I think, from what I remember, you can hand crank your sewing machine over a metal zip. However, very time consuming and probably not 100% successful every time. Therefore safer with zipper with nylon teeth or use buttons - sorry just kidding lol. Happy New Year x

To be honest I never use zippers with metal teeth, I find there is a lot more flexibility using nylon and I like being able to sew over them without fear. 😆 If your zipper has metal teeth you would need to measure the length you need and remove the teeth from a section with your pliers the same way you remove the zipper stops so you can shorten them and sew on a tab. However for the types of patterns I use it is generally not recommended or if you do use them then I would suggest getting the length specified in the pattern to start with so you don’t have to mess with it. If you are doing the turned end you would keep the stops on and turn the bare tape 90 degrees past that point, and unfortunately the Butler method won’t work with metal zippers.

Dress zippers are for clothing. I would never used a dress zipper on a bag. It lowers the quality.
