GT 1030 is a good card for a true 4K 60Hz HTPC/Media setup over HDMI. Especially if looking for a Low profile half height card. Also make sure its the GDDR5. Not the SDDR4 version that severely cripples the performance of the GT 1030 card. The MSI GT 1030 does away with the outdated DVI and has HDMI/Display Port.
My MSI GT 1030 ($68USD) has 2 HDMI ports. It is in an HP Z210 SFF box (Running two monitors @ 1080p). Moving up to an SFF RX560 isn't an option at the prices people are wanting for it.
I recently got a GT 1030 GDDR5 version brand new from my local microcenter for just $60 (it was on clearance as they were dumping some of their old stock), and for the purpose in which I used it, I would say it's simply amazing. I acquired a brand new small form factor HP desktop that has a i5 2400 and 8gbs of ram for $20 at my local thrift store a month earlier, and I planned to upgrade it and give to a relative who I thought would be interested in getting into computer gaming. The card made the computer capable of playing most games (albeit on lower settings) and watch 4k 60fps videos on TH-cam with ease. It's definitely worth it when it comes to upgrading a old sandy bridge computer into a gaming capable machine for yourself, relative, or friend. I wouldn't call the GT-1030 bad at all.
the reason I'm considering this is because I want a cheap esports/older games pc, and anything higher end than the 1030 would be useless because it would be cpu bond by the old i3 in this office pc
I recently converted an old Dell server into a 'gaming PC' (I had an incredibly tight budget) and it made a lot more sense to buy a used 760 than to buy either of these cards. The TDP meant a new power supply but I still spent less than buying one of these new, and the gaming performance is a fair bit better.
Except AMD integrated graphics destroys the GT 1030 DDR4 version (and the “better” GT1030 is barely winning). Intel is the only one that loses. (My Intel potato graphics would disagree but it’s too busy rendering the next frame)

Yup. This is pretty much the only reason why I need this graphics card. I have an Intel i5 system without integrated graphics that I want to use for a retro gaming rig, so I was hoping that I could use the GT 710 to connect to my 4k TV, but it looks like I'm going to need to buy the 1030.
I actually bought a gt 1030 for a low profile optiplex and another consideration, other than the cost, was how much power it draws. The optiplex i have has a very low power power supply (180w) so I had to look for a graphics card which not only gave me ok performance but also only pulled about 30w
The 1030 got me into PC gaming! I bought a used i3 550 pc for £50, then added a 1030 and found it could play games. Discovered Borderlands and the rest is history. Could even play Doom at 720p!

Yeah, ask just about anyone on Dell support forums for SFF PCs and they'll recommend a 1030. You need something that's a) low profile, b) low wattage, c) quiet, d) cheap. "But an XYZ is way faster!" is like telling someone to fit a 6-litre V12 in their Ford Fiesta.
@@chilly3528 Well mine is the DDR3 version and I still love it because it does a spectacular job doing a 4K display and works really well with the games I enjoy like Doom (not the new one) and the Serious Sam series. Every card can do at least one thing well and this one does more than that :D
The gt1030 has allowed my to continue playing my only pc game, Star Trek online, without having to deal with the insane utility prices here in the UK at present.
I think that the Nvidia T400 is a much better card for the lowest-end budget systems. It can be bought for around $100, has GDDR6 2GB VRAM, and works quite well for its low power consumption of just 30W.
My friend wanted to upgrade from a r7 250 1gb to a gt 1030. So i told him to save a bit more money and buy a used rx570. He said and i quote:"yeah but the 90$ gt 1030 is a better deal and can run fortnite at 60fps at high settings. I tought you knew more about computers." Why god.
I bought the 1030 purely for the 4K output for my work-from-home PC. Don't plan on doing any gaming on it. My work PC has a 3rd gen i7 that does not support 4K60 so I plugged a 4K monitor and a 1080p monitor into the 1030 and used onboard graphics for the 3rd monitor (1080p). Had to enable both iGPU and dGPU concurrency in the BIOS. Works a treat.
What was trying to be achieved: Don't buy a 1030 What was achieved: 1030 is a much better card than a 710 for double the price. Should you buy a 1030: Yes. (For moderate gaming, don't expect 240 fps) It's a decent card. If a card gets over 25 fps it's acceptable.
1030 is for a very specific situation, slime case that doesn`t require additional power connector. I got one for a slim home media center where the gaming cards are not feasible
It may not great for a regular PC build but I frequently get requests to upgrade SFF computers that people buy off lease. Low Power, Low Profile video are important considerations. It may not be interesting enough for a whole video but a comparison of LP/LP cards for upgrading SFF computers with those power supplies that aren't easily upgraded, it would probably be interesting for those in that situation. Been using GT 710/730 , R7 240 and HD 5450, but I guess I can look at 1030s for people that don't mind paying extra. They all will be better then the integrated Intel graphics they come with.
i still stand by the fact that the gt1030 really isnt that bad, if your gaming needs are low (aka esports games, or basically any game pre 2013) and you need something low profile and low powered, this really isnt a bad option. now if you have a tower with a 350w psu or above, just get a used 1050ti, its going to destroy the gt1030.

