Do you know why they didn't use the most modern fighter jet for the last Top Gun movie?
A lot of moviegoers questioned why producer Jerry Bruckheimer didn't use the latest, most modern fighter jet in the Top Gun movie, such as the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning. Showcasing America's latest technology. The primary reason, the F-35 only comes as a single-seater, which would have made shooting the actors very difficult and primarily use visual effects to compensate. Therefore they decided to use the Boeing F-18 F two-seater, mounting the cameras on the back of the pilot seat.

I would imagine the F-35 is still extremely classified as well.
F-35 interior isn't classified anymore except for certain screens, which you would have turned off while filming. The f22 is a bit less open as the interior can only be filmed/taken picture off from a rear view. Looking out of the plane and not seeing the interior screens or with the plane turned off so all you see is black screens.
Tell that to the chinese and war thunder players
The F35 isn’t classified anymore besides some holographic screens that remain a total secret. F22 has more classified parts and features. The F35c is probably too small to even have good cameras

Here's why they didn't use:
1. Operating costs will buy you 7 Bugattis.
2. The budget was blown on Tom Cruise's salary. 💀💀
he got a 20 mil check from the movie and the entire budget was 177 mil. plus the operating cost for the f35 is essentially the same as the f14 which was in the movie. there are no financial reasons for the f35 not being in the movie. the cost per year is 7.5 million for the most expensive version of the f35, you cannot buy 7 Bugatti's for that. they wouldn't be using it for a year either.
They’re also a pain in the ass to maintain after each flight. Necessary when training and fighting. Unnecessary when filming a movie that might bomb the box office.
F35 Oeration cost is only $42k per flight hour and Bugatti cost around $2mil

One of the story elements was 'It's not the plane, it's the pilot.' which I'd imagine is partly why they went for the slightly older Super Hornet.
There a little bit of chicken or the egg there. The reason they so heavily emphasized that theme could have been because they had to use the F18s.
I’ve a gut feeling it was intentional, because I think the older planes (the F14 in particular) are symbolic of Maverick himself being older.

@jpalmer999 correct, they also decided to use the f-18 bcuz in the second seat there was no classified avionics as if there were going to to the f-35, all the classified avionics were all in one spot and easy to see.

GPS jamming is not much of a problem these jets have a clever system that allows them to navigate based on the jet working out where it is by using its sensors and having its position entered at the start of the flight and it then uses all of this information to calculate where it is in real time.

GPS jamming would have still effected the super hornet. I don't like that point because it makes no sense. Both jets would have run off of some sort of INS in that scenario, and would have used laser guided munitions which don't care about GPS.

There's also the small problem of the fact that the Navy has only deployed two squadrons of the F35C and the first deployment of the plane occurred AFTER the filming was already complete. :P

Yeah there are many reasons why they didnt use the F35. Maybe also because the US airforce and top brass has deemed the F-35 a monumental failure unsuitable for exactly these kind of operations.
And the fact that there is no way in hell they would have let Tom Cruze actually fly one himself. Nor would they like the idea that its flying characteristics would be out in a movie for all to see. And they certainly would not stand for it being criticised... Or shot down.
They explain in the movie that there is countless radar jammers leaving the munitions of the F35 obsolete. Not sure if that would be the case in RL but it was the case in the script lol

It was designed for lobbing long range BVR missile while not being seen while doing other thing such as dropping guided bombs instead of specifically dogfighting (although yes it could do that if needed to)

I believe the enemy was suppose to be Iran. As they have F14s active and have shown interest in buying the su57 in the past. Also the terrain does match Iran.

The F35 is the worst fighter aircraft ever made. It can't dog fight Russia and China can already detect it, its weapons load is tiny and only one version has an internal gun. The other versions have to use external gunpods. That limit weapons that can be carried even further if installed.

The F-38B was the machine which flew into the helicarrier and unloaded on the hulk with its Gatling gun. (Somehow it seemed to fit, so we really did not notice.)
Actually if the dark star plane in the beginning was real, that would be the most advanced, but I don’t know how you would reliably bomb targets moving at Mach 10. Then again, what do I know? For all I know, the pentagon has actually been developing that plane.

