    Everytime you redo them, I'm like "NOOOO" because I love them so much.
    But it's such a glowup. The Fire line looks SO much better, I'd say especially Quexcell. And the Water line translates the music theme through its design much more than before.
    I also get what you say about anthropomorphic features too, starters are the Pokémon who are the closest to us... so they should look like us the most.

    • @bumberquest3031
      @bumberquest3031 3 ปีที่แล้ว +42

      this is personal preference but I think you need to make sure not to cross the line of anthropomorphic to the point where most of their proportions are human like, I think that's why the gen 8 starters were poorly received and a lot of people found them uncomfortable.

    i still wish bathygigas was called orcaestra.
    will say i like the new design a lot more, i feel like starters should have the most expressive faces and forelimbs due to being the focus of most of the animations.
    quexcell is much better, the pupil makes it much more empathetic.

      @tompotter8703 3 ปีที่แล้ว +39

      Hmmm, having said Orch”A”estra out loud, it doesn’t roll of the tongue as well, especially with the design being more based on Sperm Whales than Orcas. I do agree on the new designs though.

      @@tompotter8703 I assumed it was pronounced "Orch-ay-stra" which allows for fluidity between syllables. I don't particularly like the name "Bathygigas" personally, because A) Regigas, B) Bathy isn't a term that inspires particular confidence, as if it were named rubber-duckygigas or splashygigas. Idk there's some childish charm there which doesnt quite fit with that stage in the evolution and C) the name Betty (which i find off-putting). Obviously you can contest these points, but those are just my opinions on the name.

    While there were improvements in Bathygigas, I do feel the design is slightly busy and off-balance. I'd recommend trying to render the same design a few more times to see if there's a way to keep the improvements but make the design a little more concise. I look at Quetzillian and I get it, the emotion of the character, but with Bathygigas the point seems muddled behind minor errors. I love the work you do and the art you make is miles ahead of mine, but I think that, knowing what you can do, Bathygigas 2.0 could use a little more work to be as great as the others.

    • @alseanunca681
      @alseanunca681 3 ปีที่แล้ว +45

      I agree to this. The design is too "heavy" on one side. The original pose with the new features might fix that. Or finding a way to increase the tail's length/weight to make it more equal.

      @@alseanunca681 Definitely the weight - I think keeping the way the body tapers in the original and connecting that bubble dorsal fin to the front bubble would help with balancing it. It kinda looks like if its fins weren't there it'd keel over sideways. It also just looks a bit stubby and like its size could be conveyed better. The concept is a lot more solidified in this iteration though, and the design process is just that - a process.

    I really like the updates. However, something about the water last stage bugs me a bit: a trainer doesn't interact with that design. Let me be clear, something that is really appealing about some designs is the fantasy to ride or fight among your Pokemon. Bathygigas feels like it should be left alone instead of being close to its trainer.
    Hope this made sense to you.
    Great work!!

    • @BunsGlazing768

    • @bugjams
      @bugjams 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I dunno, I feel the previous design looked less appealing to ride on, with that random second dorsal fin, and the fact that its huge head would get in the way. Unless what you're saying is that, personality-wise, it seemed more like a "loner" Pokemon? Maybe, but like he said, you _should_ feel like you're bonding with your starter Pokemon more than any other party member.

    • @trevsoda
      @trevsoda 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I definitely agree with this. I feel like it needs to be smaller somehow? like, i know it's a whale but every other starter is more or less human-sized - i think that's an important part of the appeal of a starter pokemon.

    I LOVE Quetzillian's new pose, much more dynamic I think. Gastronaut looks great, like its ready for battle and about to light some mons up with its cannon. Bathygigas... I'll be honest as much as I love this improvement its still not quite to my taste, the fins don't feel like they can bend properly. Honestly I think its just a challenge to design whale mon in general. I think its because we're already primed to think of them as massive, so adding more features onto them overwhelms us, like how we can't properly comprehend the true size of the earth and the sun. Plus their streamlined shape doesn't lend very well to adding on lots of new features, probably why Wailmer and Wailord both keep their designs simple.

    Watching you reassess your designs is one of my favourite parts of your Mazah work! This video in particular is a great showcase of how an artist’s ‘style’ is about more than just medium choice, anatomy, and rendering. Even without significantly altering Gastronaut and Quetzillian’s anatomy or proportions, you’ve made them more compelling and dynamic through pose and expression; it’s really neat to see how it’s possible to work to a house style or brief (such as Pokémon’s silhouette and design traditions) without compromising a design that you’re already happy with.
    With Quetzillian especially - what is truer to Pokémon’s legacy than having to condense an ambitious design to ensure that it doesn’t break anything? Well done!

    I think I agree with some people about Bathygigas losing its guitar motif, especially after the amazing Gmax form, but I understand you're going for Beluga. If it was an Orca, the fin would contribute greatly to the guitar shape.
    If I could just add one more constructive piece of criticism, though, it would be nice if Quetzillian stayed a winged serpent. Adding legs turns him into yet another flame bird. We already have Moltres, Blaziken, Flametalon, Ho-Oh, Oricorio, but we don't have any flame serpents. I think you would still be able to to keep the bold pose, minus the legs, by creating a thicker trunk that wraps around in the same fashion as the tail.

    Maybe you should switch the fins, make the hind fins be physical and the front fins made out of bubbles, that way it could extend and shape those whatever way it wants, maybe having a more arm like appearance on land while turning into fins while in water.

