- Hello viewers! In this episode of History with Sriram, we are going to see about the rivers and the canal of Chennai. Chennai has 3 natural rivers and one artificial canal. The three rivers are Kosasthalai River, koovam & adayar. The artificial canal is called the Buckingham canal it was built by the British people for their own sake. The Buckingham canal is one of the largest canals in India. It ranges from Villupuram of Tamilnadu to Kakinada of Andhra. The British grew many trees in order to heat the bricks in the furnace. These red bricks are all highly seen even now in all the government buildings. 1996 சிங்காரச்சென்னை திட்டத்துல சென்னைல மாடுங்க வளக்குறது தடை பண்ண பிறகு இந்த வியாபாரம் நொடிஞ்சி போச்சு... அதுக்கு அப்பறம், அங்க திருமயிலை ரெயில்வே ஸ்டேஷன் & பில்லர் கட்ட, அரசாங்கம் அந்த எடத்துல இருக்குற குடிசை எல்லாம் புல்டோசர் வச்சி காலி பண்ணி விட்டுட்டாங்க. கொடுமையான காலகட்டம் அதெல்லாம். அப்போ நான் பி.எஸ். வடக்கு பள்ளிக்கூடத்துல எட்டாம் வகுப்பு. அதுக்கு அப்பறம் காமதேனு தியேட்டர் எதிரே வாடகைக்கு குடியிருந்தோம்....

சமீபத்தில் செஸ் ஒலிம்பியாடுக்காக அலங்கரிக்கப்பட்ட அயர்ன் பிரிட்ஜை பார்க்க சென்ற போது சென்னை பல்கலைக்கழகத்தின் பின்னால் இந்த பக்கிங்காம் கால்வாயை தூர் வாரி கொண்டிருந்தார்கள்.
அதன் பின் இப்படி ஒரு சரித்திரம் இருப்பதை அறிய மகிழ்ச்சியாக உள்ளது.

என் வயது 75. 1963-67 வரை என் தந்தை திரு.A.E. சாந்தப்பன் செங்கல்பட்டு Executive Engineer ஆக பணியில் இருந்தார்கள். அப்போது பக்கிங்ஹாம் கால்வாய் சப் டிவிஷன் ஒன்று
அந்த டிவிஷனில் இருந்தது. இந்நிகழ்ச்சியில் சொன்ன தண்ணீர்துறை மார்க்கெட் எல்லாம் நல்ல பராமரிப்பில் இருந்தது.படகுகள் போக்குவரத்தை நான் பார்த்தும் இருக்கிறேன். கிரீன்வேஸ் சாலையில்
( கிரீன்வேஸ் என்பது ஒரு நபரின் பெயர்.அந்த Proper noun ஐ பசுமைவழி என்று எப்படி அரசே மொழி பெயர்த்து சரித்திரத்தை சிதைக்கிறார்களோ? வேதனையும் சோதனையுமாக இருக்கிறதே), ஒரு லாக், North Madras ல் ஒரு லாக் இந்த கெனாலில் இருக்கும். அது செயல் படும் விதமெல்லாம் அப்பா எங்களிடம் விவரித்து சொன்ன நினைவுகள் மனதில் வருகிறது. கடலூரில் இருந்து 30 கிலோமீட்டர் தெற்கே பரங்கிப்பேட்டை வரை இந்த பக்கிங் காம் கால்வாய் உள்ளது ஐயா.
சார் இந்த பங்கசால் ஸ்ட்ரீட் இங்கிற பேர் இலங்கையில் கொழும்பிலும் இருக்கு. அங்கேயும் வெளிநாட்டவர் கால்வாய்களை கட்டினார்கள்.

South canal ends at Marakanam, my family owned the boats and we had the own padaguthurai at Vennangupet. Our boats landed at Hamilton bridge with all the goods.

