  • Ok, so i'm addicted to autocross racing and I can't bare the thought of not having a car to race. So after blowing up my C5 Z06 Corvettes LS6 engine and not having enough time or money to get it fixed before next season I started looking for a Chevy S10 or C10 pickup. Then by change I found this 1986 mk2 VW GTI !
My wife told me long ago that she would race if I could find an older VW either mk1 or mk2 Rabbit, Golf, or GTI so when this came up for sale I jumped on the chance to get it.
I cant wait to turn this into an autocross car and co-drive with my wife ! MK2 GTI modifications are a new thing for me but i cant wait. I've already started the modifications.
I have a strict budget on this car so the plan is to leave the engine stock but remove as much weight as possible from the car. I mean stripping it of everything I can including floor sound insulation, extra metal brackets, and if i can convince my wife even the sunroof. The car will get Yokohama A052 tire but past that i don't have plans for any upgrades other than maybe coil overs if i can afford them.

Race car breaks, so you buy a new race car while the race original race car is being fixed. I love the logic 😂. Jokes aside, that’s awesome that you and your wife will have a car to race together! Plus you picked up a cool car to have fun with, I have a soft spot for older VW’s.

My wife and I have always wanted a mk2. I've had a few mk3's. We won't keep up with your race car but after the vette is done it will be fun times.

It looks like a fun project depending on the “surprises”. I had a black 87 Golf GT 8V back in the early nineties and still love the old Mk2s. Kristi and I will let you park it next to our Golfs at the events next year. 😀

My wife and I really like the mk2's so finding this was awesome. While removing all the interior I found that mother nature has been hard at work removing weight from the vehicle. The passenger floor has a decent amount of rust damage.

@@oisforoffroad Well that’s a big bummer. Hopefully it won’t be too bad to repair.
