I came upon your video just by accident and loved it. I have 25 quilt tops that need to be quilted. I can't afford the prices of having a long armer do them and don't have the space to baste them on the floor. (Can't now as I just had a hip replacement. ) Your instructions for a small table was great. THANK YOU! A Canadian browser!! 😊

Rob, at last you have taught me how to baste my very large quilt on a much smaller table. I have been putting off completeing a king size quilt purely because I couldn't work out how to get the backing and batting smooth without wrinkles. Thanks for showing me exactly how to do it.

I've been basting my quilts on a table the same size as yours and I'm DONE! A few weeks ago I bought 2 8 foot long folding tables. They are side by side in the garage for a huge flat surface. Plenty of room to walk all around them and work and I don't have to try moving to my dining room table and protecting it from my safety pins. I'll be heading to Lowes this morning to buy a set of those clamps. They are going to be perfect. Thanks for the idea.

I've watched many many many of your videos and you had your camera angles spot on to watch you sew. Seeing exactly what you are sewing, up close, makes all the difference Rob. Not seeing those partial circles and whatever your pattern was, is not able to be repeated by us cuz we can't see the pattern being sewn. Hope that makes sense? Please do another video with your camera angles like when you video at home. It truly makes all the difference. Stumbled upon your video last night and wanted to say THANK YOU!!! I need a knee replacement and basting on the floor is not an option for me. I have tried pasting with pins and spray basting and I keep getting puckers in my backing when I try to machine quilt on my domestic machine. I have 36 quilt tops completed and need to quilt them all to donate to a foster care agency in Tennessee for boys age 11-17. They're mostly forgotten when people donate quilts. Your video has inspired me to give your method a go and hopefully finish these quilts before fall so these boys can have something that is truly just for them. Thanks again Rob for all you do!❤❤❤❤
Great video, Rob! I do my basting this way and it works a treat! I mark the center (or near the center) of the table with chop sticks crossed over so I can feel it through the layers. Then I match the center of the layer while it's folded in quarters. (Not my idea. Saw this a long time ago on another channel that I sadly can't remember now.) Once you have a common center for all the layers, you can get them lined up before you unfold each layer on top of the previous one and not have to move it a lot. Great for people like me who can't really get down on the floor to baste. Thanks, Rob, for showing this technique.
A much easier no fail way is using 3 pool noodles, takes 20 mins for three layers. Was gamechanger for me. Used to have pain for days after basting quilt on floor. Also had to clean floor and rearrange furniture. Now it’s so easy, found video online. Also FMQ all my quilts at home on small domestic singer. Thanks for video
Love watching and learning from you. It was difficult to actually see what you were doing. I’ve seen other videos of you FMQ and the camera angles were much better. But thanks for all you do for us quilters😊.
The largest office clips work great for attaching quilt backs to most tables and you can more evenly stretch your backing.
I use those exact clamps. Stole them from husband's workshop. A game changer

Thanks for the tips! The alligator clamps are wonderful!! I bought a big variety bag of those at Lowes last year, and it included 4 different sizes. The super small size is perfect for adjusting fabric tension on the quilt frame ends. Plus the larger clamps keep the frame from falling off the table. Its the best quilting gadget Lowes carries! Lol

I love the spring clip idea.... but wouldn't hiring the table with the pins nick up a wooden table? Just to take note of that before someone does this on a nice wooden table. I use plastic folding tables for this reason

Excellent instructions. Just what I need for the space and size table I have available. The steps were illustrated very clearly. I think I will incorporate another tip I read somewhere to help with making sure every layer of the quilt “sandwich” is stacked properly. Here it is: tape a coin, such as a nickel, in the center of the table. This can be done by laying some type of straight edge or string in an “X” from corner to corner both ways. Where they cross is the center of the table. Mark the center of each layer of the quilt sandwich by folding in half lengthways, then crossways and mark the center intersection with a gentle press. Now place each layer down as demonstrated, feeling for the coin on the table. Place the center of each layer over the coin being careful to keep the edges squared up. This will assure adequate backing and batting extend beyond the edges of the quilt top. That will save some fiddling with the layers, especially the batting which can stretch or tear with too much handling.
That is one beautiful quilt! I never feel like my quilt is secure enough using safety pins. Wish I could see designs being quilted. Thank you for offering your quilting wisdom!

Love the information about the clamps and the table. I never could get that stupid blue tape to work for me! Also - LOVE the tips on treating FMQ as exercises. Never thought about it like that. It would have been nice to have a close up to see what you were doing with the circles though. Thanks for the information - off to buy clamps!

My quilting is not great either. But the quilts I love most are not the perfectly longarm- quilted ones, they are the wonky self-quilted ones. Those I've made from first snip to last stitch. I'm now trying to learn free motion quilting.🙉 Good luck !!
Oh dear. Your "small" table is VERY BIG. I went to my insurance office and asked to use their tiled floor to pin the layers together. They were amused, then delighted when I brought the finished quilt for show n tell. ))

This is a great demonstration, but for those with a design wall and are short on table space, basting on the design wall that helps so much letting gravity work on your behalf (so long has you have a pinnable surface as I do with my foamboard insulation).
Very helpful. I hadnt considered the clips at all and my last quilt was just all puckered even tho i smoothed and pinned a lot.
Rob, I quite liked this video as my basting space is similar. I would like to comment that although you talk through your machine quilting, we can’t see the bed of the machine to experience it as well. That would be very helpful. Keep up the great work.

I also use the safety pins method for basting, but I so dislike the holes they leave in my quilt top. Any hints on what to do with the hikes?
