    And after almost 6 years since release, this video shows how far we've come with integrated graphics on our 'non'-gaming systems. Ready for this weeks video Sunday!

      Very true. I am currently planning a Ryzen build video series, and have been reflecting on this very point.

    Here it is March, 2018 and I keep encountering the APU term, and this 2012 video explained it well...THANKS!

  • @ExplainingComputers

    Thanks for removing your previous personally abusive comment.
    In this video I do not say that this APU is better than having a separate graphics card, and indeed my comparison charts show that high power graphics cards like those you mention do significantly outperform APUs. However, APUs do allow PCs with reasonable graphics power to be build for low budgets, and this what I am showing here. The bottleneck argument is part of the story and made by many -- including Intel and AMD.

      Hey could you do a review of AMD Ryzen 3 2200G or Ryzen 5 2400G, you have more than 100k subs, AMD would be surely kind enought to send you samples with your favourite Gigabyte boards (usually AB350N GAMING)
      This video explains everything beginner needs but its a little bit outdated.

    No, the GPU part of the APU takes some of the system RAM for graphics processing.

    As I said above, I use the Core 2 Quad for the video editing and 3D graphics. The atom is for writing and web stuff (most of what brings the money in!). :)

    AMD supplied the APU for this "review" -- to myself and many others. I think they want to keep A8s in mind alongside newer product.

    The animations were done in Lightwave and composited in Adobe AfterEffects. They were done rather quickly (in about half a day) -- though I have been doing this kind of stuff for many years now! :) You could do this kind of stuff in a free package like Blender.

  • @ExplainingComputers

    Do you know, that is one of the next on my list! :) The APU here is very overclockabe, and hence I will be overclocking it in a video in the new year! :)

  • @ExplainingComputers
    @ExplainingComputers  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    It is one of the first 10,000rpm Western Digital raptors. And the 10,000 rpm speed does make them quite audible! :)

  • @ExplainingComputers
    @ExplainingComputers  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think the issue here is that the 10,000rpm Raptor I used here is SATA 1. Your 7200rpm drive may also be more modern, hence with a higher capacity, hence a higher data density, hence outperforming the Raptor (which in its day was the fastest disk on the market).

  • @ExplainingComputers
    @ExplainingComputers  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes, somewhere between 200 and 250 degrees C would melt the plastic. But the CPU would burn out way before that (somewhere around 70-80 degrees C).

    I use 2 PCs -- one is the Atom one I show in the "Building a Green PC" video here, which I do all of my writing and web stuff on. The other is currently a Core 2 Quad, used for video editing and 3D graphics. When this next blows up (all motherboards go eventually) I'll do a video of the rebuild, certainly. But I hope there is a good year in its motherboard yet! :)

  • @ExplainingComputers
    @ExplainingComputers  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    It hope it will be sometime in the Spring of 2013 -- I am currently busy writing another book (this time on 3D Printing), and focusing on a few new "ExplainingTheFuture" videos for my other channels. A Windows history video is also a challenge to see how many versions I can get working! :) PS: I like your MS DOS icon -- very cool! :)

    The reason for the slower RAM performance is because the APU uses the RAM for the video memory, too.

    The Arctic Freezer 7 Pro Rev.20 is £17.04 / $22.81 US at the time of writing on respective Amazons. I used it because AMD did not send me the stock cooler that comes "free" when you buy an AMD A8-3870K, and which would be perfectly sufficient. :)

    Yes, it is largely a green thing of now wanting to scrap functional kit (though the monitor is a quite new, 19w 5:4 model (1280x1024). Still most of my computing is writing, for which 4:3 or 5:4 screens are far more suited (which is why most offices still buy them). There is also the sheer agony of an upgrade! I will go to an i7 when my Core2Quad (or its motherboard) gives up! :) Though I recently upgraded the graphics card -- ses my "Graphics Card Upgrade" video! :)

  • @ExplainingComputers
    @ExplainingComputers  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Why?! It comes in a antistatic bag. Intel recommend that CPUs/APUs are fitted with the motherboard out of the case on an antistatic bag.
    Powering up a motherboard on an antistatic (conductive) bag would I accept be disasterous . . . :(

    AMD are typically better value for money, and as APUs are usually shown to handle 3D graphics better. Intel CPUs/APUs have a better reputation for media encoding performance, though I've not done tests of this myself.

