OKSew
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 2 พ.ย. 2011
Hi! I’m Nicole - originally from Australia, I now live in the US with my husband and 4 kids. I like to consider myself a “beginner’s teacher”, helping you perfect the basics so you can build the confidence to master more complex projects. My motto is, if you can sew and cut a straight line, you can sew any bag. And if you can't sew and cut a straight line yet, I can teach you how! I love to share all the tips and tricks I have picked up over the years. There is a Socrates quote, "Employ your time in improving yourself by other men's (sic) writings so that you shall come easily by what others have labored hard for", and that is how I think about bagmaking.
In 2020 I began running sewalongs for Geek Garden Fabric which led to the creation of OKSew for easy sharing of tutorials. The name came about from how many times I started a sentence with “Okay, so…” in my early videos. If you wish you can follow my page Lion & Loch, where I share my finished bags.
So, let’s get going!

Add Vinyl Trim to Your Zipper Panel (No Raw Edges!)
In this skill builder tutorial I will demonstrate how to add a vinyl trim to a zipper gusset without any raw edges. It is suggested to use an accent vinyl that is on the thinner side for best results. If working with thicker materials attaching the trim first then installing the zipper is the method I would recommend.

MATH FOR THE WINNNNNNN!!!!! Thank you for the pattern & for taking the time to make the video, it is GREAT!🤩
Fist time using vinyl for me! thank you for such an easy to follow tutorial. I loved making this, can't wait to make more.
Das Innenleben ist furchtbar.
Well! That is amazing. Never seen it but it makes such sense. Again, you are such a great teacher. Thank you!
@oksew made these pattern weights! Love them thanks for the idea
What is that pink handled tool you use at the end of the video after you have sewn the lining closed?
Hi Nicole, Thank you for sharing this pattern! I was wondering if you (or anyone else) has experienced issues with their zipper tape fraying after regular use. I've always heard not to snip into your tape, and even with melting and fray check, it makes me nervous!
Thank you so much for this. I find you easier to follow than others on TH-cam (and I love your accent). I've thrown away two catastrophies so far, but I have high hopes for my 3rd one. On the 2nd one, I made a mistake that I'll never make again...I actually LOL'd at myself. Learning is fun! :O)
Bags here D U P B A G Y have everything you expect, and it's cheap, come and see the girl
I have seen hundreds of “how to” sewing videos. You are stellar in your complete and through instructions. Your skills are impeccable. The narration is intelligent and accurate. Thankful in Rockford, Illinois.
Oh, I love that look! Thanks for sharing
Excellent tutorial. Great explanations. You’re a super teacher. Thank you.😊
I especially like the careful instructions on attaching zipper pulls to a zipper. I have a ton of old zippers, mostly 9" skirt zippers, that I'm wanting to put to use. You have inspired me to get to work!
AWESOME! Thanks for sharing another wonderful video.
Great video. The trim makes the bag look very professional. Which pattern is this boxy bag? I love the style.