The man is an experienced pilot and has flown jets before, but the law states that no civilian is allowed under any circumstances, to fly a military Jet. Check your facts before talking. Again it had absolutely nothing to do with trust.

I remember reading an article that discusses why extras who have lines have to join a union if they're a part of a major motion picture and why in films like Whiplash, the band members who speak were the only ones who weren't real musicians.

I don't think the Growler can use the laser guided bombs like the Supers; I've never seen my AOs strap them to my jets.
Plus the jammer pods are heavy; those jets wouldn't have made it over the ridge carrying that weight.

I don’t understand why they didn’t launch HARM missiles against the SAM site radars right before the F-18s entered the canyon. It’s not like they needed the element of surprise, they had launched a flurry of cruise missiles at the nearby airbase. Which would have tipped off anybody with a brain what the next target was going to be since that base was providing air cover for the secret research lab. Yes it makes it more suspenseful in the movie, but even a civilian like me was questioning the plan.

Well the other reason was the US Navy said they could not have all of the up close access to the F-35 that they wanted and needed. The F-35 is a much more classified system than the FA-18e/f. That some models of FA-18 are 2 seat was just an added bonus.
Nah, i think the main reason is the F18 is a way more appropriate fighter for the top gun series than the F35. It compliments the first movie, adds a ton of tension when it faces the SU57 and like others have said here, its a good metaphor for maverick himself.
Also the F35 just looks clunky imo.
Let’s surround our F35s with a huge number of digital IMAX cameras so that the Chinese can reverse engineer every single component.
How would showing the cockpit allow anyone to reverse engineer it? It's just screens and buttons, you won't see mechanical parts or how the equipments are programmed or wired or how the special paint works

When they made the original movie in the 80’s, it featured the F-14 Tomcat. However the F-18 Hornet was already a thing back then. So they already had precedent for using the older jet for the movie
Super Hornet did not exist at time if original top gun. First flight of the rhino was almost ten years later.
There was a single line spoken about this in the film when they call in Maverick to give him the mission details and ask for his input. He says "well... Normally this would be a cakewalk for the f-35 stealth, but gps jamming negates that."
Whatever that means.

I never understood that, because in both the practice run and the actual run, we see Maverick and then Rooster do both the flying and the targeting, so I didn't understand why we needed 2 person f-18s

The F35 only comes in single seat configuration. Not possible to shoot live while flying, something TC made abundantly clear was an absolute must for TGM.
From US Navy inventory the answer is clear: carrier-based F35 is not ready yet, and even longer time needed to have pilots with experience flying them in real operations.
On the other hand, Maverick seemed to have had sufficient experience with F18 since the events in the first film.
As TGM was filmed in 2018 and 19, the F35 was not actually ready as it was still under development when it (TGM) was being filmed. The F18 was ready to film then.
Incorrect. The B and C were both operational. The C achieved IOC in February 2019.
Correct. The F35 wasn’t cleared for full capacity operation nor was it in large enough numbers like the more capable Super Hornet. Which had two seats and was available in large numbers.
ACTUALLY: The cameras are in the front seat, filming the back seat, where the actors actually were, since they weren’t actually in control of the airplane, they were in control of the cameras. And in the front seat there was a real fighter jet pilot

It also has to do with the type of operation. The very aggressive flying would have made the targeting much more difficult to hit the target during the execution of the mission. It requires the 2 seater F-18.
Also imagine the operating costs for those things.

They could've easily built a mockup cockpit to stimulate being in a F-35, like they did with the Darkstar. Just have it attached to the centrifuge to stimulate the appearance of G-Forfe effects.

