Great you are finally doing tier rankings, David Bowie is a very good choice for this. My favourite album of his is Ziggy Stardust & Space Oddity is my favourite song of his!
Let's Dance was the only Bowie album I was able to listen to during an 18-month spell teaching in India. It holds a special place in my heart as a result. So now my pleasant task is to listen to every album you rank higher to build up an at least equally positive association!
What a superb video and an excellent and objective presentation of the brilliance of David Bowie. I could not argue with your assessments and it still brings a tear to my eye when I think of the brilliance of the man. All the very best. Dave✅✅
Hi Larry, I just came across your rating and I agree with you, for the most part. I am SO glad you ranked Blackstar so high.I think it is incredible and I do not find it depressing at all. Wonderous avant garde jazz. I rate Heros higher than you. I also really love Diamond Dogs. I love how simple it is, saxophone, piano and Bowie's voice is just SO good on that album. I have Ziggy Stardust on CD and I play it going back and forth to work. It revives me. I feel David Bowie is the Mozart of my time. He created so many interesting, complex sounds, no one else like him. Cheers!
Wow, this is very, very close to my ranking. I would put Hunky Dory as S tier. I have same top 5 but the order changes by the day. I listen to the entire discography chronologically once a year and new favorites always emerge. It is shocking to see the late career triumph of Blackstar emerge after some of the low points in the 80s and 90s.
Thanks, really enjoyed your thoughts. This would be very similar to what I think. I have to admit The Tonight album would be higher for me, I guess most people don't like it, but I have a real soft spot for it. So for me its an A.
Really liked this sort of video. Did you create that tier diagram or download it? my tiering would be slightly different but not far off although i don't know the 90s albums very well at all. Great stuff Larry
Yes, very interesting ratings system, and see comment re; the 1990's videos (from yours truly). Also I wish you the best of luck with your treatments (but I was too overwhelmed to comment on your other video. I'm a bit of a shy guy.).
I remember when you were ranking David Bowie albums and ,,Hunky Dory" was at 3rd or 4th place, it kinda fell down after some time as I see 🙂 but his discography is very great, hard to choose which ones are better than other ones 👍
Love most of Bowie's records...so much quality output, a true musical chameleon genius and talent...here's my ranking but disclaimer, my top 4 fluctuates depending on my mood or situation I'm in when listening - 1. Hunky Dory 2. Ziggy Stardust 3. Man Who Sold the World 4. Station to Station 5. Let's Dance 6. Aladdin Sane 7. Young Americans 9. Lodger 10. Low 11. Scary Monsters... 12. Diamond Dogs 13. Black Star 14. Heroes
Some of these albums are in the Brilliant Adventures box set. So what does that mean?! Well, It means that these particular albums are from D.B's most experimental time period of 1992 - 2001. Here's what they say about the box: "BRILLIANT ADVENTURE (1992 - 2001) is an eleven CD box. The collection is named after the Koto led instrumental penultimate track from the ‘hours...’ album. The box set include newly remastered versions, with input from the original producers and collaborators, of some of Bowie’s most underrated and experimental material: BLACK TIE WHITE NOISE, THE BUDDHA OF SUBURBIA (available on vinyl for the first time in nearly 30 years), 1.OUTSIDE, EARTHLING and ‘hours…’ along with the expanded live album BBC RADIO THEATRE, LONDON, JUNE 27, 2000, the non-album / alternative version / B-sides and soundtrack music compilation RE:CALL 5 and the legendary previously unreleased TOY "
This is a solid list Larry. Bowie is a top fav artist of mine along with Zeppelin,The Stones,The Beatles and Elton John….. you don’t talk much about Elton John? His 70’s output is amazing. Anyways, I agree with your entire Bowie tier list. However I am a big fan of Tonight and Never Let Me Down…..so those would be higher for me but I do understand fans not liking those two albums as much….they are very 80’s but I appreciate the positive vibe of them. I’ve even come to like Pin Ups! An album I didn’t like much when I first purchased it back in the 80’s. I was lucky enough to see David three times live. In 83/87 and in 2004 on his last tour. All three shows in Toronto and all l three shows were incredible! Cheers
David Bowie was super talented Larry but a little outside the box for me,the only album of his I owned was Diamond Dogs,a great album and I love the line in Diamond Dogs, the elevator's broke so he slides down a rope which I thought was brilliant,he was one of the greats for sure. Bob
New subscriber. I have the 5 cd boxsets covering 1969 to 2001. Hopeing they release a final one to complete his discog. Station to station, Low, Heroes and ziggy would be my s tier.
Heh--I knew what your #1 choice was going to be. Just the other night I was watching the 1976 Nicolas Roeg version of The Man Who Fell to Earth, one of my favorite films, starring . . . David Bowie. Have yet to hear a single David Bowie album, though.
Nice list. I can’t remember if you included “black tie white noise”. That and “never let you down” would be D for me. I’m one who really likes “Pinups”- it’s down to earth sound and earthy production. It would be S for me, along with “Ziggy”, “scary monsters” “alladin sane” and “low”. Others down a bit. I also like “hours” but it would be A
Some funny ideas in comments....hunky,ziggy,diamond,aladdin are highly rated by experts.Hunky might have couple fillers but quicksand, life on mars,oh you pretty things, changes should ensure S tier, theyre some of his most iconic songs.
My top Bowie (10-7 are A, and 6-1 are S): 10. The Man Who Sold The World 9. Diamond Dogs 8. Aladdin Sane 7. Hunky Dory 6. Ziggy Stardust 5. Scary Monsters 4. …Heroes… 3. Station To Station 2. Lodger (not a common opinion but I love it) 1. Low
I think I would have 3 tiers for DB: G for genius, then A and B. Great ranking. I would have bumped Hunky Dory and Heroes up a level and the C level up to B and that's about it.
I have a greater appreciation for The Man Who Sold The World and Lodger these days. I'll submit a top ten. 10. Diamond Dogs 9. Heroes 8. Scary Monsters 7. Low 6. The Man Who Sold The World 5. Station To Station 4. Lodger 3. Aladdin Sane 2. Hunky Dory 1. Ziggy Stardust...
Great list, glad to see Scary monsters, Lodger and Next day getting some appreciation, agree with Blackstar being up there although not quite sure I would put in No. 1. Only disagreements: would swap Ziggy with Hunky Dory, and Earthling for would me would be last place! The album Tonight also for my money gets too much hate, Loving the alien and Blue Jean are great songs.
Rebel Rebel/ Larry Geeee!!🙀 Er, Stage. Love that. Live but...its a great overview. I realy respect his writing talent esp w/ Eno and Iggy are out of this world.
Nice list for me. Let's dance tonight, and pin ups would be bottom . Otherwise, it's very similar, I think , I agree with 1.Outside the segues are annoying and earthling I think is underrated.

