  • It's the big AVRO Bomber you've been waiting for! (NO! Not the Vulcan...TOO obvious!))
HK Models Avro Lancaster B.Mk1 Bomber 1/48 model review & LIVE CHAT
Correction* I got my 'Grand Slam' and 'Cookie' bombs mixed up: this model features the big 8,000lb HC Cookie along with the more conventional bombs.
This is the LAST video in the present series.

Had the honor of watching a Lancaster take off and fly overhead perhaps at maybe 100 ft.
(Maybe 30 years back at an airshow in upstate New York).
One of the most beautiful bomber aircraft ever, certainly along with the B-17.

Yep, 10/10 for Peter. You have such a genial manner.
For the resealable bags, try laying the bag on the bench (so you don't have to hold it as such), hold the flap down (sticky side up) with one hand and slide the plastic in with the other. Works for me most of the time.

Some exquisite detailing on these kit parts, especially the cockpit instruments. I especially like how they have handled the wing assembly; getting the wings to fit properly is always a major challenge on these bigger planes from my experience.

It is kind of a sad 😥commentary that models of that caliber are not manufactured any more in the West.
It is especially sad in America, where the once powerhouse companies are gone, and the only molding being done are re pops of ancient kits.
Back in 1975 the two big summer model releases were Monogram's 1/48 B-17, $15.00 US, and Tamiya's 1/48 Lancaster, which was a sensation that went for $25.00 US. There was a hobby shop in Atlanta called Hobby House that had the Lanc on sale for $19.95...
Well, Monogram and Hobby House are long gone, but I saw that B-17 on Amazon recently for $43.99. Tamiya is alive and well, their Lanc is still available for some figure over $100.00.
It would be interesting for someone on You Tube to compare the old B-17 and Lanc to the new ones just to see how far the state of the art in injection molding has progressed in 46 years.

I'm currently working on the 1/72 Mk-II Lancaster from Airfix, (the one with radial engines). There are some quality issues with the moulds,as the fuselage is slightly warped, and one front-gun was moulded short. Apart from that,it's an interesting mark.

Building my HK 1/48 as a wheels up ceiling hanger.

And the new Tamiya F-4 just arrived from FedEx and it does not have those bothersome thingys on it!

The 70's AR-G was not a great build, as a 9 year old, it was acceptable (there was nothing else at the time). The Matchbox kit was miles better (and cheaper).
I'd definitely recommend the latest Airfix 1/72 Lanc PO-S

I think parts i48 and i49 is the flare chute. If you don't already have the book, I recommend reading Len Deighton's novel "Bomber" about a fictional raid on Altgarten in June 31st 1943

Intresting review, flaps you cannot pose, whats the thought there? Anyhow looks a nice kit all in all, guess they will release a set of crew seperatly, lets hope if they do they include a dog, crew always had a mascot. Great review Peter

Thanks Jason, Looks like the ailerons are fixed but you can pose the flaps. Seems odd! 🤔

Plastic flow marks on the rear turret glazing and may not polish out it's a bit like the flow marks in silver molded kit parts

In the instructions its not a Grand Slam bomb - it looks like a 8,000 lb "Blockbuster"/ "Cookie"

Thanks Paul, yes I said that as a correction in the live chat, I realised my mistake as soon as I first saw the vid on playback. Well spotted buddy.

@@Peter-Oxley-Modelling-Lab Actually the blockbuster was a 4000 lb bomb . as seen there . they were actually joined together , sometimes in 8000 or 12000 lb the latter with a tail fin added . They had a fairly light casing basically a blast bomb . the grand slam was 22000 bomb designed by Barnes Wallis could only be carried by modified Lancasters . Only suitable to be dropped by expert crews with sufficient skill to utilise what was a very expensive case hardened steel bomb . ie the 617 squadron . Actually Tamiya did produce a version in 1/48 scale maty still be available if rather ancient kit .

So - how does it compare to Tamiya's venerable 1/48 scale lanc? Would be interesting to see a side by side to see how much better it is

When the bags are self sealing, stick the adhesive lip on the bench, fold them back on themselves and it'll be easier to slip the decals and parts back in,
AVRO woodford is now the woodford garden village, both myself and my dad worked at woodford,Roy Chadwick was killed in an AVRO TUDOR accident, and is buried at Christ church woodford

Thanks Charlie! I didn't realise that the church is next to Olivers resaturant, isn't it? I have relatives in Poynton, I will pay my respects to Mr Chadwick next time I go over. Cheers. 👍🏻

Peter, do you ever build any of these kits?

    • @Peter-Oxley-Modelling-Lab
      @Peter-Oxley-Modelling-Lab  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Some, yes...if you look back to last November on the channel, I gave after-build feedback on many kits, ('The Good, the Bad & the Ugly') plus more recent ones too. But as I have said in some of the reviews, not all these kits are owned by me.
