      Wealth is a GREAT insulator from the effects of stupidity or lack of common sense. They can just spend their way out of their dumbass decisions and make it someone else's problem. But most REAL wealthy people were born with the $ chromosome or get lucky with stupid ideas and bad decisions. A few REALLY earn it through hard work, but at least half of them would be eligible for a lifetime membership at Club Fed if we actually knew how they got there.
      But i'm not saying they're dumber than the consumers and fetuses who fall for their scams either.

    Plane crash survivor here. I'm incredibly grateful I put my head down. Not only did it contribute to the "survivor" part of being a plane crash survivor, but it also helped shield my 15-month-old daughter during impact. She was traveling in my lap. She, too survived. • @DaveTexas
      @DaveTexas 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +24

      Exactly! That experiment really eased my mind about flying…or rather about an unexpected lack of flying… The truth is that planes very, very rarely "crash." They might have hard landings or lose some landing gear, but it’s so totally unlikely that you’ll be on a plane that actually crashes. And if your plane does lose its wings or encounters an unexpected object like a mountain, the likelihood of survival is very low no matter how you brace.

    • @openmilhouse
      @openmilhouse 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@DaveTexasvery true, people don’t understand how uncommon a plane crash is. Sure we hear about what seems like quite a few crashes each year, but there are thousands of flights per day, millions per year. The chance of you being in a plane crash is significantly lower than you getting into an accident on your way to work

      is not hard to think a little bit to understand that airliners spend a whole lot money to find the safest mesures. If they say something, don't argue, just listen and follow their direction. • @ellagrant6190
    @ellagrant6190 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +893

    Not to mention, if that position was designed to kill you, that could be proved and if it was proved, that would be multiple lawsuits FAR, FAR bigger than anything we have seen. Multiple airlines would be sued into oblivion and multiple people responsible for those policies would go to jail. The airlines would be risking far more with a position designed to kill you.

    • @Person01234

      in the US in the modern day this kind of isn't true. These things are factored in to cost assessments and most likely the airlines would face a penalty that is less than the money they saved from doing the thing, and nobody in any position of real power would spend a day in jail.
      However, the fact that it hasn't actually been claimed by anyone of any repute (not just government/media-anointed "experts", but really ANYONE with a reputation in biology or crash investigation) let alone proven in the decades of commercial air travel and that it just popped up as some dumbass aspect of the US political culture war a few years ago really tells me all I need to know about it's veracity.

    A long time ago, my husband was on a flight and the captain refused to take off. It was a small plane, so he came into the cabin and apologized for the delay. He said it was going to be a while because of the paperwork, that it was something easy enough to fix, but he will not fly until it will be taken care of. Safe to say passengers (my husband included) where happy to wait. So, yes, if the captain feels that is not safe, they just don't fly. BTW, congrats on your promotion.

    Influencers are the main danger in the modern world wherever you look, I'm a mountaineer and they're single handedly putting many lives at risk encouraging people to take on routes beyond their skillset, it's very worrying how big an influence they can be and how many people listen to them. Mainntenance here:
    The oxygen masks and "PSU" (passenger service units) get looked over every C-check.
    The masks get their oxygen from "oxygen generators" or "candles" that get activated when you give a strong jerk to the strings that deploy with the masks.
    Typical arrangement is 3 masks (seats) per candle.
    The candles have a shelf life. They get recycled or otherwise disposed regularly.

    30 years of commercially flying here: I had a crew unintentionally forgetting to disarm a slide on arrival and the slide fired. For the return flight, as there was no replacement slide at that airport, we had to reduce the amount of passengers by 50! That was an Airbus 320. So, the requirement to be able to get your passengers out within 90 seconds with half of the emergency exits (if memory serves me right) was still given. It is all in the minimum equipment list, which is approved by the authorities. Let me conclude by saying there is no industrie in the world that has learned more from its accidents than airlines!

    I was on a plane where the flaps failed. I learned that same day what flaps are for. If we didn’t listen to the flight crew, I believe that there would be a few injuries on the flight. Especially spinal injuries. Our necks are not created to bounce back and forth and side to side with extreme force. The flight attendants also told us to raise our seatbelt as high as possible and buckle up tight. Had anyone not done that, it too would have caused an injury of some sort. The landing that day was extremely hard and fast and my waist had a few bruises from the seatbelt but the pilots did an amazing job with landing safely and keeping the people calm. They acted as if it was a simple problem, they deal with every day. I don’t know how serious it really was because the crew were so calm and knowledgeable.