I wanted a fanless card and there weren't many of those in the half-height size to choose from. It works great in my HP SFF PC-turned HTPC. It may not be recommended for the newest AAA games, but it's a GPU that works pretty well considering it only sips 30 watts of power.
Funny enough, my friend has an old workstation pc and uses integrated graphics for games like valorant, csgo, and other esports titles, and I think this would actually be a good upgrade for him
I HAVE that Dell optiplex with the 1030. It got refurbished/rebranded as a gaming pc. They put this oddball rgb pannel in the front, gave it 16gb ram, an ssd and called it a day. You have to tweak a few things, but even demanding games are perfectly playable. I think its the motherboard itself, but i have a working VGA output, so i can run the extra display if i want. i believe i did in fact get ripped off in the end, as the base model does all the same stuff for less money, but the total cost was still around 600 usd.
I can see your point. I bought a gt 1030 for a low profile computer I was working on at the time. Without going into details it performed above and beyond for me. I should also mention at the time I was way behind on using modern monitors and the DVI display was more than enough.
Hi, Ive just bought a version of the GT1030 which you haven't mentioned, which has the addition of a Display Port output supporting up to 16K , so I would argue that particular iteration is perfect for folks wanting alot of Pixels but not necessarily Gamers .
I used the 710 as an office computer card. Had loads of issues with all three machines. I needed a low profile dual monitor card. The 710 wasn't powerful enough, had black screens and flickering issues. The 1030 works perfectly and is noticeably faster with the I5 CPU. My recommendation for a low profile dual monitor card go with the 1030 card.
Had a perfect use case for 2 x Gt 1030s a couple of years ago. Wife got some old i5s from her work with 8GB DDR3 ram. My boys had 720p monitors. But they wanted to play latest games. At 720p almost every single game they played were butter smooth. And I picked them up brand new, at the time, for the equivalent of $65.
So the funny thing is that I have a low profile dell optiplex that can only fit a gt 1030 as the best graphics card available. I also have a 4k display and play games. It runs minecraft at 60fps at 4k and all new games brilliantly at 1080p medium settings. Despite what people say, I have actually found this card to be really capable. Also, I was laughing at myself when you were saying the really specific use cases that there are, with every single one applying to me!
Nope you have 2 other choices : 1) Nvidia Quadro P620 (Pascal architecture ): 40 watts GDDR5 more texture fill rate etc 2) Nvidia Quadro T400 sometimes called mini RTX 400 (Turing architecture ): 30 watts GDDR6 even more texture fill rate and speed bus etc.
I went from a Radeon HD 5450 to a GT 710. That was an immense jump. Currently looking to jump to a GT 1030 but can't find an affordable one ATM. That will be another immense jump. Yes. I have a potato.
i don't know if i'm looking at the wrong things, but afaik, if you have a thinner PC case, and you have to use the low profile bracket for the GT 710, you also only getting 2 outputs anyways, the GT 1030 also comes with a low profile bracket, and it also only have 2 outputs.
If you really need the VGA port and don't mind taking up an extra expansion card slot, the 710's come with 2 LP brackets: one that holds the DVI and HDMI ports, and a second bracket that holds the VGA port.
I went from a 2014 apu to the 1030, it was a huge performance increase so i was very happy. A few years later i went from the 1030 to a 1650, once a gain a huge performance increase so i was very happy. This year i went from the 1650 to a 3060 12gb, couldn't be more happy. 99% of internet said the 1030 sucks, same for the 1650 and even with the 3060 'i should have gotten the Ti'. (Even though the price difference between the 12 gb and Ti is 400 euro, that's a 90% difference, the ti does not perform 90% better so actually the ti is less fps per euro but whatevaah) Conclusion: don't get distracted by other people's opinion, it all depends on your upgrade path. Search for benchmarks instead of opinions, keep your expectations in check and you'll be fine!
You missed one other compelling use case - computer as an all-in-one media center. The GT/GTX 10-series is Netflix 4K supported; currently the only AMD card that’s supported is the 5700XT. So for a budget productivity station that you also want to use for your media access you’re looking at a $90 GPU or one costing several times that.

Same 100th like
GT 1030 is a good card for a true 4K 60Hz HTPC/Media setup over HDMI.
It's decent as long you don't play new AAA games
the reason I'm considering this is because I want a cheap esports/older games pc, and anything higher end than the 1030 would be useless because it would be cpu bond by the old i3 in this office pc

Nope you have 2 other choices :
1) Nvidia Quadro P620 (Pascal architecture ): 40 watts GDDR5 more texture fill rate etc
2) Nvidia Quadro T400 sometimes called mini RTX 400 (Turing architecture ): 30 watts GDDR6 even more texture fill rate and speed bus etc.

i don't know if i'm looking at the wrong things, but afaik, if you have a thinner PC case, and you have to use the low profile bracket for the GT 710, you also only getting 2 outputs anyways, the GT 1030 also comes with a low profile bracket, and it also only have 2 outputs.
(Even though the price difference between the 12 gb and Ti is 400 euro, that's a 90% difference, the ti does not perform 90% better so actually the ti is less fps per euro but whatevaah)
Conclusion: don't get distracted by other people's opinion, it all depends on your upgrade path.
