THE SHADOW IN THE CORNER - A Victorian Ghost Story

- M.E. Braddon's "The Shadow in the Corner," id a masterpiece of Victorian Gothic fiction that will send shivers down your spine. This chilling tale follows the arrival of Maria, a young servant girl, at the foreboding Wildheath Grange.
As she settles into her new role, Maria becomes increasingly aware of a mysterious presence that seems to haunt the very walls of the ancient house.
Braddon's expert prose builds an atmosphere of creeping dread, blending psychological tension with hints of the supernatural. More than just a ghost story, this narrative offers a compelling glimpse into the social dynamics of 19th-century England, touching on themes of class, gender, and the unseen burdens carried by those on society's margins.
Let our narration transport you to a world where the line between reality and the unknown grows ever thinner, and where the shadows in the corner may be more than mere tricks of the light.

That post-story chat is pure Gold.
I must second your comment. I just discovered this channel and it's refreshing to find out that the story is indeed read by a human being! While I don't know much about AI, it's easy to realize that one is listening to someone inhuman when certain words are misprounced that no one who is even slightly literate would mistake. Plus your voice is pleasing to listen to and your ideas interesting. Anyway, I have a tendency to go on and on, but thank you for this channel. I look forward to listening to more.
I really do appreciate this trigger warning. I just had an experience where I felt gaslit about going back to work after chemo treatment. The doctor told me to go back and so did my job. I really did feel like Mary. It still happens. Where someone tells you to diminish your senses, your reality, to conform to a reality that suits them. Those issues are timeless. It felt horrible. I wasn’t scared of a ghost 👻 but it might as well been to others. I love these stories because they happened long ago and I know it’s a story but there are issues that are alive and well. I do appreciate this story and your channel. Thank you for taking the time to adapt and change.
Thank you for your openness with us. Wishing you all the best in your process.
Tony, in regards to the people that "Cry Out" and Despise EVERYONE that may Mention or Refer to a Topic that THEY Consider idiotic, Archaic or even Blasphemous and Scorn YOU for mentioning Those "Pseudo Sciences".

I'm actually excited for bedtime tonight Tony, this story sounds interesting, I have to applaude you and thank you, I can only imagine what goes into putting these stories out for everyone, and your voice is like coming home after a long day, much appreciated 🙏💛
This is a rare Victorian story that gives a servant feelings and a background rather than a one dimensional cipher.
That struck me immediately.
Yeah, Maria isn't some lady or anyone of note, she's just some poor girl who has to become a servant.
Beautifully read as always. The real pleasure is your gifted river of words and thoughts after the tale. Keep on shining, you crazy diamond.
This was such a wonderful discussion. I listened to the last 20-30 minutes over again. Thank you for spending the time and putting in the thought for that. I'm also glad you've stopped worrying so much about the naysayers and busybodies. There will always be people trying to tear you down, but you soar when you find the wind of the people who support you.
Mary Elizabeth Braddon wrote many delicious stories. This is one of them. Tony does it magnificently, as always.
I came for the delightfully different story by Mary Elizabeth Braddon and stayed for the intriguing foray into philosophy. Another masterpiece, Tony!
Great story. Vivid Imagery.

Sounds like a tale that needs to be heard with headphones on and in the dark ... thank you Tony for these delicious spooky stories 👻
Loved your comment, that’s exactly what I am doing right now!
Wonderful story. I've had my fair share of mental health struggles and the description of what Baskin was feeling that night he stayed in the room was masterful. It always hits hardest at night.
That house is just wonderful! It must have a thousand stories within it's walls
I need to watch something with people in sideburns and turtlenecks going "hey Joan" in snappy RP now.
Great tale and delightful rambling!
Perfect! I fell asleep to this, and now I can listen again to hear the rest of the story.😊
It makes sense that she wrote for the ear, as you so nicely phrased it, now knowing a bit of her background. She was an actress, so she would have considered the possibility of translating her work into plays (this would make a great play, without being weighted down with too many different locations) and I think she would have known quite a few people in her time who were illiterate and the importance of reading aloud to others in one’s family and their friends so, it’s likely she would have considered that, too. I appreciate the strong characterizations and I can imagine reading those aloud and the way she described Marie’s behavior, being so subtle and yet playing that out on a stage would have given an opportunity to display all those qualities and emotions that, I think young actresses, especially would appreciate. The drama and tragedy. It’s quite skillful and I have more appreciation now that you have brought that up, the listening and reading is of course your profession, as well as the psychological aspect and she did make it convincing. I really enjoyed your reading! Excellent choice! I hadn’t read this since I was a young dramatist, myself. It’s so interesting to reflect on it, again. Thanks!
