The workmanship on that is awesome. Did you see the edge of the mainspring? It's fluted. It's decorative...on the inside...where it's not visible 99% of the time. And that seriously swamped barrel...holy cow that's hard to do properly. That's amazing. And it belonged to the Esterhazy family, which makes it hugely historical. 60 grains under a .63 caliber ball should drop anything in Central Europe.
Previously the only thing I knew about the Esterhazy family was that Joseph Haydn spent most of his career as the family's court composer. This was a fascinating video from several perspectives.

American rifle design was to suit the game/threat. The Atlantic states had little large game. The largest being the deer and occasional brown bear. But also squirrel. Hunting was principally on foot having arrived on horseback. Supplies were indeed a consideration. But the conditions also suited the lighter arm and calibre with a long sight radius. When the west opened there were found the buffalo, grizzly bears, elk, moose and native american tribes that took exception to that trespass on their land. Travel was on horseback in large hunting or exploring groups with pack trains. The environment demanded a large bore, heavy rifle with a shorter barrel. And, many have hundreds of miles from any trading post, the rifles had to be sturdy to survive rough handling. Hence to mountain or plains rifle.

Love your channel. I've been hunting Pennsylvania with a Flintlock for 42 years. I've taken many Whitetail deer with it and it is more enjoyable to me than any other style of hunting. I currently have a Lyman, but eventually plan on building a Christopher Guist style Pennsylvania Flintlock rifle.

Enjoyed the complete explanation for load development, the use of the rifle and its limitations to hunting. We do not have proof houses here in the USA-very cool to see how that works. When I built my Pennsylvania flintlock rifle I loaded a triple charge and tied it to a tire and used a long string to fire it.:)
Hey cap and ball. Here's a very long winded comment about a loading trick if you care to read it. I shoot a generic run of the mill percussion .54 TC renegade with 29" green mountain slow twist ball barrel. So- here's the trick. I drilled a hole about an inch deep in the ball end of my short starter. It's like yours a round wood ball about two inches in diameter. A standard mass produced cheap starter. The hole I drilled is large enough to easily fit over the end of my rifles 3/8ths ramrod. To load, I set precut patch then ball with sprue up on the muzzle, normal fashion just like you. I grab the short starter out of my bag, set the short end on the ball and WHAP! start the ball in the barrel. Stick the long starter atop the ball and WHAP! drive the ball down a few inches. Same as you do it in this video. But where I do it different - to seat the ball on the powder- I pull the ramrod, do NOT flip it, drop it down on the ball, and insert the upper end of the rod in the hole I drilled in the short starter. WHOOSH!! in one powerful slap drive the ball down on the powder, and give it one last smack to ensure ball is solid against powder. Reseat rod, cap and fire as usual. So, to do this without having to flip the rod twice, I ground down the widdened edge of the starter end of my ramrod so it slides down the barrel pipes. That way I don't have to flip the rod over twice for each shot. Plus I use a tough hickory rod made from the same hickory I use for heavy arrows that is very straight grained so it will bend and not split. Plus, with my rifle being 29" I can get the starter over the end of the rod and slam the ball down the barrel with the palm of my hand. No hand over handing it. Works great for me and is REAL fast. Just thought I'd mention this. Thanks for all the vids over the years.

I have to say when I looked at the rifle at the very beginning of the video I could have sworn you were holding a Hawken .50 caliber rifle. The only real difference that I would say was really obvious would be the style of the lands and grooves of the rifling of these two rifles. I have a .50 caliber Hawken that was made in the mid 1970s and a hand made Kentucky rifle in .36 caliber made somewhere at the turn of the 20th century around 1900. Both of my rifles are capable of 1/2" to 1" groups at both 50 and 100 yards using simple leaf front post and square notch rear sights graduated out to 300 yards. I love to shoot black powder and don't shoot nearly as often as I did when I was younger. I have hunted with both rifles where I live and have missed shots with these rifles only when I made a mistake which was not often. I know some guys who think having the latest and baddest new rifles is the best thing to have but somehow shooting a single shot black powder rifle makes you a much better marksman because you want and need your shot to count because most of the time it is going to be the only shot you get. I am glad that I ran across your channel a few years ago and I love the way you go into the details of what you are presenting as the subject. Not too many channels can do what you do and you are great at what you do. I hope to continue to watch your content in the future and thanks again.
Hello, I was going to look at the information on the stadia you had for sale, but it's not on your eBay store.:-( I can look around in the stores in the USA. Nice ramrod. I would probably break it out in the woods hunting. I keep my hickory ramrod in the pipes. I also streamlined my loading by just using the ramrod to set/start, get it though the tighter front and ram it home. You just have to have good hand position At firs very close to the ramrod tip and the about 8" up and finally your normal loading position.
24:30 How come you do not have a clamp for the base of your drill press? I lost a couple fingernails over the years doing what you are doing. I just cringed when I saw (ha) this.

1:31 inches is a really fast twist rate for a .63 caliber round ball rifle.. Im surprised at the accuracy you were getting with patched round balls in such a fast bore.. Do you have a video on twist rates on these original european muzzle loaders? Would like to hear your thoughts on the subject.. This rifle would probably shoot Conicals really well..
Gorgeous thank you for displaying this. A question for anyone does anyone know of a maker of carbine or sneck hooks accurate to a 17thc type? They were used by cavalry who were equipped with arquebuse and the hook is fixed to a steel bar held on the gun by the lockplate screws to a baldrick. They are very reminiscent of modern day caribeans used in many applications such as boats to mountain climbing.

Yes and no. The grooves are very deep at the muzzle and become much shallower soon. That was done to make loading easier, it has some kind of "funnel" effect.
Hey! Small question. I've been to a few muzzleloader shooting events, and I've always wondered why everyone loaded their weapons with a separate, big ramrod like the one you have in this video, instead of using the one that's already on the rifle. Does it actually make a difference?

Those rifling grooves are insane lol, could fit a .22 in one groove. Wonder how much gas is lost travelling around the patch and ball

Hey! Small question. I've been to a few muzzleloader shooting events, and I've always wondered why everyone loaded their weapons with a separate, big ramrod like the one you have in this video, instead of using the one that's already on the rifle. Does it actually make a difference?