Thanks so much! I love your videos! Very easy to follow and informative!
Once again another great tutorial 👏 I love your method of teaching🙌 I also love your fabric choices. They are truly spectacular and add so much interest to the bag 🩷❤️Thank you!
Thank you Michelle!
Love your tutorials, as a newbie to bag making these really help to think thru projects, and think outside the box!😀💯💕
Super - thank you Nicole
The trim really adds another dimension to the overall look of the bag Nicole. It's a great design feature to use that doesn't take a lot of planning. Would you say that we would have to think about the thickness of trim used too? There's so many vinyls available now at various thickness/weight.
Yes definitely, I should have put that in the video! I have added it to the description, thank you for the suggestion. ❤️
Super. Thank you.
Thank you for this tutorial ! This method classes up a zipper quite nicely!
Wonderful tutorial, what size are your pieces you used to make your zipper bag please?
I used 6.5Lx12W for the main panels, the lining is a single piece 12.25Lx12W.
@@OKSew474 thank you!
Another great skill-builder in the series.
Excellent as always. Thank You
Thank you too!
Can you say where you get your hardware?
Hi Patricia! I get it from a few different places depending on the finish and size I need. I like craftmemore on Amazon, My Handmade Space, Emmaline Bags, Purse Supplies R Us on Etsy, and for longer rivets and the larger sliders I use Gold Star Tools (with the caveat that I have found there is a lot of variability in their hardware quality and I only buy those two harder to find items from them as a result).
What brand scissors do you use?
I have a few different brands in my regular rotation (I have about a dozen on my table). I like Gingher, I have a couple of their 5” pairs that are my most used scissors. My embroidery scissors and my duckbill scissors are Tula Pink, the embroidery ones are nice & sharp for snips and the duckbill ones are great for trimming. For my bigger shears I have a more affordable but still good quality Livingo pair, and also a 6” pair in the same brand that is my “utility” pair. I also use this brand around my house & sewing room for non-fabric scissors. I do have a bigger set of Gingher shears but they are quite heavy and I just never find myself reaching for them.
Thanks very much for sorting this out for us!
Holy Cow! This blows my mind!
Brilliant!
Thanks for another great tip ❤
Will try this on my next bag. Excellent video. What is the pink-handled tool? What did you do with it?
Thanks so much Jean! You could be referring to either my seam roller or my thread zapper. The seam roller allows me to crease materials without my iron, and the thread zapper is used to melt threads rather than use a lighter or snip them, providing another level of security against unravelling. I have made short favourite things videos on both if you wanted to hear me chat about them in more detail.

Fantastic way to make a beautiful crossbody strap with all the hardware needed to be stylish!
Your instructions are spot on. thank you for you attention to detail.
You are very welcome!
Do you have a recommended brand of vinyl to use? I'm new to bag making and am still getting my head wrapped around best practices for materials.
I’d like an answer to this question, too!
I may need to do a video on different vinyls and the things that I like and don't like about them, there is a lot to say but I will do my best to give you an answer here. There are a few things to think about, but in my humble opinion the main things to consider when starting out are cost and user-friendliness. When I was first working with bags my main concern was with keeping my costs low as I was practicing and building up my own skillset. Unfortunately, some of the cheaper vinyls available are a little trickier to work with and can present problems that you won't have with other options, which can result in frustration and ends up in a false economy situation. My favorite vinyl to work with is Mora Faux Leather from Emmaline, which is a Canadian based shop, but unless you are in Canada the cost of shipping may be prohibitive until you are certain about your future in bagmaking enough to make the investment. A good US-based alternative is myhandmade space. You are looking for vinyls that are "faux leathers" or "faux suedes", preferably non-textured as those tend to be thicker, and nothing too shiny or shimmery as those are harder to work with. Anything with a more matte finish around 1mm is going to be a good starting point. You may also have luck with faux leather and/or lychee grain vinyls from suppliers on Amazon to give you a feel for working with vinyl without having to shell out a lot of money to get started, I would opt for ones with reasonable reviews and as with the others about 1mm thick and avoid glitter in any form.
@@OKSew474 This is incredibly helpful, thank you so much for the information!!
Excellent video.
Thank you Brenda 🥰
Excellent video - as usual 😊
Thank you Kathy!
Hi. That was great. I wonder if you could guide us in adding an oval to the outside and the lining bottom so we could use the bag for carrying the baby wet wipes pack? Thanks
I will see what I can come up with!
Thank you. I got your suggested small pliers and just got 4 rivets out of a bag that I wanted to make changes too. Worked like a charm and no damage to fabric.
That’s fantastic!! 🎉

If you use a windows operating system this should work for you: Scaling Up With Poster Settings - An OKSew Quick Tip th-cam.com/video/sFi89P-gWlo/w-d-xo.html Otherwise, using the video on adjusting one dimension would work, but you would do it for both height and width. Adjusting the depth is a little trickier, I will have a tutorial on that soon but it’s not up yet.
Great video!
Thank you Ann!
Thank you