I appreciated your commentary on the difference between the mechanistic and mystical views of the world. It reminds me of the philosophy ofAlan Watts. Well done for identifying and mentioning the literary example in this story.
Well done. I've heard this once before. Thank God, I've never been in a situation where I had servants. I'd never have been able to abide them.
I'm 100% here for your pepperiness!!! I enjoyed your post story banter.
Great choice of story to add to your frightening catalog
@@dirkbruere you're not wrong😄
Thank you, I loved this one. The author really brings the characters to life - the ineffectual don, the grumpy and bigoted old retainers and the sad young maid.
Yes, I very much enjoyed our chat. Thanks again, Tony.
Yours is a BRILLIANT commentary. I am as drawn in by your thoughts, voiced with thoughtfulness and study, as much as I am to Mary Elizabeth Maddon.
Many sincere thanks.
Thank you very much ::)
@ClassicGhost
As ever, a great choice of material superbly presented by your good self with sincere appreciation of the work and the mechanics and subtlety of touch of the author. (new to me so ta for the intro).
Segue: 😂...
Re the outro (if you will, or more properly [said Alice, quite forgetting her English), the postscript essay and your musings on the nature of societal change.
If you will bear with me...
The pendulum metaphor specifically;
My dad and I discussed this topic (revision of cultural mores and established paradigms).
His opinion at the time ( his conclusion is perhaps more accurate as he's no longer around to alter or expand his thoughts.) was that, in this case and most others where significant social mores are quite radically revised - if we apply the pendulum metaphor - the impetus or momentum required to enact the shift can often be so substantial that the pendulum initially swings far further into the opposite, or opposed, position that it therefore requires time and finesse to reach its ultimate and desired median.
For instance in the case of, say, the equalisation of rights, due recognition of skills, talents and the sheer undeniable sociological and biological necessity to acknowledge, champion and foster equality of the sexes (excuse my clunky sentences if you will).
Welcoming women, encouraging women into the workforce and society in the round, educating those (mostly, although not exclusively, male naysayers or hidebound thinkers), rewriting the unspoken social contracts first seems, to those who oppose such change, to speak of things 'going too far!' or 'Political correctness gone mad. ' or, more insidiously and difficult to change, the rethinking, revising the creeds and mindsets of whole religious doctrines and practices.
His theory was that, given time and due, informed conversation etc, the metaphorical pendulum will, eventually, reach the correct (to the majority opinion) median state.
I can only hope both that he was correct in this estimation, and also that you, the Tony Walker audience and family of listeners, bore with me while i bored on at such a length of ramble. 😅....
If you got this far, whether you concur with this notion or not, I salute and thank you.
And of course you too Tony for the sterling efforts that you go to to keep us, your audience, entertained.
(I wonder it this will 'trigger ' or interest anybody out there enough to elicit a coherent response. Or even if my words were coherent for that matter).
Thanks for your time.
It really is like Christmas Morning when we get a new story from you!
What an excellent writer, Thank you Tony, like always you did a wonderful job.
I love a good gothic ghost story as well,I enjoyed this story....and always enjoy your chats...thank you tony
This is why I love-love your commentary Tony! Your output is a gift. Thank you 🎉🎉
Great story and narration, Tony!
Mr. Skags/Skegs is quite the "pleasant" individual.
Love the term "nowt".
Thanks!
Thank you Tony 🎉 good story, wonderful commentary! 😊😊😊
Your opinion of the public is absolutely valid. You are providing a wonderful, artistic review of a variety of authors. I am so sorry that so many listeners feel the need to criticize. Those who just listen, and make no real contribution to the production should perhaps count their blessings instead of nitpicking. Thanks for your interpretations, much appreciated in this quarter. 🥰
Thank you .
Im just deleting them now . i just deleted one a second ago in fact
I’m enjoying an adult beverage this late Sunday afternoon . . . working on some paper crafting (junk journal). Love listening to the old ghost stories, Tony.
🇺🇸
Thanks Tony, I really like this story - I first encountered it about 8 years ago, then heard Bite Sized Audio Classics read it a couple of years ago and now the delightful Tony Walker interpretation!
May I suggest (in the most respectful way of course) that you pay less attention to negative comments? Your channels are all so good, your post story analyses are interesting and also amusing and the stories are fab. There’ll always be critical people, always ignorant folk who trumpet contrary opinions, and the internet is the worst. Loads of us think you’re totally fab. I don’t really say so very much, whereas the complainers enjoy complaining so probably do so more frequently - ignore the buggers!
