      I believe the artist was trying to go for a very weird/shocking realistic vibe from that artwork, I personally don't think its badly drawed, but it definately is not everyone's cup of tea

      LMAO I couldn’t agree more! I feel like it’s toned down a bit now but in the 90s especially it was everywhere. Not just in comics but in the corny action movies too like Commando, Rambo etc (I actually like those movies sadly ha ha). Seriously, I feel like the 80s and 90s can be called the era of muscles lol

      Now, if you follow modern bodybuilding, the bodybuilders of today are pretty unproportional compared to those of the 70s and 80s, so Liefeld could be considered ahead of his time.

    • @FoxGuyGames
      @FoxGuyGames 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      either way it was not point to decide whether or not something was or was not sexual, my point was that if you are going to make a video about "bad artwork" in relation to a video about "good artwork", then whats with all the "it looks like dicks artwork"? there is plenty of poorly drawn comic covers out there and he only talked about like 3 of them, the rest were just childish observations of sexually implied art. there is a difference between bad artwork and bad concept, dicklike objects and sexual siutations are indicative of bad concept whereas Rob Liefeld is indicative of bad artwork lmao

    Males swimming together nude would not have been seen as a gay thing at the time. Males swimming naked together was just how guys swam a lot of the time, especially when there were no women around (although sometimes school swimming competitions would have males swim naked, even when there were both males and females watching). Males swimming naked together even lasted in some YMCAs up until around the 1970s. It was not considered either gay or erotic. Instead, one might consider it to be a little embarrassing, which is why Superman and Batman are giving each other that look. It's not a "should we really do a gay thing" or "should we do a pedophile thing" kind of question, but "should we actually be embarrassingly naked"?

    I have to disagree on some of these, the older books especially. The Rifleman one, that western was a long running show still in syndication now, and it was a father and son family friendly series. The cover looks like an unfortunate accident, no ill intention. The Superman book, yeah, it looks bad to us, but 60 years ago it was just a comic book cover trying to stand out on the magazine racks of grocery stores and newsstands. I really don't think the artists or anyone else involved had pervy intent, but unfortunately people see things differently in our society where even comics can be fetishized.
    The only comic I'm aware of that does make one think, is Wonder Woman (in the 40s, especially). If she were tied up with her lasso, she'd lose her powers, there was spankings in the books, her creator was an open relationship sort of guy, lived with two women and created the prototype for what became the lie detector.
    William Marston, Marston's "Wonder Woman" is an early example of bondage themes that were entering popular culture in the 1930s.
    Physical and mental submission appears again and again throughout Marston's comics work, with Wonder Woman and her criminal opponents frequently being tied up (or otherwise restrained), and her Amazonian sisters engaging in frequent wrestling and bondage play. These elements were softened by later writers of the series, who dropped such characters as the Nazi-like blond female slaver Eviless completely, despite her having formed the original Villainy Inc. of Wonder Woman's enemies (in Wonder Woman#28, the last by Marston.)
    Though Marston had described female nature as being more capable of submission emotion, in his other writings and interviews, he referred to submission as a noble practice and did not shy away from the sexual implications, saying:
    "The only hope for peace is to teach people who are full of pep and unbound force to enjoy being bound... Only when the control of self by others is more pleasant than the unbound assertion of self in human relationships can we hope for a stable, peaceful human society... Giving to others, being controlled by them, submitting to other people cannot possibly be enjoyable without a strong erotic element."
    So, yeah. I believe most covers are bad art or unfortunate accidents, but once in a while there's a William Marston.
    en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Moulton_Marston
    As far as phallic covers go, during the WW2 era, many heroes, male and female were depicted riding bombs, missles or battleship guns.
    The "Slap a Jap" cover was just DC trying to be patriotic and propaganda at the same time, it was a product of it's time. Remember, 1941 Pearl Harbor, people were pissed and angry at Japan, the government ordered all Japanese American families into camps for the duration of the war, it's sad and unfortunate that it happened, but times have changed. Loony Tunes and Disney made propaganda as well, a lot of it here on YT.
    Think of those comics during the war, the kids reading them, they gave kids hope that they'd be safe from an enemy they thought could kill them at any time. They are a part of our culture, our history.
    The little Lulu cover, seriously? The fat kid blew the tires out on the tri-cycle and it's doing a wheelie and she's trying to pedal!
    Sometimes a comic cover is just a comic cover.

      @Dante19883  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi there, thank you for that elaborate comment. I’m very aware of the historical context behind all of these covers and I am very well aware that many of these were not meant to have innuendo or underlying meanings... Times have changed significantly since many of these covers were published and it it can be funny to look at something with today’s standards. Thank you for watching and commenting

      Well put me personally. Ive always veiw wonder womans weaknesses to being bound by a man as social commentary about how women were "bound" in that time period by what men thought they should be the whole in the kitchen bare foot and pregnant mentality of old which in my opinion is what lead to the manhating radical feminists we have now.

    I know it's so cool to hate Liefeld...and boy howdy does some of his work deserve the hatred...like the mentioned Cap run....but overall I don't think his work is nearly as bad as the cool, hip, edgy comic book fans like to portray it as. He's a scapegoat. I genuinely enjoy his X-Force and Youngblood work.
    Honestly, of this list, that Wolverine cover is by far the worst.

    Eh, I loved Sue Richards 90s costume. I'm not a fan of looking at Sue as a "mommy figure" as her stories with Black Panther& Namor suggested she isn't receiving enough attention from Reed Richards...and is a very attractive woman too.

    • @Dante19883
      @Dante19883  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @LowellLucasJr.
      @LowellLucasJr. 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Geekery with Dante D. Yeah I definitely recommend them. Mainly, because they gave Sue some good depth about her 'almost' flirtatious attitude and some of the tension that causes some of the men that knew how beautiful she truly is. Though they did give her enough loyalty to stay with her husband, there's been many points were she could have easily left Reed Richards( way before they hinted this in Venture Brothers parody many many times). Heck there's even a What If issue where Sue leaves Reed Richards for Namor and he seems cool about it

    In all fairness, the problem wasn't with the "Giant Size" books. It's that Conway, Thomas, and Morrow named their creation "Man-Thing". I found myself giggling like a twelve year-old when I heard you say that you're a pretty big fan of the Man-Thing. The name "Man-Thing" is just so inherently phallic that there were going to be problems.

    • @Dante19883
      @Dante19883  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh for sure! I know there wasn’t any ill intention with the cover, but it’s interesting what you can see when you analyze these covers with varying perspectives. You liked liefeld in the late 80s early 90s because he wasn't doing his own artwork he was being directed panel-by-panel. Marvel had this kid on a leash and the cross hatch shading style with bold borders and shiny muscle definition he was emulating was something that Jim lee made famous and liefeld was the closest to it at the time Marvel execs were so old they didn't know what was going on and could barely tell the difference so liefeld picked up some of the slack because they can't have Jim Lee doing every damn book it was too much. When he broke off and started doing his own shit that's when you really see his true colors shine and it's crap. I believe if it wasn't for crap artists like him stirring up shitted at Marvel we would have had years of good artwork still coming through the nineties instead we had image comic books.

    Art in any form should be appreciated, and due credit should be given to the artists for their time and effort. Comic book art should not be taken so seriously. They are not trying to be the next Rembrandt or a Picasso. What according to you is a "bad comic book cover" might be the artist best effort. If you don't like it, don't buy it.
