The Stately Tudor - EXTREME DIY Home Renovation Start To Finish

  • It has been one year since we started our "Stately Tudor" project and it's finally done! Watch this video to see all the before and after shots of our extreme DIY home remodel. The Stately Tudor was by FAR our biggest DIY project yet. We knew when we bought this home that it would be a home we live in for many years. Because of this, we took extra time with each detail and transformed the home into exactly what we were hoping for! We wanted to bring back in a lot of the "Old-world" character that Tudor houses often have. We absolutely love how it all came together!

I would highly recommend putting a fence up around the pool to keep your kids safe when playing out in the yard. Just one less thing to worry about when coming to your kids safety

You guys are amazing. Your floors are fabulous. Great job on them. My husband and I use to do a lot of building and remodel, but, never to this extent. Sarah, when I saw you doing all the heavy lifting with the rocks and blocks, I said to myself, " that girl's got game". Continued good vibes and prayers for you and your sweet family. I'm 77 now and can no longer do this type of work but I can sure appreciate what you are doing.

Something we did for our pool that I'm SUPER happy about is installing the UltraUV by Paramount. It's a blue light that kills bacteria (including cryptosporidium) and makes it so you can use a fraction of the chlorine most pools require. Seriously less chlorine. You cannot smell chlorine at all at our pool nor when we get out of the water.
Our neighbors heard about it and did it for their pool too. Unlike salt water it doesn't damage the pool nor the pipes. For the first 3 or 4 years after buying the house we struggled with algae. Eventually, we emptied our pool, had a service remove and install a new sealer coating (which turned out beautiful). With that changed we installed a new DE filter, pump and added the Ultra UV. Since then, we've not had a single issue with algae. Not one. The pool is glorious and bright and clean every single day with 1/2 the work than before - and less cost because we're not using all those toxic chemicals (only a very little bit of chlorine). I highly recommend it!

I love the idea of that room as the kitchen. I love my kitchen open to the great room. Then you can feel more included instead of being isolated. You’ll be very thrilled with the popcorn gone. Next popcorn removal take your 1 or 2 gal weed sprayer. First fill your tank with warm water and spray a decent section of your popcorn area with your warm water. Wait about 5 minutes. The popcorn will shave right off. ( I have a sprayer I bought new that I only use for that purpose, so it has no chemical residue.)

Wish I could have given you this little self learning idea before all the popcorn ceiling was taken down, but for future reference, here it is. My son’s bathroom had the same kind of popcorn ceiling and from his showers, it actually started falling down. So the steamer would have been a big benefit in just letting that popcorn fall down on it own. So much easier than scraping. I love your new home. ✌🏻🤍

I ❤ a stately English Tudor home! Awesome job on renovating the kitchen! Changing the location for the kitchen then opening up the walls (altho very costly) was the best idea for this home.👍 Gorgeous Emerald green cabinets and wallpaper in the foyer.
The one thing I would have different is to have only one colour for the hardware, faucet and stove-cover. Either all gold, or all copper, but not a mix. I would have chosen all copper, including a copper sink, faucet, stove-cover, drawer-pulls and copper on the stove knobs and handle instead of silver and copper lighting. But I realize that it's your home, your decision.😊
I ❤❤❤ the curved front door, so elegant! Love the pool, gazebo and curved retaining walls!
This just shows that anyone with the notion, energy and $$ can accomplish so much by DIY. You weren't afraid to try new things and it worked out faster and beautifully for you! Looking forward to future changes at your new home!❤👍

Thank you for this awesome, long video. I even enjoyed re-watching some of the video that I saw quite some time ago. Wow, u two are incredibly hard working and both definitely got a good catch in the other! Everything looks AMAZING. As for the windows, have some be diamond shape and some plain but definitely don't have some square shape. 3 different ways is too much. I think the concrete would look much, much better if you added a stain to it (if that's possible). I think the floors and range hood are my favorite parts, and the stairs look awesome too. You guys should be very proud of yourselves, u really turned this home into a show stopper!

For future reference, pine should have a coat of sealer on the wood before it is stained, it is so porous that it absorbs stain unevenly,I use a clear or "blonde" shellac ,which is made with a alcohol base, that makes it dry in minutes, an hour at the most!
It is then qwikly sanded to cut off the raised grain, that is usually done with a 220 grit sanding sponge!, then use a tack rag to get rid of the dust, then the wood will stain more like a hardwood like oak, that doesn't let the stain penetrate like pine does! FYI, pine is notorious for not staining evenly! Probably the hardest wood to get a good even color!
But using a shellac,or maybe what MINWAX calls wood conditioner,( which is very close to the same thing), just more expensive and it takes longer to dry!
But when pine is sealed, the stain will go on evenly! It is a little more work, but it will definitely make the difference!

If that is a 'Weeping Willow' in front of your house - right beside it? IF it is, I would relocate it. Willows are gorgeous (and get too large for where it's sitting) but the worst of it is the roots of the Willow tree is notorious for seeking out water and destroying pipes under the home & in the ground as it grows to it's full height.