Thanks again. For what it’s worth I definitely err on the side of the Romantics, Jung, Pantheism and the like! ❤️
Writing here from America, hello. I enjoy not only your readings, also the very informative chats at the end. It takes me back to my university literature courses. Thank you so much.
Early to bed for me and the dog! Can’t wait. Thank you x👻😊
Listening at 3 am my time!! Your voice is soothing and helps me settle down.
The post story analysis is inspirational for me to keep writing in the horror and paranormal genre. The British accent is also authoritative and highly credible.
yeah, but it's a con trick, the accent. don't believe that people who speak like that are authoritative and credible really :) Keep on writing!
I do enjoy your info & ideas--one reason is it reminds me of my A.P. Lit class in high school where we read great works & discussed ideas over what the author may have meant & how we interpret it in different time/situations.... And couldn't help but draw parallels of the old coot & orphan girl to current US political parties....
I loved your reading of this story Tony and really enjoyed the thought provoking after chat...thankyou.
Looking forward to this later. Thank you Tony.
Very wonderful reading, Tony, as always. Had to laugh at "rubber duck." I really enjoyed the aspect that there was no ghost, but the pain and trauma of the previous resident of the room, lingers and can be felt by others -- brilliant. We all know when we feel "vibes," don't we.
Really enjoyed this story! Thank you!
The reading, chilling; the commentary afterwards, delightful.
That wàs SO good! Poor maria😢❤
Gripping, heart wrenching story, narration, also this time around, as well as your informative, powerful, thought-provoking commentary. Thank you for the necessary, very important trigger-warning. Where can The Cold Embrace be found? In an anthology, perhaps? You are the best, Tony. Thanks so much for your hard work for us. Much appreciated.
I could listen to you read the dialogue of petulant, surly working-class servants all day---lol! You've got peevishness down pat. And yes, your personal peevishness extended several times into the epic ramble as you characterized the outraged opinions of us, the TH-camd Masses. But, great story and good points made. I don't dare have an argument of my own now. I will share, however, that I wore my "You tried to get into the locked drawer today, didn't you?" T-Shirt yesterday as I went about my errands---and a woman, emptying trash bins at the gas station, thought it was very funny, and it opened up a whole conversation about her favorite t-shirt sayings, lol! 😉🤣
Excellent! Really enjoyed the thoughts after the story. I miss having interesting dialogue. People apologize too much me thinks. I enjoy others sharing their thoughts, that’s how I learn and fend off stagnation of
1:19:29 ideas. Keep up the great work!
Yes I love story telling for the ear, that’s when writing becomes art ❤
Looking forward to this!! And hoping for your conversation at the end!
Thank you, Tony! Very good tale, well narrated.
Good decision on the warning. The hook description reminded me of my best friend's husband.
I love the Stone Tape! It's available at the video store where I work, Scarecrow Video.
I love your meanderings. Thank you. I learned a new word.
The thing is, this is how I've been most of my life; loving science and how it teaches of the interconnections of all life and systems, plus how unique each moment is; AND the spiritual, expect I discovered that I'm a Pagan at heart, and love the living world, and feel the old echoes.
The thing you're talking about with the stones is called an impression, and people trying to understand them lead to the discovery of magnetic tape, neat eh? (I've experienced them, but others have not)
This is what I think when I click on "Classic Ghost Stories" channel. Wonderful story magnificently done! The author has added to Poe's theory of the death of a young beautiful woman by adding in orphan to boot! I like the handkerchief over the face; it's in keeping with her genteel upbringing. Also the trigger warning was absolutely fair I reckon given that the story dwells on the action and method of suicide not just toying with the idea of it.
Enjoyed your chat very much. Listening to your channel has introduced me to British authors I was not aware of. This was an especially good tale in my view.
Thank you very much
It's so strange that you mentioned the tv drama of the 70's that I believe is called not 'The Stone', but 'The Wall', starring amongst others, Jane Asher. I remember seeing it when I was very young and it was totally terrifying. I never forgot it. Archaeologists were examining a very ancient buried stone wall that was giving off emanations and vibes of past events. Chilling and very well performed. An unusual concept. By the way - the quartz skull - anything that was owned by Johnny Depp has to be okay! And as to Soho - I was a very young secretary working in Soho - back in the day! And I assure you it may not be seedy now, but it was most definitely seedy then. But it was vibrant - and there were many restaurants. Thank you for your thoughts. Very interesting.
