I think one of the reasons this project was so protracted following your first video in 2020 was because of major developments that had occurred in the following months that likely directly affected or influenced its development. Particularly the discovery of *real* Mario 64 beta assets in the iQueue leak and the reverse-engineering of Mario 64's source code. I imagine they took the extra time to account for these developments to make it more accurate to the actual Spaceworld demo, very impressive work regardless of the inaccuracies here and there.

The coins actually look better in this than the retail version
that "yeah!" when mario gets a star sounds really similar to the "yeah!" from the original rayman upon beating a level.
It looks like your brain trying to recreate Mario 64 in a dream.
The fact that this is Open Source makes me want to learn the native language this was programmed in and get to freakin work

@@adrenaliner91 I mean, kinda, games are compiled so if you look at a rom file is just a bunch of MIPS assembly, but the actual games were made in C (perhaps with some manual assembly sprinkled in)
Mario slid a lot in the 2D games, but I guess they figured it didn't translate well into 3D.
I just love that people are putting together stuff like this!
7:05 FYI, you only need to throw Bowser into one bomb in the retail version during the initial and second fights; it's only the final fight where you need to throw him into the bomb 3 times. Great video, thanks for the share!

Huh, that just reminded me... the area where the Boos are seen in some trailers and B-Rolls, if it isn't the Courtyard, then it actually never appears in the playable demo at all! Curious, no?
There are also a few things I noticed... One is related to the slide, and the other to the cannon. The slide, you already talked about it, super nice! Honestly, I can imagine how tough it'd be to make a proper pathway given how little of it was shown.
Now, the thing about the cannon, I'm not so sure about it, but I think it let you fly around, as if you had the Wing Cap on? I think I saw one piece a footage of that, but I may need to double check.
About the new area in the b-roll, that's actually an earlier build from around August 1995. The ones with the old "POW" / "POWER" power meters are from that earlier build. The Shoshinkai demo was only a small, curated portion of what the game had to offer at the time. Source: The Cutting Room Floor / Prerelease subpage

Remember ? In July 1995? Some random kids rented a Mario 64 game but it it looked weird and everything was weird and only 20% is normal, it may have been a rom hack

I remember when the first Beta Revival project came about, and remembering how disappointing it was to see that mod canceled. It's great to know that with the tools and resources we have now, projects like these are much easier undertakings than they were 8-or-so years ago.

They sure made a lot of quality of life changes, but this is really cool.
It's a shame they reneged on replicating the beta walking animation/movement. It was in there on earlier versions, and that was the part I wanted to experience the most to be honest.

Yes, infact the entire hack relies on the assets from the Nintendo leak. The only things that were recreated was the HUD, the maps (textures were from the leak), skyboxes and paintings (they were found in a library called VisualDisk IIRC).
Not gonna lie, I love marios sound getting burned in this. xD It made me giggle for some reason.
He sounds more like the original Rayman in this version lol
First we got a beta mod for Ocarina of Time, now we got one for Mario 64... Wonder what's gonna be next. Maybe Majora's Mask, Kirby 64, or Starfox 64, one can hope.

You know the Miyamoto quote "A delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is bad forever?"
It doesn't always apply, sometimes it's better to take the model of releasing the beta versions before it's finalized as a proof of concept and proof that they can create something, and then just keep updating it over time with newer versions, which is how most modern games function. Patch notes, per say.
But that's what QA staff are for. To help bug test and give feedback on the game builds so the devs can tweak and polish things.
Of course, there have been cases where open beta demos of games have been released for the public to play and I think that is fine. In that context, the devs are openly acknowledging that it's a work in progress and want to garner consumer feedback.
But I feel the main reason why most modern games are released now and then given patches out later instead of waiting until it's done is all just to meet deadlines to please the corporate higher ups.

I understand their displeasure at not getting it quite right, but honestly. In true preservation fashion,
better release what we have than nothing. And in keeping with that. Brilliant decision to make it open source
That wowed me even more than the impressive effort already had, wish them nothing but the best.
