    AMD is the other chip manufacturer on the market, not Radeon... Radeon is a product line like GeForce for Nvidia.

      Good point -- I stand corrected.

      Actually he's totally right without even knowing.

      This just means that Radeon is now a distinct unit within the AMD brand, with their own staff and budget... Radeon is still an AMD product line and AMD is still the manufacturer behind all this...

      @Против Глобал
      That's 100% wrong. AMD did buy ATI, Radeon originally was a trademark of ATI.

    • @ulriksonne5697
      @ulriksonne5697 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I wouldn't fault you for saying radeon because AMD bought ATI 11 years ago and is now the radeon technologies group and is a separate subdivision of AMD, so saying the gpu chips are made by radeon is technicaly correct, although probably misinformed.

    five years later and the thought of getting an NVidia graphics card for $70 is unimaginable. I checked a local retailer earlier and 45 out of 50 cards were sold out! The rest were in the $1000+ range.

      You don't. That is just for 'Geforce Experience' - this is not required and is optional when installing the drivers. If you do want to use it, creating an NVidia account only requires an email address, so just create a 'burner' email if you're feeling that paranoid

    Hi Christopher, I'd like to join with all the other viewers complaining about this totally unecessary personal data collection. It's self defeating at any rate, if we can't avoid it - and thanks for showing me how to in this case - we'll just set up an unmonitored address and give them, err, poo for the personal details. Bob.

    The GT1030 is actually one of the best base model GPU's that has ever been released. It can competently do everything needed. While it's can't do 4k gaming, at can do 4k video playback without any problems. Additionally, I fully agree with you about the "Geforce Experience". Users can avoid installing it by selecting "Custom Install" during setup and deselecting it.

    • @ExplainingComputers

      AMD farmed out the driver for my APU A10-6700 to some company that didn't do a good job such that it crashed the computer. I go to this company's site and while I tried to download the "improved" driver, these fools tried to load on to my computer some sort of massive program that functioned as crashware. I got so mad, I returned to Linux. I had planned to do that in time but I had reasons for desiring Windows. Away Linux and its drivers both open and not-open have been smooth sailing for me.

    I suppose it's technically not "silent" due to coil whine. But it's considerably quieter than its fan cooled counterperts, at the expense of performance and longevity. It would however, be advantageous in a home theatre computer where low power consuption, low heat generation and low noise are favourable.

    Another great piece of Sunday night viewing and on something that isn't seen that often, passive cooled GFX cards, even tho I ordered one quite a few years back in error - an Nvidia 6600 GS instead of a 6600 GT.
    I had always wondered what the thermals of passive cards were like when being pushed or tested.

    Almost 2022, bought an asus passively cooled one a month ago after my 1050ti went kaput and overclocked it by more than 200 MHz on core and 530+ MHz on memory. To keep temps down, I strapped a 60mm case fan onto the large heatsink with zip ties and have it run full whack off a molex end of the psu and it maintains a good high 50s-low 60s celsius at full load while gaming.

I'm very happy with it, I also play lots of games including GTA V in very high detailes, Black Mesa (around 120 FPS) and much more games but I had overclocked it with the Aorus engine GPU Boost - 1667 and Memory Clock 7498, also I added a 5volt fan on it to keep the temperatures low while gaming. Up to 85C without the fan and up to 55C with the fan in the summer heat and demanding games.

  • @georgemaragos2378

    Hi Christopher. Nice video as always.
    For me the GT 1030 has 3 plus points
    1) Low current draw max 30 watts of the bus , so no need for any extra power cables and a small capacity power supply as found in OEM machines handle this well.
    2) While you briefly showed the smaller half height card, this is a strong selling point for small factor machines i have a HP 8200 and Lenovo , both have limited 200-240wat power supply and small factor cases, I have the same passive cooled in the Lenovo and the stock with small fan in the HP - they both perform identicall
    3) Modern games love the 3D graphics, most games on the built in intel video chip ran 10 - 30 fps, more they run 50 - 180 fps , so overall each games sort of runs x3 to x5 times faster in fps
    The passive cooled unit does take up 2 slots, and it is about 1.5 inches longer than the standard fan cooled unit
    PS while i dont overclock any of my PC items, you can use as a utility tool and overclock software the MSI Afterburner program
    Regards
    George

      I guess it depends if you are a gamer or not.
      As a gamer, I do need the latest drivers.
      The other reason is OpenGL. If you need OpenGL, Microsoft doesn't include the OpenGL driver that comes from nVidia, AMD, or whatever for some reason. They just delete it. I have never seen an official explanation from Microsoft for this.

  • @SnekInASuit
    @SnekInASuit 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Couple mistakes I'd like to point out:
    First off, that is a DVI-D *dual link* socket, not *single link*, as single link has a square of pins missing from the middle of the connector. The four pins that would surround the flat pin at the end are for DVI-A on their own, and constitute DVI-I when paired with the flat pin.
    Second, the little lever on the PCI-E slot only needs to be held on *removal* of a card, not *insertion*. The little latch is tapered on the top and flat on the bottom, so insertion force alone is enough to clip it in, while no amount of force will pull it back out without breaking something.
    Third, not so much a mistake as a tip for anyone who sees this, but if you download the latest drivers from NVIDIA's site directly, as opposed to using whatever came with the disc, you can forgo installing Geforce Experience entirely (as an option in the installer). It's a completely separate companion app from the actual driver, and the base utility is still installed regardless of whether you have it or not. It does nothing but offer access to game setting optimizations and advanced features of the card, like Shadowplay.
    Lastly, a small matter of opinion. If you're looking for good video editing performance, I can sort of see why one might go for this card, but it still stands that the price to performance ratio of the card in _games_ is absurd compared to the slightly higher-up options in the same lineup. Even for entry-level gaming, I'd never recommend anything below a 1050, because sub-30 frames on anything but the lowest settings is not a good experience. It's amazing what the CUDA cores can do in an editor, even in an underpowered card like that, but that is such a special use case that I don't think it's worth recommending the card to anyone looking for even the slightest bit more versatility.

