That’s it. I’m sick of this. I’m getting in touch with Herbert West. We will no longer be called fools and Mr Warren will no longer be dead after Mr West gets involved.
Warren: I'm not dead Audience: Wot? Horrorbabble: Nothing, here's your audiobook Warren: I'm feeling better! Horrorbabble: You're not fooling anyone, you know
Beautiful story, one of those tales that might have been thrue. And as always perfectly read. Thanks again for some pleasant listening. All the best to you both......
I detect a good dose of Vincent Price here! Something from the Burning Man from the Hounded Palace, a bit of The Cry of the Banshee. I also smelled The House that Dripped Blood. As usual, it was excellent with Ian's voice.
This is such an atmospheric story, made even better by the stellar narration. Was the author an Irish man I wonder? Kate's cottage reminds me of my great grans. She lived in a tiny cottage in the hills in N Wales. She was as tough as nails, got water from a hand pump and had no electricity. After greatgrandad died, she carried on living there, caring for a few hens and sheep well into her 80's. I burnt my hand on her Aga as a small child. Have a wonderful week.
@@HorrorBabble You won’t be disappointed. There are some great tales for sure Ian that have been forgotten. Some in the vein of Ramsey Campbell’s ‘Ancient Images’ and etc.
I'm inclined to add , thanks for your introductions they add to the mistery and the history of the author and where original publication is a great idea, thanks again ,H.B team
"I want to buy a spade. And a crowbar. And i better take a pair of those rubber boots, size 9 i think. Also, a Holy Bible, a first aid kit, and please make a copy of my last will and testament."
What an amazing weird tale. Expertly written. Two distinctive main characters each uncovering the mysterious secrets of their inheritance both together and separate from each other. Perfectly narrated as always Ian. Glad to hear the American accent is still spot on. Great choice of story.
This is such a rich and believable story. An almost Tolkien-esque commitment to lore, attention to family lines and culture. It feels believable because it's steeped in history. This author just HAS to be Irish! Of course Ian does a stand up job as always. Your American accent is so John Wayne tough.
What a superb climax and subsequent ending with the proper amount of closure, as opposed to the traditional enigmatic cliffhangers! WOW! I'm so impressed. Nice to see ye' good ole' crucifix at work in a non vampiric storyline too. Bravo! 👏 Love this writer and it's such a shame the author is hard to track for more! I never comment like this but I'm thoroughly stunned! Thanks for sharing this lovely gem as it is one of my favs now & will be forever seared in my memory moving fwd lol ✝️🥹
Same. Of course, I enjoy tales ending in certain doom or madness too, but the stories that...(possible spoiler) ...manage to be harrowing without being the end of the protagonists have a special place in my heart.
Just started. It is gonna be good. I love how some of these old authors managed to keep their identities secret. They have the last laugh over technology and the modern age. I do not even try to look the author up if Ian says he cannot find the real name. Lol! If Van Melson cannot do it I sure as heck cannot! "And into his eyes came the look of a rabbit confronted by a stoat." Thanks for narrating this gem!
Maybe not *so* old - the Pan series also includes works from the likes of Stephen King. Goodreads shows that Cruise contributed at least six stories to the anthology series.

The one time I've been to Ireland, it was to a little place called Thomastown, south of Kilkenny and north of Waterford, like in the story. On the edge of town is a small, run down old castle - small enough to have been a kind of a mansion. Half of Ireland could be described this way, I suppose, but I still can't help but wonder if Thomastown inspired the location in this tale.
Barker's stuff isn't in the public domain. We recorded The Midnight Meat Train with his permission once, but there was a time limit as to how long it could remain published.

Somehow, the American accent makes characters sound silly, especially when they are shouting "Go to the devil"😂 The spookiest part of the story was the backstory. It's like when you read Dumas and realise all those massacres and throwing people down wells actually happened. And then you think of how they are still actually happening in places... 😐

Fantastic! Sounds like one heck of a woman.
A ghost story from an author who is probably lost and dead is so halloween
Every day is Halloween! However- i agree!
What's your point exactly?
That was absolutely a good collection, Ian.
I remember this one nostalgically. It had a feel reminiscent of Robert Aickman’s ‘The Stains’.

I like the idea of stone tape theory and the trauma of the past remaining in the walls.
Thank you for the wonderful narration. The backstory of your research was an extra treat. ❤