    I love your designs but I think you could really tell more about the Pokémon with their abilities. A lot of Pokémon strengths are from their abilities and more creative picks would be cool. For gastronaught I would have picked weak armor because of its strong defensive stat, allowing it to exchange that for speed. For Quetzillian could have levitate which makes sense because of its wings but also makes it a possible better alternative to Hydreigon, making it immune to its main weakness. Finally, I would give Bathygigas liquid voice which would go along great with its sound based design and making it a super strong, sound based pokemon. This is just a recommendation but I think you can really tell a lot about a pokemon by its ability and It would help people understand them better.

    I agree that Quexcell's original round wings didn't do much for its silhouette, but I think they actually really work with the original Quetzillian render... The 'mon has quite a bit of eye-catching parts to it - a long and flaming tail, swooping feathers in very bold complementary colours, large headdress, swirled pauldrons.. The straight edges of the original wings also harmonized really nicely with the upper part of the headdress, and emphasized the broadness of the wings in a way that distinguished them from the rest of the design. But all in all, Quetzillian is still a wicked good design, definitely one of my favourites from this region

    Your work is astoundingly thoughtful and teaches me new insight!
    To me, Bathygigas looks overdesigned to the extent of resembling the Hoenn Legendaries. Maybe choosing between the headphones and speakers symbolism would help clarify the theme without being over-the-top?

    Hi, I honestly am in love with these designs and am excited by the possibility of this region become a full fledged game, however I want to talk about stats today. All of your starter Pokémon are special attackers which isn’t necessarily a bad thing but I think it would be more balanced it quetzillian was a physical attacker, being also based off a dancer could also relate it to being a warrior as the mayan warriors would also preform dances. So yeah, I believe that would be pretty neeto

    I absolutely love the changes made to Bathygigas. The change to its bubbles as headphones and a speaker fits so perfectly with the mid evolution's headphones. Basically going from using them to block out others and instead flipping them around to share its music with the world. Love it!

    I don't understand how you can constantly improve so much. When I see the original designs I think they are a perfect fit, and then... you just make them more perfect. It must suck as an artist to put a project down/be satisfied with past work when you have probably outgrown it soon after you are done. That's what I have heard some people into art say, and seeing you redesign I think I get a decent sense of that lol.

    i loved the changes you made! I do think bathygigas looks a bit derpy now though. Something about that original pose and the stripes down the side made it flow really nicely. The shape of its head and mouth were a lot more whale-like and appealing imo. That being said, the speaker idea is interesting!

  • @crge2673
    @crge2673 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Ash would definitely have a quexcell and it would jump into a big attack and ash would do that thing where he stands in front of it then quexcell would push him out the way and evolve during that attack.

    I don't really care for the new bathygigas design, but I think the main thing that makes it not great is how fat the belly is. It completely changes the shape and the proportions, making it look fat and swollen, rather than just curving upwards. I think the combination of the pink parts on the front fins and the bubble back fins makes it look too terrestrial as well, like it's ready to stand on all fours when it gets out of the water.

    can't help imagining the game concept with these pokemon starters and the plot around them. With the awesome themes you gave them, I think it would be cool if throughout the journey, your own pokemon were to challenge you with their own ideals. like based on the starter you chose, scripted events would happen to create tension between the two of you. Like, quetzalil throwing itself into danger and being pompous, the water starter not listening to your commands. Throughout the journey you both would need to grow and change together and once you both come together, stronger than ever, your starter evolves into the final form. I think it'd be pretty great and cool narrative to follow

    I love the new poses for Quexcell and Quetzillian, they really sell the vibe the pokemon are going for. I also think it's smart how you anthropomorphized Bathygigas, not just making it a whale on a humanoid body, but just giving it some humanoid features. If this was a real game, I'd have a hard time picking between the water and fire starters!
    Also, I think a cool pokemon you could add to your pokedex would be a Day of the Dead parrot. I think a macaw design would look really cool! You could even make it part of the first gym leaders team.
    Anyway, I can't wait to see your designs and ideas develop into something amazing!

    You did a great job making 3 starters that i like equally. Honestly, if i was playing this game, i wouldnt know which one to choose. Gastronaut is sort of Cthulhu-ey and also a grass type (i love grass types, my pfp is a Shroomish), Bathygigas is big and bulky like Torterra (my favorite starter-again, grass types) and…Quetzillian is good. Im not a huge fan of fire types but jeez that pokemon is magnificent. As it should be. Anyway great job and i cant wait for more Mazah and Apoctober content :>

    I think this new Bathygigas is a great improvement of the old design, but for me it still lacks something, perhaps it needs more complexity or a more "powerful" feel to it, I personally prefer the more anthropomorphic designs, but it surely doesn't need to be fully human shaped to be a good starter

  • @TwilightWyvern

    Honestly after seeing your redesign of the water starters i think they're my favorites you've done so far. If these were to ever to be used in a game id definitely pick them! Especially since as someone who is neurodivergent i can relate so much to the theme of communication and the lack there of.

    I think the entire line of Porsite might be some of my favorite fakemon I've ever seen. I thought it could do with some more pokemon stylized characteristics, as it still looks a little out of place to me, but nonetheless, I would immediately pick that over any other starter in a heartbeat. It is the perfect amount of seamless and detailed, while also being so freaking cute and seemingly dangerous, but in a gentle giant kind of way. I've never been a huge fan of water type pokemon, but this kind of design would 100% change that for me. Amazing job to you, and thank you for your amazing content!

    I really love all of these new redesigns, and I think they look a lot more like real Pokémon now. You have definitely grown, and these pieces are a perfect demonstration of that. I think the only thing I would change is the fire line. I really love the idea of a small, full of itself little creature, turning into a god that thinks everyone is equal, but I don't think that the middle stage reflects that idea very well. It feels like there is no actual transition from its mindset, and rather that the final stage and the middle stage are not related at all in that sense. Really great though, keep it up!
