    This effect works really well on a big piano chord as well.

      Very true! In fact I had kind of forgotten, but I did a similar video about this over a year ago using a piano!

    Hi Pete, great tutorial about reverse effects. I already knew this for FL and I wasn’t aware it’s also possible in GarageBand! You are becoming a legendary expert about GarageBand for iOS music production. Your track sounds very professional and although I use different pro music apps myself (including GarageBand) it’s incredible how far we come in technology these days. From million dollar studio to home studio with pc to laptop with headphones and now to iPad and iPhone! Awesome!!!!

    • @PeteJohnsMusic
      @PeteJohnsMusic  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks Emiel. It is truly amazing what we can do with our iPhones these days. This video was also edited, rendered and uploading on my phone. It’s ridiculous! We live in the future. 😊👍

    • @emiel333
      @emiel333 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Pete Johns You’re welcome, Pete. Yes it’s definitely awesome in this paradigm we live where we can record and produce fully produced songs on a device that fits in the pocket!!! Also cool you made the video completely on the iPhone (including editing. Do you use LumaFusion? I bought it two months ago and it’s astonishing). We sure live in the future my friend! Besides making music, we are communicating without costs while each of us live in another part of the world. Who thought of this back in the 80’s and 90’s!?!

    • @PeteJohnsMusic
      @PeteJohnsMusic  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Right?! Yes, I do use and love LumaFusion. Great to be able to ours my screen recordings directly in to LF and then quickly combine with other video and audio. What I do on this channel wasn’t even close to being a thing in the 80s and 90s. The closest thing was the dude at the guitar shop who would show you cool tricks in your 4-track cassette recorder.

    You should always add normal reverb after the reverse reverb, to avoid the dead zone as soon as the reverb finishes and the dry voice is heard.

    Great that you put links to similar videos that might be helpful. I noticed on the link I watched that comping processed vocals together can lead to parts with double processing. Are you currently comping things like guitar and vocal and does that mean that you are usually recording in the clean mic setting?

    • @PeteJohnsMusic
      @PeteJohnsMusic  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Tim. Thanks for the feedback. I’m glad the related video links are useful because I spend a bit of time making sure that there are some relevant videos that flow on form the current topic included.
      So with the vocal comping it depends on what I’m doing and what effect I’m going for. I’ll sometimes have a clean version of the vocal in there to work with it if I’m complying between two tracks I’ll just leave the same effects on them. The beauty part of recording in GarageBand is that the effects are not baked in to the track so you can easily manipulate and remove them afterwards if you need to.

      Hmmmm..... check the plugin settings and the mater reverb and echo. There may just be reverb built in to the sound otherwise which may not be able to be removed. Perhaps ask over at the GarageBand Users Facebook group if you want some more support - studiolivetoday.com/gbu

    Sa-weeeet maestro. You always leave me enthused. Now, something I did notice on this technique, is that it gives that lovely build-up of course, BUT that got almost entirely lost on one of my efforts, because of compression? You will be familiar Pete, with that unwanted side-effect (oh god, audiophile puns now), but for anyone who hasn’t tried and figured out what happens yet, here goes... so you copied Pete’s tips and got your sssSSSHHHH or whatever, at the start of a word or for me it’s that classic, the cymbal sound i was reversing, and you know it is all good.
    THEN you go and compress the master track - Pete of course shows how to drop down a master track of your mix elsewhere on this fanatasmaglorious channel - and as if by fun-destroying magic, the increase in volume, almost completely disappears. In short, the effect you worked so hard for, a ramping-up sound that happens to be achieved by the reverse technique Pete amply demonstrated, is negated by the fact that compression of course, is designed to do the EXACT OPPOSITE! I struggled to figure what was up on my finished song for ages, kept messing with the mix, re-mastering, making the ramp-up of volume much more accentuated using automation in the mix, then re-re-mastering, before the penny dropped.
    No matter how much I made the volume ramping-up accentuated or steeper in automation, my compression of the master track, patently would almost entirely work to UNDO that exact phenomenon, by making of course the LOW volume end of the ramp-up reverse cymbal sound in my song, be raised up asap to the PEAK volume or loudness, it ENDED UP AT!
    A classic case of the DAW doing what I ASKED it to do but not what I WANTED it to do. Now, as all good conversationalists do, I leave space for anybody else to jump in with a range of solutions to this compression anarchy suffered by our lovely, handcrafted reverse-play reverb effects. Ok actually, I only realised the crux of the issue, after releasing the song on iTunes - a feat not accomplished without large amounts of reliance on Pete’s channel and guidance - so maybe it’s not as much me being personable as my brain taking it’s own sweet time to turn the cogs and compute the symptoms.
    I mean, I guess you could somehow ‘omit’ the compression on the final master track mix, in the particular seconds of time the cymbal in my case, sounds? But, while that would work in my own song’s completely peculiar circumstances, it’s patently affecting all instruments etc at the short segment we obviate compression? My own song literally has the reverse cymbal sound, entirely on it’s own, in a hiatus right in the middle of it, but you don’t want people creating fake and artistically unwarranted or indeed naff, open spaces for a cymbal or one-word vocal solo (!) en masse.
    So, I am open to suggestions as to how to solve this irritating undoing of our efforts, in the general case. How did I get around it? As hinted earlier, I actually didn’t. What happened was, I began to take on board advice from all around that my newly-found best friend of iOS AUV3 compression (Korvpressor mainly, it’s pretty unique and easy interface grabs me), was in fact rather too liberally applied. It was like, BAM! full volume all the way, man that waveform was like the profile of a brand new bottle brush all the way along. /\/\/\/\/ yeah, kinda like that instead of /VvvvV\vv etc. So, when that was dialled down, the cymbal’s ramping-up became sufficient it was at least noticeable in the final mix/master of the song in question. Open to ideas for properly and/or surgically dealing with it.
    Thanks again to Pete for creating this ‘forum’ that cultivates the fledgling songwriters among us. I once was visiting a friend of my father’s house as a kid, and touched my fingers on the piano keys ‘DON’T’ he bellowed. Apparently, I was not to touch that unless I was already proficient. IKR?! The paradox that barrier presents to anyone possessing a degree of musical curiosity, ie how on earth you get good without touching the keys, will roll around in my head forever. Pete Johns, is like the opposite of that bloke.

    • @PeteJohnsMusic
      @PeteJohnsMusic  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha! What a great story and excellent comment. I mean, not great that your build-up is getting knocked down by compression. I’ll have to ponder on this one for a while and also keen to hear what others may have to offer on this one.
      Yes, I encourage my kids to “just do it” when it comes to learning music. If it means they don’t do their theory homework some weeks but have a blast experimenting, so be it!

    @UC6BWO4JfxBFSSf41dtF8hqg can't seem to get merge to work on laptop GarageBand? just records over it silence? I cut word, added nice long reverb, have cycle mode on for the length I want of the reverb, went into GarageBand preference so merge is active, pressed record like it says on the how to manual. and nada? without bouncing the whole track for the length of the song, any ideas?
