  • Home Depot and their Ryobi chainsaw...it's a pretty good inexpensive saw, but far from great. If you understand what it's capable of and designed for, it's a good buy.

    I got the same saw with a 14" bar. I would recommend it as a backup to a larger heavy saw. I got a 50cc for large trees and this small saw is great for trimming, climbing, and limbing. It is nice to put down the heavy saw when cutting all day.

    I bumped it up to the 16 inch model, for not much more. The engine is the same displacement, but configured a little different, also a hard case was included. I just needed a saw for light stuff around the house, maybe an occasional small tree. I have an larger saw from another manufacturer and needed new fuel lines. I didn't feel like tinkering that day, so I picked up the Ryobi. I considered a Husqvarna or Stihl, but the extra cost would just be wasted for my needs.

    Hmm. I just bought a Ryobi 14" 40V Chainsaw. It's my first saw, but it cut down a 6.75" oak tree limb in a snap. No bogging and cut straight thru really smooth. It was actually fun to do! No smoke, fumes, and started instantly. Plenty of battery reserve cutting up medium and small limbs. Glad I didn't get gas.

      Exactly. Ive been using a ryobi 37cc 16 inch, and it is a fact that before you turn the saw sideways, you must rev it up, then turn sideways before contacting the wood. Actually even with a 60cc chainsaw, you must rev it up high before turning it sideways to cut. The tree shown in the video, i could have reved mine up high and went halfway through it, and let the chain cool down, then saw through the rest within about 10 minutes. The tree looked to be about 8 inches diameter

      Had to laugh at that one, you always start the chain before contacting the wood...you don't try and just power through it when the chain has stopped. That's like pressing the blade of a circular saw against a piece of wood and then turning it on. Inexperienced user was what that was.

    I have the ryobi battery powered pole saw and this chainsaw and have 2 acres to maintain.. I dont use chainsaws all the time but I have used sawzalls and bow saws for yrs cutting little stuff and some bigger stuff and I'd still rather have ANY chainsaw over a sawzall any day, i have been able to cut more wood and pretty big trees with this Ryobi chainsaw than what i've been able to in yrs.. Yeah there are better saws for cutting humongous trees but I've cut a few big trees with this saw and a TON of medium sized 10, 12 inch branches with this.. With no problem at all, do i use it everyday? No, but it sure helps me get a helluva lot of work done and is better than a hand saw or sawzall..its alot quicker too than a sawzall.. it helps keep alot of good sized trees cut back on the fence line.. Plus allows me to cut them up fast..it can be used for property clean up in rural areas too, i dont just cut branches with it i cut decent sized trees with it..not humongous ones but not small ones by any means either.. I wouldnt use this saw to cut trees everyday with but it can be used for more than just storm clean up in my opinion..i'd still say its better than having a sawzall.. If you need to cut metal or do demolition/ construction work get a sawzall they are $20 at Harbor Freight, if you need a chainsaw and dont have one this is a pretty good buy for $100, my only regret is not buying one sooner..

    If you pull the muffler you will see the problem, the outlet on the cylinder is 5 times bigger than the exhaust on the muffler. Have a customer returned Remington same animal. To meet Carb requirments it's forcing already burned exhaust back into the saw. If you cut the internal baffels and open up the exhaust it will gain power, but of course void the warranty.

    I am thinking about getting the 3714 reconditioned for 69, I got the blue max for 135, a 52cc and that saw is getting better and better after 15 hours of use. I figure my go 2 saw cuts down the tree, takes the trunk down to 6 inhes and let the ryobi take over the rest of the tree which is 2/3 the work thus saving my new best friend the blue maxfrom an early retirement. Also my electric chain saw has worn out making the 69 dollar backup look like a good gamble If I get junk, send it back and get one till I get one that works as it should. No reason for a hissy fit over a backup, You should read the reviews for the 25 percent who are mad as hell.

    After watching this review I went and purchased the Ryobi 14" saw. As I began cutting through the first few logs I noticed that the saw bogged down and was starting to think I made a mistake. You see I grew up cutting wood and was a tree trimmer professionally. Back then we used McCulloch 14" saws for liming and small branches which worked great. I figure this Ryobi would be a practical substitute. The one thing that really is the only real draw back about this saw is the safety tip. I had personally never heard of or seen one prior to purchasing this saw and when I removed it, I noticed a significant improvement in the performance of the saw. If you want a good affordable day take the safety-tip off. If you want a saw that boggs on an 8" limb, then I guess keep it on.

    • @jeepster19751
      @jeepster19751 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The safety tip has nothing to do with how the saw runs or performs. It simply prevents the bar tip from contacting anything in the kickback zone.

    • @rustyshackelford9156
      @rustyshackelford9156 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Claims to be a former professional tree trimmer but then doesn't realize the safety tip doesn't affect performance or chain speed, etc whatsoever. Any performance improvement you thought you got from removing the anti kickback safety tip was in your head.

