I had a very abusive neglectful childhood and I have been in therapy with a therapist for 6 year. We tried Emdr like 5 times and each time it never worked. I had a few memories images come up but it couldn't get through it because apparently I'm just numb to it or completely "shut down" so my therapist would keep stopping it because she said I was talking about these traumatic events like I was telling her what I had for lunch 😕🤷♀️ so what you said makes sense. It's taken a long time for my brain to get to a place where I can actually walk through it successfully. I'm still trying. If you knew what happened I guess you'd understand why it has been do difficult to relax I guess. One trauma after another is too much to process... I have been looking into healing the inner child videos but I'm trying to figure out the right approach in what order because so many things happened. I think I need to write everything down from the videos and start trying it myself and with prayer because I know I can't have successful relationships unless I heal.
I was the same way but psychedelic therapy brought everything up from there on its easy to work with ( I think even micro doses work for people like us if you have access in your country ) Brain is very protective so we dont feel pain Im sure thats why you feel so numb but its a deep scar need to let the poison out to fully heal and its painful. I would suggest hypnosis and affirmations before bed time as well when your brain works in a different wavelenght.
Hi, I'm from Chile, and I think I know why EMDR therapy isn't working for you. A few years ago we adopted a 5-year-old boy who had been abandoned at the age of 2, but who suffered several abuses by the caregivers in a systematic and hidden way for the next 3 years. He himself told us shortly after arriving at home with a strange neutrality (poker face). After making the complaint, he received therapy for 6 months and then they told us that "everything will improve when the child feels welcomed and safe." Nothing changed. We only saw more symptoms emerge. Believe me when I tell you that trying to understand what was happening and how to help him, I could already have a PhD in neurosciences!!! It was only in the middle of last year, and my son with 8-year-old, we were able to get to a specialist to diagnose him and start EMDR therapy. However, they have not been able to start EMDR yet because, among other things, he has a dissociative disorder . This implies exactly what your comment indicates: talking about himself and the situations he experienced with a totally neutral body posture and minimal eye contact. So that is the first step!!

There are studies claiming EMDR doesn't help with complex Ptsb neither dissociate disorder, I also have both. I can't say EMDR helps with the processing but i think you see it narrow. In multimodal pain therapy it's the whole concept not just distraction, what I'm trying to say several therapies at the same time. I do somatic experiencing at home, releasing frustrating at dance weekly 10hours, meditation and emdr. Whenever I did just one i was drifting away. The point is therapy without relaxation won't last as you need to get our of triggers first in hours not weeks. And this you manage with EMDR or Meditation only. For example, today i was so badly triggered so EMDR only calmed me down. But at least I got calmer breathing better and can feel the pain. And there's also somatic experiencing over Udemy. Especially with dissociations it's great and easy. Just allowing the feelings means processing, as dissociation is a survival mechanism which served out. It's like feeling heartbreaking is releasing painful stuff. I do somatic experiencing only since 1 week intensively but did it from time to time over some years and I feel more present both in mind and body. More inner stability more I can tune into my wounds. So EMDR is for me a resource not a immediate solution

That depends on the event. You can process shortly after the event depending on the event. You can also use BLS (bilateral stimulation), like tapping to reduce symptoms during a stressor, such as tapping during an MRI if you're nervous or tapping yourself slowly to sleep after a stressful day.
Does the disassociation with this emotion happen automatically? Or is it something that you have to tell yourself for The memory to interpret differently in your brain.example “that happened in the past if it’s not happening again”or?
Hi Vanessa, I'm not if I'm understanding your question correctly. If you are able to process an event using EMDR the event will be automatically interpreted in a more healthy way, such as "that happened in the past, it's over, I'm safe and everything is ok now", and your feelings will be congruent with that automatically. If you suffer from severe dissociation like the event doesn't even feel real and you can't connect with any emotions even before processing you will likely need professional guidance to help with dissociation before processing. Hi, I took your course last year and really enjoyed it. About 6 months ago I found another method called FasterEFT created by Robert Smith. I recently finished his online course. There are similarities between the two methods. Do you know anything about FasterEFT? Is one superior to the other?
Yes I know about it, and I think it can be a helpful method. I cannot say which is superior, only to say that there is medical research that demonstrates EMDR is effective and achieves permanent results. I don't believe there is any research to date of FasterEFT. Hope that helps.

I think it's a personal choice which is better as everybody is different, however EMDR does have the benefit of a lot of medical research proving its efficacy, while EFT does not. That doesn't mean however that EFT is not helpful, but it does not process trauma in the same way as EMDR, in fact it does not process trauma at all. I do however believe if used consistently it can help to re-wire the brain in a different manner so that you feel better. It really depends on the trauma and the issues and their severity and how much you apply the techniques. I hope this helps. Warm regards, Viv

Is it actually scientifically proven that self-EMDR is effective? I read that there is no real evidence supporting this idea.
There is a scientific study suggesting efficacy, however, self-emdr has not been studied as extensively as EMDR unfortunately.
