypertough tool i wouldn't be worried. The price is right and ive pushed mine beyond what they're supposed to do and she keeps on running