  • @GrassrootsCommando
    @GrassrootsCommando 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I've had a refurbished Ryobi 3714 for several years now. Paid about $60 at Home Depot.
    I've cut plenty of logs with it. Always fires up easy and just runs. Very reliable.
    I definitely recommend getting rid of the factory "safety tip" on the bar--or even better, putting a good 16" bar and chain on it.
    There's no doubt you can pay 3 times as much and get a more powerful, faster cutting chainsaw. If you need a more powerful, faster cutting saw, then you should definitely buy one of those. Basically, more power means you cut faster, and less power means you cut slower. If you don't need that extra power / cutting speed, the Ryobi 3714 is a really great little chainsaw for ~$60 that will handle logs up to about 11" diameter just fine with the factory bar and chain.
    ...and as others have mentioned, the video demonstration of the saw's supposed lack of power wasn't particularly enlightening. The chain should be moving when you contact the piece. The fact that a bound-up saw won't move the chain isn't a sign that a saw is "underpowered." You could definitely bind up a saw with a more powerful engine with the same result.

    • @GettinJunkDone
      @GettinJunkDone  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have definitely changed my mind about this saw since posting this video. I generally keep it in my van for the emergency use or pop up side job, and keep my better saws secured at home for the scheduled jobs. If a saw is going to get stolen, the Ryobi is easier and cheaper to replace at any Home Depot.

    Save the money to buy a small Echo. You will actually get a real Chainsaw. Yes it'll cost double or near double but do you want a Chainsaw or a get by saw. I bought a Ryobi 14 inch. Started good, ran good, then ran HOT ,then lost power. The fuel mix was right. Same fuel in my Echo. Echo still good. Ryobi junk. The best light Echo is the cs352. If you can afford it the cs490 is a professional grade . Light 50cc saw. I can't recommend this saw. Find a good dealer. Tell him you want 20% off. Echo offers a 20% off sale once a year. Big box store don't discount. Get a saw box. Learn how to file chains. NEVER run ethanol in anything with a carb. Mix 1 ounce Seafoam per gallon of fuel. Run saw at least every 2 months. Pour out old fuel. Yes you can burn mixed gas in cars.I mix new fuel every 3 months. Sthil cost a lot more than Echo. I'm of the opinion that Echo is the best saw for the price and my cs590 Timberwolf cuts as well as my brothers Sthil 391. So, spend wisely and enjoy you produces or go cheap and reap the troubles.

    What? You must've got a bad one. I got the Ryobi 37cc 16" 2 weeks. Since then, I have cut down 6 trees that were about 10-12" diameter and bucked them all. Blue Spruce, Maple, one small Oak, and a few ash trees. I also cut many smaller saplings and a lot of limbing. I'd say all in all I have run it about 20-25 hours. Not only has everything worked without a hiccup so far, but I don't see much dulling in the chain yet either. And I today expected to be disappointed. At this point, the thing paid for itself. I would have shelled out a few thousand bucks for the work I've done with it thus far (when you factor in hauling away of debris).
    Also, a sawzall with an arbor blade isn't a bad tool, I have one (corded) but it really doesn't compare to a chainsaw even for limbing smaller limbs. Besides, a cordless sawzall isn't very practical when you have a lot of work to do unless you have tons of batteries and chargers.

    I have used this Ryobi 16" 37cc saw for my limbing and small cuts (super lightweight, and a good inexpensive little saw for little projects) for over 5 years. Of course, I upgraded this Ryobi to an Oregon bar and chain to make it work well. But I digress. I never expected that this saw would become a staple on my dads property. I did not expect that it would be a little workhorse that would show up every day to limb, chop, and make short work of new growth. I am on my 3rd chain, and (as I explained, go OREGON bars!) my 2nd bar. Learn how to keep your chain sharp, so you are not buying a new chain when what you have just needs a little honing (imagine everyone throwing away their pocket knives, instead of sharpening them correctly).
    Whatever saw you choose to take home, just remember the mantra of wise men everywhere.
    'She is a fickle bitch. You have to learn just what she wants. Just what she needs, even if she will never articulate that fact to you. Use your Zen power, and figure out what she needs to be happy and grind hard. She will never tell you, so you had better figure that out for yourself. If you can unlock that mystery, she will stay by your side forever, and never let you down'.

    I will go ahead and say it. I have a sthil MS 271 farm boss that came with a standard 20 inch bar. And I will say it now chainsaws are a hobby for me. Yes I said HOBBY. I recently got into chainsaw carving about literally 2 bays ago and my little McCulloch 3200 series chainsaw has about had it. And the sthil weighs about 12 to 13 pounds alone without the bar and that's heavy. Too heavy for chainsaw carving even if I put a 16 inch bar on it it's still going to be too heavy. So this man forgot a fourth group of people. And that is chainsaw carving. Which even though this ryobi may not be geared for it. As long as I don't blip the throttle and hold the throttle wide open for too long when I'm carving, the saw will most likely last as long as my sthil possibly can as long as I or anyone else takes care of a saw like the ryobi in this video

      I'm no expert, but not new to chainsaws. All I was saying was that I didn't like this saw so much. Any suggestions besides that?

      @Gettin' Junk Done yeah, make sure the chain is moving when you make contact with what you're cutting. You're always going to bog the saw down otherwise.

    Don't buy a ryobi chain saw. I bought two new ones over the years. They are junk.

      I have 4 ryobi chainsaws and we heat our house with wood, I have used the shit out of these saws without no issues. I only run the premixed gas in the metal cans though.
