  • Triforce% is a hybrid RTA/TAS run of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time on an unmodified console and cartridge, meaning a live runner and TASBot cooperate to jointly play the game. Arbitrary Code Execution (ACE) is used to bring to life various beta and debug content cut from the final release of OoT, including assets and code left in the game cartridge. Today I'm playing a romhack version and exploring amazing beta & lore elements like the Unicorn Fountain, Overture of Sages, and more!

      Arbitrary Code Execution. Arbitrary Code, computer code that is undefined and results are unknown/Arbitrary is executed (the computer performs the actions instructed by the code). By manipulating and taking advantage of an exploit/logic loophole in the game, a person can create their own instructive code for the computer to run, modifying the RAM bits. In this case the user created code comes from button press signals on a controller port, which are pre programmed on another computer to send the controller inputs. A human sending machine code via N64 controller could write 4 bits per button press, or 1 N64/MIPS instruction every 6 button presses, a MIPS instruction is always 24bits. Each instruction is as basic as Add/subtract/multiply/dived/compare/write a number or start a premade process/function.

    I never thought I'd see an in-game Triforce. I knew you can do pretty much anything once you have ACE, but to stitch that much together on the fly, no matter how long it's been in the making, is mind-boggling.

    • @AkaiAzul
      @AkaiAzul ปีที่แล้ว +10

      It took a community to find ACE, then a small team of 1-2 dozen people over about 2.5 years to program a machine to rewrite data on the game on the fly, inputting about 480 commands a second over about a minute (or 28,000+ commands). Absolutely impressive.

      game crashes ...

    • @sareli.
      @sareli. ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Since these are not preexisting contents present in the cartridge and are inserted artificially using the ACE technique, these options need to be full programmed, otherwise the game would probably either crash, softlock, show a blank dialogue box or a random/glitch text, since it would try to access the "response" to these options and it would be "NULL".
      I think that an example of something similar is when you interact to some NPCs in Zelda Majora's Mask during the 4th day glitch. The game tries to get the dialogue for the current day, but since there isn't dialogues to 4th day, some strange things happen.

    I understand ACE enough to grasp the concept of activating unused assets and actors, and I can even get behind creating custom text and new animations in existing assets... but it just absolutely blows my mind that they somehow created an entirely new map, two comparatively highly detailed characters with animations, _textures_ for those characters and even something that looks to be a custom cel-shader (???)... by simply having the TASbot make Link crouch and wiggle around for a few seconds in one spot!! How, just HOW?! Absolute wizardry and one of the greatest things to happen to OoT ever since its creation! I seriously hope some of the original staff members see this.

    This takes me back to those old wind waker action replay vids I used to watch, but it was a demo or something so there were strange colorful rooms and cubic areas you'd never see in the final game. I might as well add that this also gives me some major dream nostalgia, growing up with zelda games have led me to experience dozens of lucid dreams where I would explore parts of a game that never existed. I've had these with ocarina of time, botw and my latest one was twilight princess about 2 years ago, after revisiting the game one night. I remember just exploring the boundaries of hyrule, past the gerudo region, and into limitless villages and towns through some kind of glitch, while avoiding a giant dark link that was just chasing me all through the dream, like a hidden boss unlocked through the glitch. Very vivid and surreal. I used to have tons of exploration dreams in lost woods from oot, but it's been over a decade since then.. I think I also had one with majora's mask as a kid.

    Such a cool mod. Watch the archive and explanation video of how it all works. Would love to have a pre-patched rom for archiving purposes and to have as an ad-on celebration ROM to go along with the actual game to play back to back. Wish they would release an IPS patch like patches in the past for other mods to make it as free from litigation as possible.

    • @Sauraen
      @Sauraen ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The biggest reason we didn't release an IPS patch is because the patch would have had to contain Nintendo copyrighted data like the BotW character models. So, they could still take down the patch. There are some other technical reasons too, like the fact that our code works on console but has stability problems on emulators. So instead, we released all the source code and assets we made for the project (not including any Nintendo copyrighted data), and people can compile a version of it themselves.

    Looks remarkable to watch many features that could never been seen. Amazing to see the unicorn fountain, makes me wonder if that's the same model from the beta or it was model fan made. Looking at the Triforce chamber, looks almost the original, even when the Triforce come out, I was thinking about the music from the link to the past. But why you have to talk over when Link was speaking. I was wondering what would he sounds like in that tone of voice.

      Basically the inputs done from the bot inject its own code and causes all this to be possible. Yeah i dont think the previous guy could be less clear. No hate. I just dont know how importing the models worked with the botw part. Models are not code. Unless I missed something about the bot injecting all that too

    • @MNGoldenEagle
      @MNGoldenEagle ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@TNephilim Basically the way that worked was TASBot injected the models into memory as well as the necessary code to render them. There were a lot of tricks used to recreate the physics and cel shading, but it was all accomplished with the actual N64 hardware. The voice acting lines were effectively "streamed" (kinda similar to how CDs work actually).

      The segment involving beating the Running Man was an urban legend which we brought to life using Arbitrary Code Execution. The battle was not cut content. The only part of the Running Man segment which was real beta content was the giant magenta rupee.