    • @ExplainingComputers
      @ExplainingComputers  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for your detailed comments. The box for this graphics card is clearly labelled 'single link DVI', which is why I noted that. Yes, I got the lever thing wrong about having to hold it back to insert the card. I am staggered people think this is an issue of note! As I stated in the video, working blind on camera is not easy, and I remember the days when this was the case on some APG slots. As you note, I was fitting the card for video editing -- which I would hardly describe as a minority use. And many people here have noted their use of the GT 1030 for games. A GTX 1050 is about twice the price, which to many people is significant. :)

    • @SnekInASuit
      @SnekInASuit 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I suppose then the extra pins on the socket are simply for dual link connector compatibility then, so I apologize for that nitpick. As for the use case, you are correct, video editing is not exactly a minority use case, but my point was that besides editing work, and perhaps accelerated video encoding/decoding, the card will offer what I personally would consider a very suboptimal experience, especially for gaming. Granted, it will be better than some cards from a number of generations ago, especially with the architectural improvements made in the last generation, but as you mentioned in the video, it may not even be able to run some more demanding titles straight away without some fiddling. There are AAA titles these days that even require a minimum of 3 GB of VRAM for anything but the lowest settings (see Shadow of Mordor).
      I do apologize if I came off as a grumpy commenter, long days at work tend to do that once in a while. The basic gist of my opinion is that if one is going to get into PC gaming at all, then the *value* of the higher-priced card is most certainly worth the cost for the difference in experience one would be getting at 1080p (as mentioned my many other commenters below as well). It is twice the price, but the GPU is doing increasingly more of the heavy-lifting in games, and the extra power will both provide a better experience now, and avoid having to replace the card sooner down the road.

  • @officer_baitlyn
    @officer_baitlyn 7 ปีที่แล้ว +22

    maybe not the point of the video but id stay away from sub XX50 nvidia cards since they are worse value than the more mid range ones
    the 1030 for example has *alot* less perfomance while having a similar price to a 1050

    • @ExplainingComputers
      @ExplainingComputers  7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I take your point, and it really depends on what you need to do with the card, but the 1050 models are about double the price of the 1030s, and non are passively cooled.

    • @ukcroupier
      @ukcroupier 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      In UK the 1050 is considerably more expensive than a 1030 (1030 can be had for £60, the 1050 lowest I've seen is £108) plus, if you've seen any of his other rigs, he's a big believer in having stuff that does the job he needs it to do, not paying for power that's wasted.

    • @officer_baitlyn
      @officer_baitlyn 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      yeah noise wise the passive 1030 definetly outdoes any active 1050
      just wanted to mention that if someone is looking for value, the 1030 isnt the best option available.

      i dont know if i want install software to uninstall a driver... just do it manualy and to use the windows update for GPU driver is totaly ok cause the source is Nvidia anyways... i guess if you clean the temp-folder so the old installers dont pile up there is no different

    • @vyns5896
      @vyns5896 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think the software actually installs. It just runs and allows you to cleanly remove all traces of the old driver so a fresh clean install can occur. Not usually needed if you are just updating a driver on the same Video Card, but 'almost' essential if you are changing from one generation of cards to another. And I would say, vital if you were to change from and AMD to an Nvidia or other way around.

      I would strongly recommend AMD hardware in conjunction with Linux. You can use the open source driver (which performs exceptionally well these days) and you won't have to worry about driver compatibility down the line (which tends to be problem in the long run with nvidia on Linux). Generally speaking, nvidia has historically been very uncooperative with the Linux community, so while you CAN get proprietary drivers working right now, don't expect them to work with newer versions of the Linux kernel several years from now.

    • @electronicsworkbench
      @electronicsworkbench 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      In my 40 years experience with computers from the IMSAI to current, the biggest issue is too little exhaust fan draw. Yes the PS will get hotter if it's the only thing exchanging the air. One single chassis fan (80mm or larger) at the back of the case will draw enough air in the keep temps down. You don't need high speed or high volume flow fans where a 1 Pound note or Dollar bill will flutter straight out. The shape of the blades makes most of the noise and movement of air. Sawtoothed leading edge blades are quieter than straight or most curved blades. Gelid fan's are curved but in such a way as to reduce noise and offer good air flow. Remember we are not trying to vent coal mines here. A little research and common sense will do more than any marketing hype ever will.

When I went to install more RAM to the machine, the apparently GTX 16x accn graphics was actually an 8x accn graphics card, albeit with a GB of GDDR but, on checking the spec on the operating system, it was in fact, a GT 635 LE Graphics Card. This combination in total cost me like EUR 250.
    Fun thing about this I have a silent computer which has a minor power draw, AND it plays most games just fine at 1080p high settings (like GTA V).
    It's about EOL now as games progress, but even in 2023 this is still a perfecly fine and viable budget gaming solution.
    For my son I purchased a ryzen 5600G based PC. This outpeforms the 1030 slightly, but has the advantage of having an upgrade path.