    Hello ExplainingComputers! Great job with another intertesting vid, however you didn't cover up the crossfire between AMD's APU with ATI's GPU. Tbh there isn't much info out there on how the graphic boost works(is the performance increase ratio based on the gpu performance, does it work with all ati gpus, does the gpu work at a slower clockspeed like 2 graphicboards do in crossfire?)
    Do you think you can make a 2nd vid for this particular topic?
    Cheers!

    Ahhh, that makes sense. Yes I saw the GTX 650 upgrade video :)
    I'm currently running a Q6600 C2Q 2.4 but want to upgrade that at some point since it simply doesn't keep up for modern games and 1080p video exports are rather slow (also due to me not having editing software that takes advantage of GPU rendering). I'm rather interested in AMD's next FX processors coming out in Q4, supposedly better energy consumption than prev generations. If that flops, then an Intel i5 will do just fine too!

    I'm set to get this in the next few months, but I was wondering how the graphics card in this compares to what Nvidia makes. Which card of theirs would it compare to?

  • @ytjessaie
    @ytjessaie 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    The reason I believe is that current AMD apu's run RAM at significantly lower default clock if the board is full (1333 default) while on the intel side the RAM will run at the manufacturer's maximum rating (if my eyes were good this was 1600 RAM?). Also this varies but I have observed my gigabite MB setting clocks on my RAM much higher by default then when the same sticks were in a intel MB. Nevertheless, great video as always ! thanks.

    Would be a good update for this video using the Ryzen 3 2200 APU, which incorporates the VEGA 8 GPU onboard. This GPU is comparable with entry-level dedicated GPU like the Nvidia GTX 1030. I remember that you posted a video about the GTX 1030, so you already have the card to compare ;). Best regards.

    By cooling the APU further than the Celeron, you allow it to do more, when comapred to the same temerature as the celeron. Even though there is no contest between the two chips, just wanted to point it out. :)

    Got a Lenovo Think Pad Edge E545 with an AMD A10 5750M APU. That chip has a quad core CPU at 2.5 GHz that has turbo boost capable of up to 3.5 GHz. Mine runs around 3.2 GHz flat out and it has a Radeon 8650 GPU factory clocked at 720 MHz that I run at 1300 MHz all the time. Hasn't gotten hot yet thanks to some cooling upgrades. Works well but I really need to upgrade my RAM as I know it's holding me back right now due to it being shared between CPU and GPU. Minecraft runs around 20 FPS with light shaders and a 128x texture pack built to use the shaders at 1600x900. At that spec the GPU is only registering 45% to 55% usage. CPU also runs around 35% to 50% at the same time. Windows experience shows the RAM to be at 7.2 but I know it isn't fast enough for the GPU despite being dual channel because it's clocked at 667MHz. Need to get 16GB of 2 channel clocked at 1833MHz to max the bus speed out and get the most possible from this system. Run Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit to get the most possible from the OS.

  • @Alex2Buzz
    @Alex2Buzz 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    The memory performance is lower because it has a new motherboard with different memory connections. In addition, modern CPUs often incorporate the MC (Memory Controller, not Minecraft), meaning it might be a bit slower with a different CPU.