The Tier list concept is very good
I like the tier style format. Ziggy Stardust is my number one. Great video Larry.
Great you are finally doing tier rankings, David Bowie is a very good choice for this.

Thank you for doing this! I LOVE BOWIE and wanna see what you have to say.💗

Glad to see Blackstar as your fav, its a true masterpiece and really impressive that he made such a good album during his time of dying
Excellent tier list and video! 👍xxx.
Thanks so much! 😊
Good tier ranking Larry! As far as I am concerned, you are S tier as well but just behind Ziggy Stardust🤩
I enjoyed this Larry..interesting watching your process…look forward to Zappa..
Thanks 👍
David Bowie's 1967 debut is S Tier for me it's my favorite album 👍 David Bowie is legend
My Olympic awards for D Bowie Gold 🏅 - Station 🚉 To Station 🚉 Silver 🥈 - Low Bronze 🥉 Scary Monsters

Completely agree self-titled 2 is underrated!

These are fun, Larry.😊
That's funny, "Andy Warhol" is probably my favorite song on Hunky Dory. That album might be my #1
I enjoyed the video. Diamond Dogs is my all-time favorite
Thanks, really enjoyed your thoughts. This would be very similar to what I think. I have to admit The Tonight album would be higher for me, I guess most people don't like it, but I have a real soft spot for it. So for me its an A.

I’ve Been Waiting For You is one of my favorite Neil Young songs. I need to hear Bowie’s cover
New subscriber. I have the 5 cd boxsets covering 1969 to 2001. Hopeing they release a final one to complete his discog. Station to station, Low, Heroes and ziggy would be my s tier.
I am sure they will, those box sets are the best!

Black Star is great. When I first heard it, it sounded like a mixture of Gong and Scott Walker, two of my favorites.
Ok so, not the most popular picks but my S tier LPs: Honkey Dory, Ziggy, Young Americans and Station to Station, with Aladdin Sane a high A.
Great list

I have only 3 albums, although i know some more. So it is easy for me to rank my top 3:
1. Scary Monsters
2. Let's Dance
3. Heroes
If I did a Zappa tier list, all the 60s albums would be in the S tier
I have a greater appreciation for The Man Who Sold The World and Lodger these days. I'll submit a top ten.
10. Diamond Dogs
9. Heroes
8. Scary Monsters
7. Low
6. The Man Who Sold The World

2. Hunky Dory
1. Ziggy Stardust...
Hi Larry i love so much david bowie albums but my favorite at the moment are hunky dory, diamond dogs and station to station 🤘✌️
Earthling and Heathen are S for me
Great list, glad to see Scary monsters, Lodger and Next day getting some appreciation, agree with Blackstar being up there although not quite sure I would put in No. 1. Cat People Soundtrack duet putting out the fire with Giorgio moroder is outstanding also
I might have to do this for Pink Floyd and Iron Maiden
Rebel Rebel/ Larry Geeee!!🙀 Er, Stage. Love that. Live but...its a great overview. I realy respect his writing talent esp w/ Eno and Iggy are out of this world.
Blackstar number 1 for me too
very nice to see scary monsters in 3rd place
Interesting. Comparing this tier ranking with your McCartney ranking, an argument might be made that you prefer Bowie more. Any thoughts?
Nope.... overall McCartney is my favorite artist.
Pauls peak was in the Beatles, while Bowie always was a solo artist. Makes totally sense that Bowie has more stronger albums
"Happy trees."
All his 70s albums are S tier except Pin Ups which would C for me.
Nice list for me. Let's dance tonight, and pin ups would be bottom .
Otherwise, it's very similar, I think , I agree with 1.Outside the segues are annoying and earthling I think is underrated.
No D!😱
