    I'am from Germany, my english is not so good, sry.
    I look the videos from you and USA it's a so beautiful country!
    I was a child, I was in Florida and later in Canada, west.
    Here in Europe you have EVERY time cars, trucks, motorbikes, peoples.
    So many people live here, you are never alone on the streets.
    Good luck, trucker!
    Thanks for your videos!

    White Bird Hill was my first big hill driving my rv. My brother is a professional truck driver and taught me to drive my rv before i left home. I was so proud of myself going up and down white bird. I barley used my breaks! Great video. Beauitful drive! 28 foot class A. Just me and my daughter.

    Drove OTR little over 30 yrs, loved running out west some beautiful country. I sit on my front porch now and hear a diesel whin going up an down the highway, I miss the rumble of my 425 cat and the hum of the tires on the asphalt. I truly wish I was still out there running around the country on 18 wheels. To all you asphalt gypsy's keep the rubber side down and the shiney side up.

    I remember running the old whitebird in the 60s, 47 kw, 5 and a 3. 275 cummins.no jakes in those days. came down in 2nd direct with 10 lbs of air pressure on the brake application gauge. Old highway was real crooked. the switchbacks helped hold you back, when you go around a sharp turn your rig drags harder. oh yeah, trucking in the old days! no ac or cruise control either. enjoy the videos. keep making them! Be safe brother.

    Thanks for the ride and the scenery. Moved to SW Idaho a few years ago and have driven 95 lots down into Oregon and to 80 at Winnemucca, but never up toward Riggins so far. Idaho is a beautiful state to live in, but too many people moving in is going to change it.

    • @joncrane7661
      @joncrane7661 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Jim problem is the infrastructure built up and around. Improvements to parks and roads to get people there. When all these new people settle and have kids where will they settle? Housing prices squeeze out natives. Thi a is killing our state. Politics changing the face of the state. City born, book learned people do not know how to take care of wild lands.

    • @Dave_9547
      @Dave_9547 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Alexis ayala Well, people can move pretty much wherever they want. Yes, I wish the liberals would stay away, but there are enough of them that are home grown and of course most live in Boise, the largest city in Idaho.

    The tribe beat the Army badly. The tribe went across Idaho, ended up in Montana and turned north to safety in Canada. But the Army caught up with the Nez Perce close to the Canadian border where Chief Joseph finally surrendered. Chief Joseph beat the Army so bad the Army Military Academy at West Point still to this day study the battle tactics. Remarkable man and people! They invented the Applelousa horse for mountain use. Amazing drive today! Been though I live here and know this country it was good to ride shotgun with you and just gawk around. Thx!

    Enjoy the scenery you provide, I get to come to the US every now and again for Motorbike rides, comming again in July heading home september so enjoy your mid west roads as they are the ones i like to do, have had 3 trips so far so recognise some roads and like to use your thoughts to plan routes. I am still a Trucker, bought my first truck in 1979 and still love it, best life available. I thought White Bird Pass was a not so bad road nice and steep in places and a couple of good turns. You guys dont realise how good your roads are until you do some New Zealand back roads, but we do not have to cover your mileage and deal with your traffic volumes...I admire your patience in traffic....Peace!!!

    Hi Mike; Enjoyed your mountain climbing video with the White Bird pass and historic site. The White Bird song is familiar as well. I think by Allman Bros.
    Chips on seal to build up the initially inadequate [for trucks] base. The chips raise hell with snow plowing blades. Great relaxing with a rod in your hand whether salmon or fly rod fishing. I get my fishing licenses free now, for both salt and fresh water fishing. Good for Mass to N.J. saltwater and all Mass fresh water.
    The conservation lobby pulled a fast one a few years back with a bill to ban leg-hold trapping for beavers mostly.. They got all the old ladies to vote the ban... of course there was a blind side...the bill gave the conserve lobby part of the hunting and fishing license sales money and a say in how it was spent. Damned old ladies should stay home and knit. The beavers are still building their dams that now must be blown -up to prevent river overflow into basements.
    The local Indians watch for the seeding of the clam flats then come in with their scoops and take it all without permit or limit by treaty rights. They should seed at night. And so it goes in the East where all your wide open spaces are crammed together into short, steep hills and blind curves.

    I've been thru there in dead winter.....while it is still beautiful.....it can be a nightmare. I spent two days in that "little town" and the folks there were nice as can be.

    You asked about the song, 'White Bird", "White Bird" was written in December 1967, in Seattle, Washington. Manager Matthew Katz had moved the band there to polish their act at a Seattle venue before booking them into San Francisco nightclubs. Living in the attic of a Victorian house across the street from Volunteer Park, the band had inadequate food and no transportation during a dreary Seattle winter. The song evolved from the depression of the band's circumstances and yearning to be free.[2] The song's repeated chorus is, "White bird must fly or she will die.
    I used to work in Lewiston and drove this road a lot!

    Idaho has some of the prettiest country in the world. I live way out in the woods in a pretty spot in Tn. but I always liked trucking through Idaho. Would love to live there other than the winters. You can't beat the country side there for sure.

      Its changing as the land is crowding up with new houses. Even in places like this. BLM selling off land to subdivision builders. We have problems out here.

    One good reason to keep your speed down and keep your brakes cool all the way down the hill is there might arise a situation where you need to stop near or at the bottom of one of those steep grades like White Bird and Lewiston. While I was a rookie, in my first truck, I had a drive shaft U-joint fail and start to come apart while on my way from Wenatchee to Lewiston. I new something was starting to go wrong but I could not figure out what. I had stopped the truck and looked it over trying to figure out the problem. Did not find it. I stopped at the top of the grade and checked again. Did not find the problem. Went on down the hill carefully. When I got to the bottom, I stopped into the shop and had them look at the truck. They found both a bad joint and a fresh fracture on the yoke to the front differential. I was down for almost 2 days while the struggled with repairing it and getting parts. If that would have failed coming down the grade at 80,000 pounds could have been an intense adventure. Especially for a rookie. What I learned that day helped me later on when another U-joint started to give warning it was time to fix it. They can go from good to away pretty quick.

    I pulled a 33' triple axle travel trailer (gvw 15000) out of Yosemite in a F-250 single powerstoke w/o a jake brake.. 2nd gear.. about 15 mph the whole way.. never passed a pullout without using it to let the hoards by and cool my poor poor brakes.. I actually manually activated the trailer brakes a few times to lighten the load on the truck.

    You remind me of my brother. he taught me how to drive a semi. I have been driving anything with wheel since I was 11. 1st. truck was a 1946 13 letter shit spreader and I still don't like them. I started driving commercial in 1982. I come from an old school trucking family. My Dad pulled flat bed and my brother and I would pull just about everything else. We got paid by commission. which was 30% of the load.. I ran mostly mid-west and west coast. I've ran most of the road that you run on. My last truck was a Freightliner FLD 120, 550 Cat turned up to 625 with a 18 double overdrive. She wasn't the best looking rig out there but she had heart. Anything long and oversized I got the call. I have hauled a 80 Ft. 6 Ft. in diameter piece of pipe. Mistress was a LONG truck and I had a 53 Ft. Raven hooked to her.
    I miss being out there!!! The Dr. retired me in 2002. because of my disability. I wear braces on both legs from a spinal injury. The Feds changed the laws and put me out work.
    You video's make this old busted up drivers day to see that the "old school" way of trucking is still alive.
    THANK YOU AND BE SAFE!!!

    Gee, you took me back with the "White Bird" reference. It is a very melancholy tune about how a caged bird must fly, or she will die. With your freedom on the highway, you probably can take the message to heart. Band is It's a Beautiful Day.