  • @ytjessaie
    @ytjessaie 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ty for the reply, that's quite interesting, I suspect you dont have the HW / time to see those again, but I wonder if the timings were the cause (like in my build) In case anyone wondering, I have manually lowered them and now have similar results to my intel counterpart build(a 2600K on gigabyte z68 UD3 board, same for my AMD) and now have similar results between both with still a slight advantage to the intel an no explanation for it

    No, you cannot replace laptop processors period. The only thing you can change on most laptops is RAM and hard-drive. Some will allow you to change optical drive and the CPU heatsink or fan. But you can't change things like the motherboard, CPU or graphics of a laptop.
    Some laptops happen to come with AMD APUs, but usually those are dual-cores and while the graphics are superior to Intel, the processing is slower in the laptops.
    This APU is for desktop CPUs, where you would also need an AMD mobo

  • @WhiteUmbra1
    @WhiteUmbra1 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Maybe someone's mentioned this already, but APU's seem to benefit from higher mhz ram e.g. 1866mhz. Although this is a budget build, even 1600mhz is not much of a stretch price-wise and should show higher performance.

  • @prayfortruejustice
    @prayfortruejustice 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    I though you might go into some depth on buss speeds, I/O, Graphics pipelines and CPU context switching (compute to graphics) etc... Does the APU configuration utilize it's own internal cache buffer and then the DRAM on the memory bus?

  • @ChrisFernaM
    @ChrisFernaM 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have a a6-3670k which has slightly less performance than the 3870k and i was able to overclock it to 3.6ghz. Note however that apu benefit greatly on the graphics by increasing the ram speed (mine is currently running at dual channel 1866mhz). Also the windows performance index is not that accurate but it does give you an estimated score of your overall computer's performance. My processor's score stands at 7.4 instead of your 7.3 which is quite interesting. But i guess it is due to the fact that you did not overclock it and it's running at default core speed. Overclock your cpu, and the gpu with ram and you'll see those windows index score and benchmark scores fly off the roof.

    I was surprised that my comouter seems low performing by what I expected. I have an FX 8350 (old, but still somewhat powerful) and a GTX 1070, which apparently sucks for 2D acceleration. My 3D numbers averaged 230fps, but 2D was like 9fps.

  • @arronth
    @arronth 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good video! It's just a shame you didn't use 1866Mhz RAM with the APU, from what I've read those chips really get a boost from the faster memory. But then again, I guess it is a budget system.

    • @ExplainingComputers
      @ExplainingComputers  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great to hear from a fan! :) Today most processors include a GPU of some sort. In theory there may be situations where what you suggest could happen. But in practice motherboards and their chip sockets and chip sets (that support the CPU and any GPU) change so frequently that it is very unlikely to be possible. In other words, a motherboard that supports a CPU with a GPU (what AMD call a APU) will have to be fitted with an APU already to work. Note that, to answer your specific question, Intel Celeron and AMD chips have always had different sockets and require different motherboards, so they cannot be exchange for one another.

    • @inspiredtiny
      @inspiredtiny 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I understand now Sir.. Intel and AMD chips require different motherboards because they have different sockets.. Thank you Sir!

  • @ehSnax
    @ehSnax 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    More specifically, you would need an FM1 socket for the A8-3870K. There are certain sockets for different families of CPUs. For instance, you could not use an AMD Phenom processor in an LGA 1155 socket that is designed for Intel Sandy and Ivy Bridge processors. Even not all Intel processors work with the same socket. There is socket 1155, 1150, 2011, 1366, and a few others, all of which designed for different Intel CPUs. AMD has FM1, FM2, AM3, AM3+ and a few others for different AMD CPUs. :)

    I still use totay @ 2017 my A8 3870 with an ASRock Board as media PC and it is ok with Win10. Surfing / TH-cam / Twitch and some games like Darkest Dungeon are no problem for the APU.

  • @krist0sh
    @krist0sh 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    I used it with my E8500 for a while, but did not overclock it due to motherboard limitations. I changed it over to my i5 2400, but still did not overclock it, and it's now in my projector PC with a E7500, though , not overclocked. But I can, if I have the time. I'm currently using a GTX480, as it's the most powerful GPU I have for hand, but my other secondary computers are using AMD GPU's, and they work very well.