      Having seen a flight attendant freak out when a flight I was on had to go back to the airport after takeoff because a light indicated that a baggage door might be open, I sure agree. I wasn't too anxious until she answered a passenger's little joke with "No! No this doesn't happen all the time!" in a shaky voice. You don't want to see an F/A seem scared! That passenger looked at me from across the aisle, and we shared looks of "UH OH." We were ok, but I hope she found a different career. There was a pile of luggage on the apron where it meets the taxiway, btw.

      Former flight attendant here. In the beginning of my career if I got pushback I would try to politely, patiently, succinctly explain policies and procedures---we weren't there to order people around or make things difficult (yes, I know, *some* f/a's aren't nice)---it's about *safety.* People appreciated the explanation and usually complied without much fuss. As time went on, people no longer listened, gave a bunch of attitude and did whatever the heck they wanted anyway. Eventually, it was hard to care anymore. It seemed to me people just wanted to complain/be miserable. I know flying isn't particularly pleasant (*lots* of reasons for that) but still I wish people appreciated the miracle of flight and had some idea what it takes to operate a single flight. It takes the coordination of many people doing various difficult and often complicated jobs, working under various conditions and time constraints, to make even one flight happen. Multiply that by hundreds of flights a day. It's not like getting on a Greyhound bus.
      I left flying for various reasons and I do miss a lot of things about the job, but I don't miss the crazies and as the pilot here says those lacking "all common sense." (I can't believe some of the behavior I see on TH-cam.) I do want to add that *most* people were not a problem, and I met some truly fabulous folks (it's just that the nasty ones kinda stick with ya).
      In the military the air crew greet their passengers with "Sit down, shut the fuck up and don't touch nothin'."😂

    As an actual aviation maintenance tech, that second tiktok really made me angry. What a huge pack of lies. We check EVERYTHING on that plane at set intervals determined by the FAA and each manufacturer/buyer (airline/cargo company/etc). The emergency oxygen system has expiration dates, as does every piece of emergency equipment. Maintenance swaps them out for new if one expires. Yes. We keep track. And deferrals are only allowed for certain items, and many have restrictions set in, which are all determined for safety reasons. I'm. a frequent flyer but I ALWAYS follow the safety instructions/video. Muscle memory plays a part too; many people can't get out of their seats because they are busy pressing the seat belt release; it's lift and separate. When you are stressed, you won't necessarily figure that out.
    Thank you for keeping us protected from influencers.

    Avionics technician here. I'm responsible for the electrical, computer and communication systems on planes. Not sure what part of 14 CFR governs the oxygen mask deployment on airliners but: Every plane has an interval at which certain inspections are *required* to be performed. That's what the alphabetical checks are. C check is every 2 years or so, A check is every 400-600 flight hours, etc. At regular intervals the oxygen mask deployment system gets tested. We make sure they manually deploy via the control in the cockpit and also automatically by connecting a pneumatic test set to the planes pitot/static sensors to simulate a certain altitude at which the masks are observed to deploy or not deploy. Where I work it's mandatory that our quality control inspector is present when this test is performed because it's safety critical. If they don't deploy the problem is either fixed or the jet isn't allowed to leave until it's corrected. We also verify oxygen flow rate and that the masks themselves aren't broken. Like little plastic pieces and what not.
    Wall of text I know. Point being, she is completely wrong. Just about any and everything you can imagine and more is regularly inspected/tested for proper working condition. ESPECIALLY anything to do with flight safety or emergency systems.

    A sign of our times, people talking out of their butts, or intentionally spreading misinformation for clout. Thanks for making videos like this, and being always so professional!
    I´m a biologist, so here are my two cents: the spine is a collection of vertebrae, anyone that has suffered even a hard fall or has been hit by a car knows that your spine compresses, vertebrae can be smashed together or be fractured, and your spinal cord can be pinched or even severed. In the scenario Matt talks so confidently incorrectly about, your cervical vertebrae could be compressed against the base of your skull (which is very very hard in comparison) if you have braced yourself and kept your head down. You'll probably have some neck issues, but it beats the alternative of smashing your face against the seat before you and eating your own teeth... really, these people need to be held accountable.