Looks like Lockheed’s Skunkworks used the movie as a cover for another vehicle.
Also, they did kinda go over this is the movie. The base has systems to scramble their middle guidance, it’s why the didn’t just drop a ton of bombs on the thing.
It was actually revealed why as they director still wanted a step up to the next gen past fighters like the F-14 used in the previous movie, sure this is a reason along with many others but it just fits the storyline. The first movie is set in the Cold War which gives us the timeframe of mid 1980s while Top Gun Maverick is set it the late 2010 to early 2020, we are also told that Maverick is 24 in the years old in the first movie given that there’s a 30 year gap between the movies already it means that maverick would be a 54 year old man flying in the top of the airforce, which lets be honest is unrealistic hence the F-18s which dampen down that age gap between Mav and the younger pilots.
Also no one wanted to let Tom Cruz do his own piloting stunts in an F-16

The F35 is actually a quite competent dogfighter. It’s kinematics are similar to that of the F16, but with higher AOA capability and faster acceleration. Early poor maneuverability was caused by intentionally restricted control software. The reason the F35 was not used was because it has no two seater variant.

Many folks confuse air superiority with dogfighters. Honestly the F-16 wasn't a dogfighter but is great at it. The F-15 was designed to be closer to a dogfighter but is still more of an air superiority fighter.
In reading about the cronyism involved on the F-35, IMO- it will never be what it is/was supposed to be or become a reliable weapon.

F-35s are single seaters & F-18s are double seaters. Using 35s takes away a lot of the dialogue.

The F-18 (and all it's variants) is still the Navy's primary fighter and attack aircraft. F-35 still only has a minor role in terms of overall fleet deployment. (Numbers aren't there yet.) So there's that too.
Well that is true. But I figure they could have had the actors sitted in the F-18s while they superimpose it with the F-35 for the exterior shots, pretty much like the Darkstar takeoff scene, where it was done with F-18 but they superimpose it with the Darkstar. Also with the F-14 scenes as well, in actuality Tom & Miles were in F-18s, but the exterior flight scenes it was superimpose with the F-14.

Incorrect. The primary reason is that there are no two seat F-35Cs. Cruise required that the actors be filmed actually flying and pulling Gs thus they were put in the back of a F/A-18F so that could be done.

Second, I was involved in meetings in the defense department about this exact issue. Would you like to join me for another meeting where we discuss this with the people who are in a position to speak intelligently about it? Not spew some opinion they have, actually know. Would that be enough to 'correct' your 'incorrect' opinion? If you're nice you can get a tour of the Pentagon while you are there.

All the other reasons are bullshit, They needed the two seat version of the Hornet (the F/A-18F specifically) to put the actors in the back seat to film. Every scene of Tom "flying" is actually him in the rear seat riding while the real pilot flies. They also had to operate and troubleshoot their own cameras.
Because Jerry had absolutely no say in it and Tom very specifically asked for thr F/A-18 because its iconic.
The F-14 is iconic. The F-18 is, well... meh.

It was a nice plot device but completely unrealistic. Still enjoyed the movie.
The fact that TG Maverick's principle filming took place in 2018, and the USN F-35C did not become operational until 2019 may have had some bearing on the situation...

@@Only_God_Is_Allah_SWT Tom Cruise is the kinda guy that would want the actors doing the action as much as contractually possible. Even if it means sticking them in the cockpits and catching them strain to the G-force (tho seasoned pilots probably wouldnt be as visibly uncomfortable with the Gs as the actors were)
That's lame, and a huge amount of the marketing was about how the actors are going through real Gs

F-22 Raptors aren't carrier based so you won't find them flying over or near naval fleets.

One more reason is information regarding aircraft tech. In the movie itself, ATFLIR was used instead of Litening Pod, Guns locked on the target like a missile and there was no use of JHMCS, which might look cool in the movie but in real life modern situations, these would be pointless. The reason behind this is because if they show the exact working of F-18, it would be a breach of information as hostiles can gain knowledge regarding that
I'd also imagine it being slightly more difficult to fly the F-35 with the actors in the only seats.
Also, I’m pretty sure they said in the movie that the defenses had something to fry an F-35’s targeting system while Maverick first came to the mission
I could imagine that the decision which jet they used was made before they wrote the script

They explained in the movie why the F-18 was the go-to for the mission.
...Which is a very lame reason, but I'm grateful for it.

@@MAC-0 wish they showed the F22 or F35 at least once though. Hangman or someone who went in for backup could've been in one for air cover at the end. Since it's minimal camera time they could've made the actor still look like he's inside with editing.
