    That's interesting. I noticed that we drop the 't' after the 'n' on "twenty" and say the 't' like 'd' on thirty, forty, etc.

      Weird thing about American number pronunciations is that we say twen-DY, Thir-DY, Four-Dy, but Fif- thy and six-thy, yet again Seven-dy,eigh-dy, Nine-dy.... So only 50 and 60 have the "tea" sound at the end.

    Hi Rachel, I have a question. Can I drop the "t" in the word "internship?" Thanks!

    • @rachelsenglish
      @rachelsenglish  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! This is a great question! For this word it is not common to drop the T - which is interesting because you would think that you would drop it based on words like 'interview, internet' where you do drop the T. I'm not sure why this is the case, but it is definitely less common to hear the T dropped in the word 'internship'.

  • @redaamer4428

    Hi, Rachel, why do we pronounce the T in the word "center" and "winter" stop although it is at the beginning of a syllable?????

    • @rachelsenglish
      @rachelsenglish  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! The reason you can do this is because the syllable that follows the T here is unstressed. If it were stressed, the T would usually be pronounced as a True T.

      Yes! There are lots of other situations where you will do this with the T consonant ('identify, interstate'). We pronounce the T in all kinds of different ways. You may want to check out some of the videos I've created on the variety of T pronunciations in American English: rachelsenglish.com/videos/sounds/consonants/t-as-in-time/

    One question, do all Americans pronounce "S" as "S" or some of them make it "Sh"?
    Regards

      +Mohamed F. Afifi The letter S make s the [s] or [z] sound mostly, but sometimes 'sh', like in 'sugar'.

    Is this academic?

  • @vova47
    @vova47 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Why does the "T" has to be dropped? Is it the inability of Americans to hear it, like Japanese not being able to hear the difference between "L" and "R" and if so, should you teach people who CAN hear the difference the imitate the inability just to blend in?

    • @rachelsenglish
      @rachelsenglish  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This is just a habit of Americans. We can definitely hear the T, but we often drop it after the N sound. It's not an inability, but rather one of the ways American pronunciation has shifted over the years.

    • @vova47
      @vova47 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your reply, Rachel!
      I consider this habit regrettable and slightly annoying, not that it will matter even slightly to those who insist on using this pronunciation.
      Respect the "T", it's there for a reason.
