  • Episode.71 - MID SEASON FINALE
    If the Peugeot won't do as you like it to, make it look pretty. So this one is unfortunately for the eyes more than the driving. And as I am now busy with regular work for a change, it is unfortunately time to take a break.
    Until then, thank you!
    This is part 7 of my Peugeot 205 GTI restoration - on the quest to become my new daily driver.

    Thank you so much for making these videos! I think about your channel often and how crazy it is you still make such a good quality video. The mudflaps are sick! Hopefully you come back with a higher fun meter in 3 months! :D

    Looking forward to more 205 content, I like how you deliver it and I trust your skills to fix it after the drama has settled down. I've daily driven quite a few 205gtis/ctis for years and I can assure you they're quite reliable when sorted out properly.

    Superb films: without doubt one of the best, if not the best, car ownership/restoration/road trip channels on TH-cam. Thank you for all you are doing to create these films.

    Enjoy South America! As for the car. Apart from the usual suspects of compression, timing and spark, is the vacuum advance unit membrane OK? The timing seems to be terribly off. I ended up buying a complete Dutch ignition module (123Ignition) with an electronic vacuum gauge and a French mechanical modification to make it fit the 205.

    Hey man! by the sound it makes when you accelerate it seems that the timing advance is waaaaay waaaaay waaaaaaay like really much advanced haha!

    • @fila1445
      @fila1445 ปีที่แล้ว

      If I remember correctly vacuum actuators for timing advance were prone to go bad on those

    • @OnlyARoadtripAway
      @OnlyARoadtripAway  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, but how? Cambelt timing is done through pins in the pulleys and the distributor has only about 5deg of adjustability within its slotted holes and sits dead center. It should at least run somewhat decent, no? The noise only appears under load, not while holding or at idle.

    • @OnlyARoadtripAway
      @OnlyARoadtripAway  ปีที่แล้ว

      @fila1445 - Yes (is on the shopping list btw), but also doesn‘t explain the noise. It seems an awful lot like there a multiple things being off and now diagnosis is only possible once the whole lot is considered… 😭😂

    • @FranRuiz
      @FranRuiz ปีที่แล้ว

      @@OnlyARoadtripAway that´s the sign of an advanced timing, that noise is knocking. I really don´t know how is the timing set up in the 205 but if the distributor has springs maybe they are bad, so when you accelerate the timing goes to the moon..
      Did you check the initial timing?

    • @fila1445
      @fila1445 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FranRuiz I had simmilar noise when I went to France and fuelled up their “95” octane fuel :p
      It was definitely pre-igniting at high engine loads.
      Once I’ve refuelled with 98 the noise went away

    They seem picky with ignition module, only use OE or Valeo ignition coil, and to look at throttle switch

    • @OnlyARoadtripAway
      @OnlyARoadtripAway  ปีที่แล้ว

      The module is 1-0 thing, either works or it doesn‘t (if the wiring is alright). The coil wasn‘t the problem, and apparently no part of the ignition system was (apart from the plugs).

    Great series, I share your pain as I am rebuilding a phase 1 205XS. Did you get this running properly, sounds like your ignition timing is too far advanced. Keep going !you are nearly there.👍

    • @OnlyARoadtripAway
      @OnlyARoadtripAway  ปีที่แล้ว

      Since this was released I haven't been in the shop, but I'll put some fresh gas in and see what happens. I am not sure how "off" the timing could possibly be for this to still fire and run as it does with all the things I reset back to factory.

    Timing seams to be of ?

  • @GarageBiljon
    @GarageBiljon ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It sounds like a timing and fuel mixture issue combined. Maybe your cam timing is off?

    • @OnlyARoadtripAway
      @OnlyARoadtripAway  ปีที่แล้ว

      Cam timing is locked through pins top and bottom which I double and triple checked. Hence my confusion. It does sound like timing being way off, that is true.

    • @admiralfloofz658
      @admiralfloofz658 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@OnlyARoadtripAway Think he was refering to ignition timing. Its pinging too when you blip the throttle, atleast thats what it sounds like. So I would say either ignition timing is for whatever reason way off, or bad fuel.

    • @OnlyARoadtripAway
      @OnlyARoadtripAway  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah heavy pinging could have the same sound but I have never experienced something like it with bad gas. It would be a lovely easy fix, but I am not usually getting the easy-out ticket. 😩😁

    • @GarageBiljon
      @GarageBiljon ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Let's analyse this; A car pings due to the fuel mixture being too lean @@OnlyARoadtripAway. This seems to happen as you blip the throttle. Which leads me to thinking you have a temporary lean situation. This can be a vacuum leak or slow response from your AFM. But when I said cam timing I did not mean a couple of degrees, but severely off. I might be recalling this incorrectly, but I seem to remember that when your cam timing is severely off ( and I am talking 180, 360 or 540 degrees off) you will be effectively getting compression strokes when not intended and this can sound like severe pinging.

    • @OnlyARoadtripAway
      @OnlyARoadtripAway  ปีที่แล้ว

      I can answer a couple of those: Cam timing was done trough dowel pins, that can only be off by a full crank or full cam revolution, and if you plug the wires based on TDC (as I verified for that reason) you can only be 180deg off and then it doesn't start. So I know that is correct (so long there is no severe mechanical fault at hand within the engine itself). Currently the list of known or likely faults are non-functioning alternator and starter, unknown vacuum advance, unknown engine condition and to my shame unknown fuel quality. In the end it died on me which I presume means it ran out of gas (no gauge atm...). It might very well be just bad gas, but that wouldn't explain all of it and I am at the point where there is so much potential problems I might be better off just pulling the engine and going over the entire thing. The 24S has an extremely similar injection/ignition setup and I never had any of those issues, which is why I left the engine in to begin with.

  • @NomHeads
    @NomHeads ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Sounds like you're running lean aka not getting enough fuel, maybe clogged fuel injectors

    • @NomHeads
      @NomHeads ปีที่แล้ว +1

      mechanical noise, hard to start, not running on all cylinders when cold, white smoke, mechanical noise, high idle, hanging revs. I'm pretty sure that is your issue 😅

    • @NomHeads
      @NomHeads ปีที่แล้ว

      Could be a vacuum leak also letting unmetered air in

    • @OnlyARoadtripAway
      @OnlyARoadtripAway  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I tried shifting the mixture both ways on the AFM, pump and filter are new, injectors ultrasonic cleaned and tested with new filters. The noise gets much louder under load and it smooths out a lot when warm. Smells horrible of fuel in almost any state, starting issue also not really clearing.
      It could also be the AFM being off but I don‘t know if the main engine assembly is even functioning as it should… And I am tired of trying patch-fixes here and there.

    • @GarageBiljon
      @GarageBiljon ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you have a smoke tester @@OnlyARoadtripAway? If you cam timing is good and pump + injectors are good I also think you might have unmetered air issue. The Bosch AFM's can also malfunction quite badly when the sliders/ resistance plates are worn down.
