I drove this in Aug '23, it is a stunningly beautiful highway. The San Juan Mountains are every bit as beautiful as RMNP in my opinion. Drive the speed limit and avoid distractions, there are plenty of pullovers if traffic backs up behind you or if you just want to take in the fabulous views.

Very beautiful. But no way I could ever travel on it unless I was knocked out. Too scary!! 😬

This stretch of road is my oasis, I'll be riding down this road on my bike next month hopefully with lots of golden aspens. Thanks for the video, I always daydream about my annual ride.

Mann. I cant believe I was on this road in the middle of a snowstorm. As a first time driver on snow and at night time, I have to say it was a trip to hell. But , I would definitely do it again.. lol

Definitely not a great place for fumbling around distracted driving lol. Penalty for failure is quite high.

Being from another state, I don't miss out driving 550 when I am enjoying the San Juan's. Drive slowly, keeping to your side of the road, watch for a crazy driver (never encountered one yet up there), and stop at pull-offs to relax and enjoy the scenery. The butt-pucker level can be high. Maybe that's why the tractor/trailer are parked in the southbound lane!! After you reach the mountain valley, the highway can be driven more relaxed. Except for a few hairpin curves on the Silverton side. Hope the drone wasn't lost in that creek waaay down there!

Amazing aerial footage! This stretch of highway looks absolutely jaw dropping! But since this is only a 2:00 minute video I assume the entire 25 mile stretch of this highway is not a cliffhanging, guardrail-less, white knuckle test of nerves? After seeing other videos it looks like this is the most fun section (or scariest) depending on your perspective?

Correct, this is the most treacherous part. Other parts of the drive from Durango to Ouray are equally as sketchy , this part is considered the most sketchy ! Lol

Yikes, brings back memories when I drove this and my heart was a pounding. Don't like those drop offs. Beautiful, but if your driving, you don''t see it.

Very beautiful scenery. I drove this 2 years ago. Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to look around as I drove. I was too busy staying between the yellow and white stripes. Lol

I can totally relate! I wasn't going to take my eyes off those lane markers even for an instant.

I drove this in June 2023. I was driving solo, so, eyes on the road. And now that I watch this, holy cow! Am I glad I didn't know what I was actually doing!

Cenla Aerial Imagery I survived, but if we could have turned around and went another way...we would have. Do not recommend for people scared of heights!

A heavy haul wrecker came two hours later and hauled him to the first turn around and then back to Montrose. He was in a bind.

I wonder why no guard rails in that section just south of Ouray?

Just nowhere to attach them in most places. Penalty for failure is high.

I found this stretch of road unnerving on a perfect, summer day, I'd definitley avoid it if at all possible in the winter.

I think this is the road I had driven from Colorado to New Mexico (where the road was in much needed repair). Nerve wracking for me (I was driving a cargo van).
Didn't help that on the NM side, I had to watch out for cows and at one point a falcon, or whatever bird of prey, flew right in front of me while it was getting dark.
Between that road and driving up that mesa in Utah, I'm cool on taking the backways of out west, lol.

    • @cenlaaerialimagery6291

No , it survived. Crazy DJI video maker has no fade out options to make the videos end nicely OR it's a user issue on my end. 😞