Another wonderful one! Thank you, Tony. I agree that re-enchantment is something we are craving in a deep way, and see it as a human necessity. I'll look for that Kinsgnorth book. I enjoyed Beast. The Master and his Emissary is on my shelf, I'll have to pick it up and finally read it. (You will, I hope, let us know if you start wearing a tricorne hat, smudging kohl under your eyes, and muttering 'ahoy matey'...)
I was listening to a _different_ story of yours from about a month ago when the notification rang on for this wonderful tale! Lol! Thank you so much 🎃🎃🎃
I am in love with this TH-cam channel! I enjoy these stories so much. Greetings from 🇲🇽.
Such a perfectly written story beginning to end. 👌
That was a good'un. I particularly enjoyed your commentary. There's so much flux welling up right now, and I wonder if it is a literal rage against the machine. Grand story. Grand thoughts ( geordie vernacular rather than Grand as in palatial,,, although on second thoughts, perhaps both hmm)
Fascinating chat. Thank you.
We are often not effective communicators. Michael's lackadaisical acceptance of his cranky servant's grunt, as an answer, set the scene for this tragedy.
It's like he said, why not just give her one of the bottom rooms?
One of your best commentaries, and a very good story.
I hate that butler and i hope he was turned out of his place.
Love your commentary. You wander in interesting ways.
I love that you know about the theory of morphic resonance- i read a very entertaining work of fiction based on the stone tape theory& was fascinated! Thank you so much for the ghost stories🖤

Hi,
I have to say that this is the first time I have listened to your commentary after the story and wow!, it’s as interesting and enjoyable as your fabulous narrations. Thank you for being an oasis in my day.
You’ve crossed to the dark side ! Great :)
Good story... I liked the chat, interesting thoughts on mental life and balance. Thanks.
** SPOILER **
Omg how sad Maria's background and fate were, right from how close she was with her father only to be orphaned, and then how everything turned out for her in the end 😢
I kept having to remind myself it's just a story cos I really felt for her, to be that close to someone then lose the person along with a comfortable life. Got me teary there, but what happened in the end left my mouth agape, literally lol. I can't make any sound since my husband is asleep lol. What a sad, sad story! I'm gonna need time to get over it 😭
Hello Tony, really enjoyed your commentary and wanted to point you to Richard Tarnas and his book “Cosmos and Psyche”. You were touching on similar ideas presented in the book. I think you will enjoy it.
2am what better time to start listening to ghost stories
Thanks, Tony. Brilliant storytelling and waffle per usual. Regarding the 21st century imposition of current values to period literature, I too eschew the reactionary nannying to censor or pearl clutch. Period pieces are representative of the times in which they were written. When we enjoy such, it doesn’t imply agreement of acts and attitudes no longer in fashion. These works record the writer’s experience and perspectives of their past current culture. For those offended by difficult topics, I suggest that they give the news a miss.
I wish I’d written this . It does not imply agreement- exactly. I must use ‘pearl clutch ‘ more
Loved this story.
Many thanks for this one! Never before heard of it or Braddon but loved it (and as always, your excellent narration). 🖤
This IS one of the great ones.
"2nd trigger warning in 5 years"...heck, I'm triggered every time I hear your stories. But all good triggers!! 😂
You're dark/black sense of humor is spot on for my liking!
I've heard this one several times before, but I'm sure I'll thoroughly enjoy Mr. Tony's rendition!! His voices are unsurpassed imho.
Honestly, I'm more trigger by anger toward the !gnorant old man and woman. They deserved to be haunted by her ghost for the rest of their existence!!
At 1:03:30 you had me me rolling in laughter when talking about 'The Rubber Duck' and CB radios. Because of you i had the CW McCoy song 'Convoy' in my head all damn day long!! Thanks!!😂😂
Hi from Ireland 🇮🇪
Excellent , creepy sceal
Thanks Tony
Beautifully read. Thanks for the wonderful work. Don't let the New World Order get their hands on the Crystal Skull 💀 By the way if you have not seen it The Ninth Gate with Johnny Depp is a great underrated supernatural film. Especially if you love rare books.
I thoroughly enjoyed the story and enjoyed the chat. At times, i feel im insane but can't or shan't tell you why
Thank you Tony 😊
Warning appreciated. Many thanks❤
It's the old Classicism vs. Romanticism argument of Kenneth Clark, from whom I learned everything I know about art history. Almost.