      But the pilots and flight attendants haven't studied the subject matter of crash survival. They're just telling you what they're required to tell you.
      People like to watch channels like this and think being a pilot qualifies what is being said, but they're often talking about things that have nothing to do with the pilot.
      I'm not saying they don't know what they're talking about but being a pilot doesn't mean they would know.
      Lots of instructors I've had can tell you what they learned, but have no clue if something is true or not, but will argue with people who've actually tried things and found the explanation to be wrong. A lot know what airspeed to fly on approach and the correct attitude and it works. But they wouldn't be able to work out how to do things differently. They just do what they were taught and nothing else.
      Be careful thinking pilots are experts, especially be suspicious of those that act as if they are.

    In forty four years of rescue work, I have only ever seen a spine driven into a skull once. That person had jumped from the 22nd floor of a tower block and landed feet first, they collapsed and the impact on his pelvis and coccyx drove the spine up. The damage was severe but not immediately fatal, he was making noises and tried to get help. The person who called 999 was distraught and vomiting. He didn't make it and I was at his post mortem the following day. He took a few hours to finally die, which was a blessing as there wasn't much of him that had no damage. 42 years later I can still remember the whole thing clearly, including the smell as he drunk a bottle of whiskey just before he jumped.

    Not only does having the seat in the upright position give the person behind you more room to escape in an emergency (especially if it's a tall or obese person behind you), but it's also harder for you to get up in a reclined position during an emergency (especially in a compact space with seats on both sides), and much easier for you to inadvertently slide out of your seat on the force of impact when in a reclined position (rather than being restrained by the ninety-degree angle of the back of the seat and seatbelt in the upright position).

    If she was actually a flight attendant she would know better. As some who ACTUALLY went through AA Flight Attendant Training earlier this year, one of the first things they teach you is about the oxygen system and the fact that it DOES NOT use a tank for passengers, it’s a chemical reaction and the oxygen generator gets hot while creating oxygen for you to breathe. I simply think she bought the scarf that AA Flight Attendants wear threw on a “uniform” (that doesn’t even look like the one our female colleagues wear) and started spewing information that she got second hand or made up. It makes us actual flight attendants look bad

      Passenger oxygen supply via bottles is a factory option on some aircraft. e.g. the Boeing 777. Certainly older aircraft such as the 747-400 had bottles only. Having said that, the so-called flight attendant is an idiot. Of course the slide was fixed and it would probably have been fixed within one flight day. The slide defect would have been deferred depending on number of passengers. If the flights were overwater, then the restrictions would have been greater.

    • @MoA-Reload...
      @MoA-Reload... 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I worked fast craft ferries for years and assisted with training. One of our first officers was also the regions head TO. He had a really good "ice breaker" speech for newbie crews starting training. It was along the lines of "you're not just here to pull pints, serve coffees and sell stuff in the gift shop. That's not even your primary job role. If that was all that was needed from you the company would fill that ship with vending machines and not bother with the expense of cabin crew. Your job is to save lives if/when things go wrong. If you think this job is going to be like Starbucks at sea then maybe you should leave now before wasting our and your own time". By the time we'd get the new starts, they'd already had 2 days of "customer service" training so that was our way to make it clear THIS is what the job actually was and it was time to really pay attention.
      He's not wrong either. Training cabin crew even back when I was working there cost thousands but if they didn't pass, they were bounced even after investing that much money into them. As for recurring training, MCA regs for ship crew have certifications for some things and you'd have to recertify to keep the qualification. The ships would have regular drills and a log of crew performance was kept. Any individual crew member that failed in those drills often enough would be thrown shore side until retraining could be arranged or if it was bad enough, lose their job and if it's the ships master giving you the boot, they don't even have to go through the warnings process with HR.
      Ships in British waters found in breach of regs can have massive fines brought down on the owner/operator and if it's a big enough breach, they can lose their licences to operate at all and have all their routes shut down.

      I have heart pilots say: "The flight attendants first and most important job is to assure the safety of this flight and its passengers and crew. It's not to get you drinks or a snack, though they will be happy to do so when their primary job has been attended to, and it's safe to do so." Good to hear that i think.

      That's not correct. There's more money in a lifetime crippling injury than a wrongful death. You have to consider the expenses for care and misery of every minute of everyday of a life-time injury and the impact of wheeling the injured person into court. A person suffering every minute for the rest of their life gets more than a dead person.

      As an actual lawyer who has handled both types of cases--inter vivos "injuries" and wrongful death--let me give you the correct answer: it depends. It depends on damages and the level of culpability of the defendant. And there are also many state laws preventing non-dependents and/or non-citizen plaintiffs from bringing wrongful death lawsuits.
