Just one tip I would add. To make the skirting easier to paint, I use a spacer (credit card depth) when fixing the skirting to create a 1/2mm gap above the flooring. Leaves enough room to run some masking tape around the perimeter (and just in, under the skirting) and saves a lot of cutting in where the skirting might be touching the floor.

Very informative video. I remember the days when I scrabbled about on the floor cutting butt and scribes before chop saws and I used a nobex hand saw. As you get older you find cutting the skirting on a pair of stools with a couple of scaffold boards spread across them saves your knees and back.
Can’t say I ever worried about cutting the scribe to suit how it looked coming into the room as I always tried to cut the scribes on the right hand end as being right handed your coping saw is always in the same place when you need it.
When house bashing I would measure each room on a floor and cut the whole lot in one go and then fix it all off at once as there is speed in repetitive actions. Do all the cutting then do all the fixing, but each persons works to what suits them. The video is ideal though for beginner DIYers so well done for simplifying the operation.

@@jonrogers1780Hey Jon! No, it'd be 44 again on the other side.
This is because they measured the angle of their wall and it was 88 degrees (instead of the assumed 90 for most corners).
I appreciate it's not super obvious because he used the tool that gave them a miter read-out. If he read out the protractor reading - it would have been 88.
Hence - his lesson that not all corners are 90 degrees!
I watched loads of videos on how to lay flooring, yours was the best. I watched it twice and away I went. Same with the skirting. You guys give the precise right amount of info. The full on cockney accents defo add to it too. Well played lads.

Handy tip: When scribing internal corners , instead of using a coping saw for the straight line.. Use a multi tool for the perfect straight neat cut ! 😮

What length nails do you use in the nailer and what have you the depth usually set at? I have the same nailer but my nails never seem to go in far enough and just crumple up or they don't hold the skirting. Don't want to resort to going back to masonry nails
Would be good to see the prep of removing the skirt on an older house, i have a house built in the 30s, removing picture frames and skirt is a nightmare due to the old sand mix used on the interior brick
Loving the tutorials guys. Im about to do my skirting boards on a porch extension. Ive an issue with one wall. Its where the new porch wall meets the existing house wall. The length is about 500mm. Its two external mitre joints. Unfortunately the new stretch of wall is angled back creating a gap of a fingers width. Ive removed the plaster from below but the gap remains. What would you guys do to reduce it whilst keeping the boards true? Cheers.
You could plane some of the back on the skirting away 😊

The old problem with plastered walls is they curl up the wall so usually need to chip off so the chopsaws got a chance to cut a 90° that fits
Great video. Bit confused when you say 'it looks like a 45 degree angle' were you referring to the corner angle, which would be 90 degrees or there abouts? And if the corner is below 90 degrees, then the miter would need to be more than 45 degrees?
I’m referring to the cuts so standard would be 45 degree but in fact it was 44 or 88 degrees 😊
A DIY'er would get away with a manual mitre saw such as a Nobex saw. Would be good to show this option as a chop saw is a big commitment for some DIY'ers. Good video though!

how did you cut your external mitres at 44 degrees? By setting the chop saw? Did you put the jig onto the blade to make sure it was at 44?

When fitting skirting and it sticks out past the architrave I see a lot of people saying they bevel the skirting but when people ask what they mean they never reply so would you know what they mean.
Basically put an angle on the end to make it thinner 😊

Depends what gauge your using this gives us the mitre so if it reads 44° mitre we do 2x44°

If I removed a 3 inch skirt how do I fit a 5 inch skirt when the plaster ran up to the top of the 3 inch skirt?
Get a bag of one coat plaster and use it to fill in the gap

If one angle is 44, the other has to be 46 right? This wasn't in the video. Most mitre's go up to 45 only on the angle, so do you have to flip one of the skirting board when you cut it to get the smaller angle?

I've done it in 3 rooms using a simple 5$ saw. The first room was done horribly. That happened because I wasn't following you guys.
On an corner if u mitred 44° do u do the other at 44 or do u have to do the second at 46° to make it up to 90°

If we do a straight line that’s plumb because of the off cut we used
Then once we 45 cut it we’ve lost the plumbness

the cuts near the radiators are wrong, they should be 45 degree cuts so yo get a cleaner and seamless finish. That does not look great at all. I always do 45 degree cuts and always get a almost perfect finish. Less cuts the better!

Anything less makes it more identified and prone to movement 😉
Include a gap below of 1-2mm for allowing easier painting as well as tension when knocked