This brought back memories from my childhood, going to Marina beach from T,Nagar,we crossed Buckingham canal. We would see a beautiful scene: dark waters with reflections due to a beautiful setting sun in the horizon, a catamaran (பட்டமரம்) boat carrying a large cargo, two dark figures of men in loin cloth and white turban (முண்டாஸ்), manouvering the boat with long poles.
They would be singing loudly and happily, Themmangu folk songs, தெம்மாங்கு) !! A memory fresh in my mind🙏

Kattumaram in Tamil became Catamaran. Two logs of wood tied together(Kattumaram). North of central central around Basin Bridge, the canal had steps to reach the boat plying the canal. A warehouse to store Salt was there in until the 1960s. It used to be called "Salt Quarters" salt kottaai in Tamil. There was Roxy Theater around there. RK Laxman talks about that theater in one of his stories. I remember reading about it in a non-detailed text book of the early 70s. Moore market by the canal also must have benefited from the canal based trade.

Sir but you have missed some information. Its ended in parangipettai, cuddalore district. Still today canal is flowing there. And also it was used to bring the materials for the iron and steel plant which was in parangipettai. The plant was the first of its kind in asia. PORTO NOVO alias Parangipettai has the long history. Please check that too
Near by Pondicherry this canal ended. How it flow to Cuddalore? Inside and outside there is no canal passing in puducherry!!!

1980 முதல் 1985 வரை நான் தனித்துறை சந்தையில் இருந்து காய்கறிகளை வாங்கி வந்தேன். நாங்கள் அருகில் உள்ள ராக்கியப்பா தெருவில் வசித்து வந்தோம். 10 ரூபாய்க்கு நான் முழு பையில் காய்கறிகளை வாங்கினேன். அருகில் முருகன் ஸ்டோர் என்ற பெரிய மளிகைக் கடை இருந்தது. அது எல்லாவற்றையும் மொத்த விலையில் விற்று வந்தது. முருகன் ஸ்டோர் அருகே ஏராளமான மக்கள் கூட்டம் அலைமோதியது. எந்நேரமும் கட்டுப்படியாகக்கூடியதாக இருந்த காலம் அது. நான் உண்மையில் தனித்துறை சந்தையையும் முருகன் கடையையும் மிஸ் செய்கிறேன்.

Sir. In 80s we friends used to swim in the canal at sholinganallur. All films shooting for rain fights used to be shot here. We friends in summer have stood as crowd in couple of movies. 😊

தண்ணீர் துறை மார்க்கெட் 1978 ஆம் ஆண்டு ஒரு பெண்மணி உரிமையாளராக இருந்தார். அவரிடம் இருந்து அங்கு வியாபாரம் செய்து கொண்டிருந்த 19 வியாபாரிகள் சேர்ந்து வாங்கினார்கள். 2006 ஆம் ஆண்டு குறைந்த வருமானத்தில் மார்க்கெட் ஐ நிர்வகிக்க முடியாததால் (மேலும் சில காரணங்களாலும்) மிக மிக சொற்ப தொகையை பெற்றுக் கொண்டு ஒவ்வொரு உரிமையாளராக தங்கள் பங்கை ஒரு buider வசம் விற்றுவிட்டனர்.

Just process the sewer before discharging into it. Look at canals In San Antonio, Texas, Venice in Italy, River Thames in London, Eerie canal in Buffalo (Built by Irish labor) New York state. These are all water bodies which are being maintained by civilized people. Firstly we need to have a master plan, roads and avenues clearly demarcated. We need detention ponds/lakes to collect rain water. If it is done properly we should not have shortage of drinking water. Water based transport is the least expensive. Rhine river in Europe, Mississippi in US etc. are famous examples of river based freight transporting water bodies. A great lake area between Ambattur and Avadi has now been converted into some dirty looking colonies/nagars. I used to enjoy the open space that was there in the early 70s to go to Murugappa Chettiar Polytechnic in Avadi. We don't seem to have any foresight in how to use our natural resources.

In europe especially in Britain and France many thing has been preserved more then 300 years. Nothing has been preserved In our Tamilnadu, nothing left by politics and politicians in the name of caste, language, religion, keep on laundring money from people..nothing left for people use.
