  • Today we are taking a look at the Yakovlev 141 Freestyle VTOL Jet developed during the Cold War by the Soviet Union. This aircraft was designed meticulously and eventually led to the development of the American F-35 Lightning II. How is it responsible for an American jet you may ask? Watch the video and you will find out.

Topic very well explained, good audio quality, good / illustrative videos used and the channel still has only 634 subscribers?

It does look very similar to a Mig-31. They came very close to a usable aircraft too. It'd be interesting to know how much of the data and development information went towards the F-35.
Thanks for another great video 👍

not a lot, while lockheed did get information from yak141 testing and development, theres not much evidence that any of it was actually used in the development of the f35

VTOL capability for a fixed wing platform adds expense and complexity, negatively affects range and payload capacity, and contributes to pilot task overload. As with any jet capable of ingesting a man, FOD is a constant threat; imagine trying to keep a landing spot full of mud, rocks, and plants, clean enough to safely operate fixed wing jets. It's hard enough to keep clean paved runways and carrier flight decks as it is. Imagining one could do it with a jungle clearing or desert flat seems ingenuous.
Vodka might help fuel genius, but it's bad for engineers.

Какой бред несет этот американишка! У ЯК-141 крыло складывается, это было одно из требований руководства к бюро Яковлева, ведь на авианосце места не бесконечно!

@@AyanFox hi there, think you may have misunderstood Mr Cox. In the west we refer to helicopters as rotary wing aircraft and airplanes as fixed wing, even if their wings do fold for stowage.
      Greetings from the UK.

@@stuartthornton3027 Оk, в СНГ вертолеты и самолеты так не именуют.
