    Perhaps for natives it comes more natural, but for me, as a Brazilian, until this video it had always been complicated to notice the difference. Great job, and thanks.

    I just saw the movie "The Irishman" yesterday, and since my mom has trouble with English I wrote down: The Irishman, The Irish man, and The Irish Men and she pronounced all 3 the same. When I told her it's all pronounced differently, she didn't believe me. But now she knows haha. Even when I said men and man she just said "it sounds exactly the same". Until I showed her this video :)

    Once again, I agree with everythng you are saying about how to pronounce 'man' and 'men'. But in anticipation of the final nasal sound 'n' it causes the vowels 'a' and 'e' to become nasalized too.

    Wonderful video!Keep up the good work! :) I'm curious about the transcription of 'man', I've seen [mæn], [mɛən], [meən] or even [mɪən], but never the one you use in the video, I don't mean to imply yours is wrong, I'm just surprised. By the way, my cousin is Canadian and he uses a pure [æ] in man, dance, chance, and, example, channel etc. I even asked him to pronounce the word 'man' a couple of times (he started asking if there was something wrong :D) and I could clearly hear the same a sound as in bath. Accents..never cease to amaze me, too bad most natives don't realize how diverse they are.

  • @HANSMKAMP
    @HANSMKAMP 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    For Dutch (and maybe speakers of other languages than Dutch and English) this video is extremely important. They can't hear and speak the difference between [ɛ] and [æ]. They are very easily confused.
    We have some English loanwords in our language, such as "tram". The - according to me - correct pronunciation of "tram" in English is [tɹæm], but we Dutch tend to pronounce it as [trɛm], which is obviously pronunciated with a strong Dutch accent. If you speak English like that, the English listeners will notice that and think: "He/she is a foreigner, not a native speaker of English."