And yes "The Cold Embrace" is another favorite of mine. I'm feeling achy and a bit down, so what's the best cure? Tony Walker reading me a "bedtime" story 💤🥰💜
Very well done 👍
Been watching and enjoying your channel here in NZ for quite a while now Tony - right up there on my top favourites list. Thanks for all effort you put into it.
odds and sods - I can’t say although it’s widely widely said. I’ve lived in different parts of the UK and I’ve heard it in all of them so I think it’s a very common thing.. away from the hearth is less common though understandable
You should write a ghost story about an angry commenter, with those raspy, angry voices.
Excellent 🫡
I believe the reason that most people click -- or tap -- on a thumbnail with a house is because they want to go into the house and see what's inside. Pure curiosity. Anything else and you are already showing them what's inside.
This mystery story sounds great with a Victorian ambience: such as London's Mystery: The Dark Alley playing in the background with rolling thunder.
Excellent story and insightful commentary. I agree that it appears feminine power is on the rise. I believe you are referring to the "yin-yang" of the universe which is simply about harmony and balance. Similar to how Karma works.
Thank you for the warning, especially that it'a a graphic description, not some mere mention. Noped myself out of it immediately.
if it had been just a mention , but it wasn’t
I have to ssy the after chats are awesome when your peppery😂. I'm one of those marketers dreams that head straight for the thumbnails of houses. I'm also weird but for way more things than that. It's mostly because haunted houses are my favorite ghost story and I'm too lazy or time pressed for proper research. I adore your reading so am a bit complacent, knowing if you've produced it, it's good. ❤
Interesting comments. The problem with theorizing about the past, when not much was written about the common person, is that we do not know how prevalent depression was. On the other hand many Greek tragedies and other stories tell us that the Ancient Greeks often suffered great mental anguish. Human suffering was often viewed as the consequence of an unfortunate encounter with a God or as being the result of a God’s jealousy.
the social structure of the modern world has is much like other more ancient structures. It places immense pressure on those who live within it to conform, but in the past, when the world was a vast mystery, an individual could escape into the wilds of the world. Of course that assumes they would not encounter other social structures in their journeys.
Best ramble ever.
ha ha!
Oh yes, gaslighting is alive & well & we all need to educate ourselves so we can instantly recognize it & halt it
I know what Sheila means. I've had objects in stores call to me.
I have a very kitschy angel, about a foot and a half tall, that pulled me from the door of Goodwill and all the way across store and forced me to buy her. Trust me, I wouldn't normally buy anything like it.
I also wear a small ring that did the same thing in a jewelry shop.
Rupert Sheldrake's son, Merlin, wrote an interesting book on fungi: "Entangled Life" (2020).
Crying staircase, Divis Flats. Belfast. Coincided with a sandstorm in the ME depositing red sand about the place.
It no longer exists, but had a local impact.
I'm rubber-stamped with insanity but I can't think of anything clever to say this time. I'm almost certain I've left an unhinged comment or two though I doubt it's ever been pushy. I don't like telling people what to do.
Tell Sheila that crystal hunters in the States are called "rock hounds." I'm not sure if it's a title for spiritual or geological enthusiasts (or both) but it sounds fun.
The story was brilliant, as was the telling, but as I've stated above I've got nothing clever to say today. But I really enjoyed it. Thank you.
I am also not a fan of trigger warnings. The research shows that they actually don't reduce emotional distress, nor do people actually opt out of graphic content. In fact, all they do is increase anticipatory anxiety and reduce enjoyment of the media. The truth is that the reason we have stories in the first place is to explore difficult subject matter in a safe way. It is part of being human to experience sadness or discomfort, so to shy away from it is to weaken ourselves unnecessarily.
These old stories are reminders of how very much like ourselves our ancestors were. I want to feel uncomfortable when I hear these stories. I want to be able to disagree with civility and grace, because if we cannot disagree with one another then all sorts of good ideas will go by the wayside.
Anyway, thank you for all these wonderful stories. You are an incredibly talented narrator and I do hope that you know that the work you do is so appreciated.
I really appreciated this comment. I was discussing the role of horror and ghost stories the other day with a friend and they are absolutely intended to inoculate us against real fear. We like a little bit of fear. That being said there are some stories particularly crime stories these days that contain elements that I do not find entertaining and I prefer not to watch. It’s not always clear from the title that they will contain these distasteful things. And as I found out some people are a lot more sensitive than others and less emotionally robust. also fashion has a lot to do with it. I’m not sure Edgar Allan Poe gave trigger warnings and he does some dreadful things to that cat.
