Great video man! For anyone who is still wondering why there's a difference between using APS-C mode/clear image zoom in camera VS cropping in post, here it is. When you shoot on the A7III for example you are reading off a 24mp sensor, downsampling from roughly 6K down to 4K. 4K resolution works out at 8.3 Megapixels, this means the camera has plenty of room to crop in from the 24mp sensor readout PRIOR to writing the file to your memory card before you'll get close to hitting that 8.3MP limit of 4K. That is how there is next to no difference in sharpness when using APS-C mode or Clear image zoom; it's because no matter if you use the full sensor read-out or one of the crop features, the resolution of the actual video file written to your SD card will be the same, 3840x2160. However if you record the full sensor readout image and then try to crop in post to achieve the same scaling, you're not cropping from the original full sensor readout like how your camera can do internally, you're simply scaling up that 8.3mp/3840x2160 of resolution (your 4K file). This means you will IMMEDIATELY start to lose resolution. So yes, it matters.
I heard clear image zoom is not as good as crop mode because it zooms in digitally, is this true? What if I only go up to 1.5x without crop mode enabled? What about if I use clear image zoom with crop mode?
Carlos Clear Image Zoom is some type of Sony Black Magic that I cannot stop using when I need an extra punch in.. I don’t know how they are doing this but that extra 1.5 punch comes in clutch!!!
Clear Image Zoom is a live sensor read window crop. It happens at the raw A/D converter level. The read scan can tighten or widen the lines that it reads straight off the sensor. The sensor offloads that window in such a way that the image processor doesn't have to do the scaling work. It's live, read-scaled on the sensor itself. Because this is done at the raw, Bayer sensor data stage and NOT the post CODEC de-Bayered stage, you NOT are "zooming" in on a "video" recording. It's the smarter way to do it with less compression artifacts. It's a "raw" read zoom and not a post "video" zoom.
Huh, Clear Image Zoom performs much better than I expected. I had originally discounted the A7Siii because it lacks an APS-C mode, but this looks perfectly usable to me. Thanks for the comparisons.

Hi I saw your videos it's nice... I would like to know about 3d scanner what type of scanner they used inside the scanner and what type of laser they used inside the casting,..... I believe it is not that much deficiencies What type of programming the useing for this 3d software
If you physically swap from a 50mm lens to an 85mm, you get much more compression. Is that also the case with clear image zoom? Or are you just getting a scaled-in version of a 50mm "look"? I hope I'm phrasing that correctly...
I'm weary of digital zooms so I had to look through a lot of youtube videos before I found one that properly explained what this does and why it's not like digital zoom in point & shoots. Also the comments below helped as well. And also you title is worded PERFECTLY because that's what I want to know. Can't I just zoom in post? Great video and great community of commenters. Having to sift through about 6 videos before this one is why they need to bring back dislikes.
There is a ton of software scaling algos...you should have compared a bunch...many algos don't introduce sharpening artifacts but produce a result similar (and sometimes better) than the internal digital zoom upscaling...
realizing that everyone's workflow is different, I went with my own workflow. Hopefully more in the community will do the same so that workflow comparisons and results can be shared.

clear image zoom on the sony cameras is basically giving you full resolution as in 1:1 from the sensor which is why it is so good imho

it is not like swapping lenses...it is like zooming in to the focal length you are using.
CIZ does not change the look of your lens. If you are using 50mm it will be a cropped 50mm look with same 4k resolution, that's all.

why not just zoom in during post WITHOUT using upscaling??
I think you're right, basically the same thing.
Then u will lose the 4k resolution if you are exporting in 4K. If you are exporting to HD it will not matter and yes you can zoom in post.
