- In this episode, Historian V Sriram is talking about the history of the Greater Chennai Corporation, formerly known as the Corporation of Madras and Corporation of Chennai. It is one of the oldest municipal corporations in India established on 29th September 1688. Do you know who was the first mayor of Chennai? It is Nathaniel Higginson who was nominated as the first mayor. He shares interesting and unknown facts about the Tradition of Mayor's Outfit, Unique features in Madras High court, Approach of Alderman and Burgess, and much more. In 1919, the Corporation was reorganized in many aspects. At the same time, a law came into effect that Indians can also become presidents (Mayors). He also discussed the list of mayors and their contributions. In 1972, there arose an internal complaint which eventually dissolved the corporation. In 1995 it came to an end and the corporation started again. There is a big story behind the Ripon building (the location of the corporation). Correction Mayor R Ramanathan Chettiar is not the son of Raja sir Annamalai Chettiar. He is the son Diwan Bahadur SM.Rm.M Ramasami Chettiar who was co founder of Indian Bank along with Raja sir Annamalai Chettiar and V.Krishnaswami Iyer the lawyer who fought the Arthbunot Bank in the crash and his father and uncle's family provided all the funding and managed it up until its nationalisation during the emergency. Mayor R Ramanathan Chettiar is the first director of RBI.
He was the son of Raja Sir Annamalai and later given in adoption to Ramasami Chettiar who was the brother of Raja Sir Annamalai
