I wish our mother was here to read these comments and experience this emotive rendition of 'Christus Symphony' by a world class orchestra, in the year 2022. It was her dream that the next generation of musicians and music lovers would rediscover and recognize her father's symphony, for the unique gem that it is. Is it a masterpiece? That is for you, to decide. Bruno Walter said this about Grandpa and his output, "The work has deeply moved me, yeah, I can say I was overwhelmed. The musical idiom in which Perpessas expresses himself is very interesting and of convincing power."
Charilaos Perpessas studied with Arnold Schoenberg. 'Christus Symphony' was performed four times in Carnegie Hall by Dimitri Mitropoulos and The NY Philharmonic in 1950 and again in '56 when Eugene Ormandy and The Phila Symphony Orchestra lent "The Philadelphia Sound" for two shows.
Charilaos experienced much trauma during his first 40 years of life. He was not a people person and perhaps prone to fits of egomania. In his defense, he lived through two world wars, never saw his parents again after leaving Germany in '37, lost an arm and the ability to play piano after being shot by British Soldiers in Athens in 1944, and then, six years later, he is being called to the stage in Carnegie Hall by Mitropoulos for a standing ovation after his full-length symphony premieres in New York City. Two more shows were added to satisfy audience demand. Your head could swell like a balloon, too.
Following his fall from grace, legend has it that Spyros Skouras, president of 20th Century Fox from '42-'62, tried unsuccessfully to coax our grandfather from reclusion with offers to write original music for cinema. Charilaos declined, claiming movie scores were "beneath him". Fits of egomania. As it was, Charilaos never worked in music again and his symphonies slipped into obscurity, until now. Perhaps, one day, 'Chirstus Symphony' will find its way, back to Carnegie Hall.
We are so sincerely grateful to Constantinos Carydis and Frankfurt Radio Symphony, as well as Athina Rosenbaum (Charilaos' niece), Yannis Samprovalakis and everyone at Hellenic Music Center, for your great efforts to keep our Grandfather's music alive. Without you, it could have been lost forever. Thank you.
    Charilaos Perpessas' Grandchildren,
    ~phillip & josephine~

Did he ever write an opera? He was as good an orchestrator and musical dramatist as Schreker or Strauss.

This is seriously a piece of music that deserves ALOT more attention than it's currently getting. Hopefully this recording catches on because it's an extremely ear pleasing work and interesting throughout! And the playing and conducting is out of this world! Bravo!

You have great taste! I also hope this recording catches on. We've been waiting a long time for a new rendition and to have it in high def with crystal clear sound is a dream come true. I am so grateful for Constantinos Carydis and Frankfurt Radio Symphony. These musicians are amazing. Pure joy and emotion radiating from them. Thank you!

Another work by another composer, I am not familiar with. I am humbly grateful to hr-Sinfonieorchester and their TH-cam channel.

This just popped up after watching a previous Frankfurt RSO video. What a lovely work this is from a composer I've never heard of before.

From Wikipedia. Harilaos Perpessas (Greek: Χαρίλαος Περπέσσας) (10 May 1907 - 19 October 1995)[1] was a Greek composer of the Postmodern Era.

Tell your mother that the composer's 44 year old grandson wholeheartedly agrees with her. I trust her intuitiveness.
